James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Schmactors) joins us again this week to share gratitude for his tenure as an actor along with his path to self acceptance after realizing how empty the pursuit of external validation can be. James also talks about the misinterpretation that got him kicked out of Juilliard, his darkest day on set while filming Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and his star struck geek out moment with the one and only Leonard Nimoy!

James did an incredible job dubbing Zamasu and he should be credited for it. Dragon Ball Evolution was a disaster, but that wasn’t his fault and he more than made up for it with an incredible vocal performance in Dragon Ball Super.

When I first heard about the making of Dragon Ball Evolution I was so exited to see it and then I had to wait for 5 years to see it and then it didnt even get it the cinemas near me and I waited a couple of years until I found it on dvd and then I bought it.
And it was heartbreaking seeing how much of a mockery it was.
But all the blame is on the creators and not the actors.

Dragonball Evolution is the prefect example of what Asomongold said about writers nowadays. They take your idea and think they can write it better than you. They use your IP as a medium to write their own shit.

It's hard to overstate how bad Dragon Ball Evolution really was (none of which is on James, he did his best with what he was given).
The movie was received so poorly that the original author, the late Akira Toriyama, wrote his own movie and revived the series as a whole after having ended it almost 20 years prior

Anime is often really tough to translate well to film. It's a high-concept unrealistic genre with extremely stylized visuals and really dramatized emotions. It's tough to approach that and adapt it in a way that fits the realism of live-action productions that doesn't seem absurd.

    • @thenightstar8312

No, tjhey just made all the wrong creative chocies. That movie had every chance in the world of being good if they had cared even slightly to make it true to the manga and anime. But they didn't even try to do that. They intentionally made it unrecognizable to the source material.

I've had it in my head for years how to do a Dragon Ball Movie. You start with Goku vs Piccolo Jr in the tournament, a 5-10 minute fight to open the movie with a bang and establish that they're enemies. Goku wins of course and celebrates, announcing his intention to get married...as the celebrations continue we pull back through a screen and realise we're watching a broadcast of the tournament...pulling back even further we see that we're inside an alien space pod and the person watching the broadcast is none other than Raditz. He says something like "there you are, little brother..." and we watch the pod flying through space, heading towards Earth...opening titles...Rock The Dragon plays (Cha La Head Cha La would be the closing credits).

That's fascinating because honestly, I figured the pseudonym was really just because it was a union thing or something along those lines. To know he did it because he just wanted the fans at cons to be the ones that knew and that it was primarily because he didn't want credit? James, you are an amazingly humble human being.

I'm thankful for DB Evolution, for one, it made Toriyama come back to the series, and thus give Marsters the opportunity to play Zamasu. Secondly I own a copy of the movie for the TFS riff track so it gives me plenty of laughs to this day.
If anything, James doesn't need to apologize, all he did was portray a character that was written by someone who disregarded the original author's consultation, and the acting was fine considering the material given.

Guys, Dragon Ball Evolution was one of the vest things to happen to the series. Toriyama was excited to work on an American movie, but the studio shunned him. He was so irritated when he saw the movie that he put Battle of Gods into production, eventually leading to Super. No Evolution, no BoG or Super.

Funny enough we're doing a Dragon Ball Month in November and DB: Evolution was chosen as one of the topics. It is fascinating that not even the creators or actors of the film support it but it's 100% not the fault of the actors. I rewatched it recently and I'm still baffled that the creators of the film wrote it and said "yeah that seems close enough". So glad that James got a second chance of being in the franchise through Super he seems like he genuinely cares about Dragon Ball!
