We had a family friend come visit us here in Texas from Los Angeles a few years ago and witnessed a group of individuals breaking into his home on his ring doorbell camera a couple days later. Called the police to file a breaking and entering report and the police called him back to inform him that he saw the renters coming home.
That was a 1 1/2 year battle for our friend who had to pay $100,000 to the squatters just so they would leave.
I love California, but that situation is just mind-boggling. Our friend had all of his electronics stolen his clothes stolen his jewelry stolen and everything of value was stolen. They trashed his house costing tens of thousands of dollars in repair and in the one and 1/2 years that it took for them to evict these people, he had to pay rent while still paying a mortgage along with all of the utilities, including Netflix for the squatters.
Why the state lets this happen is beyond me.

A car is private property too. Yet a car which can be valued anywhere from $200 for a beater with a heater to several thousands of dollars is a felony stop resulting in some cases lives lost. But a house worth 100k and up is a civil matter to steal, occupy and destroy. Not sure I grasp the logic here. Let's ignore the fact that in many cases a person has broken into the home. Is in a place they don't have lawful authority to be, trespassing. Gaining a value of use that they would otherwise have had to pay for. And of course the loss of value to the actual owner. Just curious but has a squatter ever done this to a cop, legislator, mayor or any other government official? Would law enforcement response be the same for those individuals?

Allowing successful home invaders to keep what they conquer was a terrible mistake that needs to be undone.

Keep security cameras and alarm systems on property you are not living in. This is crazy! When you purchase a home or property your ownership of that property is filed as a deed with the city/county and is public record. If a squatter takes over your home, the proof of your ownership is public record. A squatter taking over your house and refusing to vacate is essentially stealing it. Shoplifters are arrested, charged, and face consequences for stealing. Why are squatters not arrested, charged, and prosecuted for stealing your home? The police arrest shoplifters. Why can't they evict and arrest squatters?

The trespassers should be removed immediately, should be a criminal matter, and the trespassers put in jail with felony. Why is California not implementing an Anti-Criminal Squatter Bill. Every working voting resident of California needs to write to their Senator and Representatives to prepare a Bill for the Governor to sign just as Florida did in March 2024.
