      @@tytomasoski238 Thanks off the suggestion, I'm watching it now.
      And this guy does not understand what selling-out means, at all. It's got nothing to do with how popular they become. I mean look at Tool, one of the most respected bands in the world, now imagine Tool singing a poppy song about "America" Infront of a giant green flag...
      That's what selling out is.

    I will always love nu metal, and I wish it was still as popular as it used to be. I grew up with Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, SOAD, RATM, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Evanescence, Mudvayne, Sevendust, Static X. I wish there was a new generation of nu metal bands, but I still listen to these bands on a regular basis, especially when I go running, and I still buy new Korn and slipknot and Disturbed albums when they come out. First concerts I went to were summer sanitarium tour in 2003 with Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Metallica and Mudvayne, and Ozzfest 2003 with Korn and Disturbed and I just saw Korn, Evanescence, and RATM this summer and they were still incredible! I listen to many different genres of music, but these bands will always be my favorite to see live and nu metal will always be my favorite subgenre of rock!

    I'm 50 and Nu-metal was something I was concerned with ... at first for about 5 minutes. I think it has more to do about *which* band and *which* songs. Korn was one of the first bands I remember who came on heavy and hard and sang about family dysfunction and isolation. Yes, Grunge did that (and so did some old school rock) but it was kind of like Grungelike lyrics but heavy. As for the music, it was simply different. But to say that they didn't have something meaningful to say - I think the gatekeepers had that wrong. These were angry kids. They *tried* the grunge approach and nobody listened. Conversely bands like LimpBizkit - if you took them at face value - were just fun (core-pop?)

      It was more the early Noughties than the early 90's. The early Nineties apart from grunge had KMFDM, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy and of course Ministry.
      Ministry:s magnum opus - Psalm 69. HOW to Succeed and How to Suck Eggs - in my opinion set the pace for the Indie and Alternative scene.
      Nirvana's albums were way too commercial. Alice in Chains had the better albums. Grunge quickly became a marketing catch phrase and dales gimmick. Ministry and the Industrial sound was the genuine alternative.
      1997 - 98: Rock dies. Grunge has completely worn out. Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots produced some great albums that were mainstream.
      Marilyn Manson rules the rock roost for two short years. The Columbine school massacre was blamed on Marilyn Manson and to a lesser extent NiN.
      Album sales for alternative bands plummeted. The term Nu-Metal began spreading everywhere.
      That Industrial sound carried on and gave birth to Nu-Metal. Nu-Metal was allegedly a cross between hip-hop and hard rock.
      Problem - fans of hard Rock loathe hip hop and vice versa. Some hip hop was acceptable.
      KORN - labelled as Nu-Metal along with Linkin Park and Limp
      Bizkit. In my opinion KORN were not Nu-Metal but someone from the marketing section of their record company tried to cash in. The same applies for Linkin Park who were labelled everything and didn't fit anywhere.

      Also, this guy fails to mention that even Korn ("Falling Away from Me") and Slipknot ("Wait and Bleed" and "Purity") had their moments where they weren't just screeching angry.
      So for the host of this channel to make such a comparison is quite misleading and shows he hasn't really done enough research prior to making this video.

    My 2 cents... What kills every single genre? Happened 80 years ago, still today... 1.- the fact that most of its listeners grow up and stop looking for shelter and explanation of their lives in music.... they grow up, mature and leave those things (including music) behind... we tend to tie emotion with events (music), thats how memory works. As you grow up, new experiences create for new feelings and memories which are more relatable further in life with other styles of music and art... You have no idea how many of my hardcore metal friends became huge Ben Fold Five fans and even crap like Coldplay... its just much more relatable to what they are experiencing now in life. Now this doesn't mean that anyone who still likes NuMetal is immature, hell I LOVE My NuMetal Korn, Orgy and others... but if you think it long enough they will see how al least in some other areas of life, you've moved on... AND reason number 2.- The True Fans.... those guys destroy everything... these conservative, entitled selfish pricks are responsible for the death of so many styles and art forms... Metal Karens who believe they are in position to tell artists what to do, fans on how to be fans and festivals on who to book... The latest evidence of these individuals is the Metallica - Stranger things debate... these are the same idiots who asked HBO to refilm the final season of GOT with an ending they liked... the arrogance.... by a bunch of non contributing zeros. Remember, the symptom of a looser is their ability to always find mistakes in others.

But I do find the music they created in their later albums lacked something. I just couldn't get into them. I still have a lot of music on Spotify from all of those first albums but nothing from their following albums. IMO, these bands are responsible for their own demise.. Genres change, people change, over the years and it's what's trending at the time that's popular. That being said, it's up to the devoted fans like us to keep the music alive. Man, I love my Korn and been a fan since the early 90's, and will be a fan till I'm old and grey. I'm also a huge fan of Fugazi and a whole array of music. Then I listen to it and 90% of the time it's fucking black metal with a frontman who doesn't know how to sing and 4 other guys who bought their instruments the day before in a second-hand shop and came up with the great idea to found a band.
      I feel like bands like theese are everywhere right now and all of them brag about how "true" and innovative they are, while they sound like someone threw a bunch of screws into a blender and started crying by doing so. God how I hate their attitude.

      @robwalsh9843 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @DansWarped With all due respect, I'll break down why people started to hate nu metal(I'll be repeating some of the points Finn made)
      -It was oversaturated and everywhere. It had become the dominant hard rock/metal sound in the late 90's and in that situation inevitably people will turn against it.
      -Musically, it was very rhythm-oriented, especially in regards to guitar playing. A lot of nu metal bands didn't really grow or challenge themselves to move beyond downtuned drop D guitar riffs. People got burned out from that.
      -It was juvenile. That's not necessarily a slight, since punk rock is also very juvenile, but that just means that when the fanbase matures they're in danger of leaving.
      -The "manufactured angst" Finn talked about was right on the money. Plus, the other side of nu metal lyrics from the pain/torture aspect was the macho tough guy posturing.
      Nu metal was fresh and interesting when it began, but in the few years it was around music fans just got tired of it. I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy nu metal, just speaking from my own experience.

    • @awhowell
      @awhowell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kind of agree with this too. It’s hard to really define nu-metal as a genre... it’s like a period of overall heavy music that occurred after grunge. But other metal genres like death metal and black metal were still very much alive during the nu-metal period too.

    • @LouisWinthorpe622
      @LouisWinthorpe622 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That period, like any period, had more things going on in it than a crappy sub genre heavy metal. So: no, it doesn't describe a period. Your feelings have got it arse-backwards.
      You might as well say, "I've always felt like Jackass and the X Games were more descriptions of a period in time, than an actual comedy show and televised extreme sports tournament".
      Or how about, "I've always felt like Nike Air Jordans are more a description of a period than an actual basket ball shoe".
      It was OF it's time period, definitely. Very, very dated because it has not dated well. But it certainly was not 'the period'. It actually was/ is just a kind of music. And what's funny is it is really, really dated and old-hat but it has the word 'new' in it but it's spelt 'Nu' which makes it even worse and even stupider, more of-it's-time, dated, old fashioned and crap.

    To people in the comments trashing Finn because Slipknot and Korn still being super popular:
    1) Only Slipknot's first album was really nu-metal
    2) Korn has changed their sound to be more mainstream (not that that's a bad thing, but it's barely nu-metal now imo)
    3) And if you look at the late-90s and early 2000s, the popularity does not compare. Even if Slipknot and Korn were still nu-metal, they're the only ones. But back then, there were soooo many nu-metal bands with mainstream popularity (Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, etc.). There are very few new nu-metal bands now. That's what he means by "dead." There are no new developments in the genre.

    I've always loved numetal. And still do. Korn was my absolute favorite for a while when I was a kid. That band spoke to me on so many levels growing up. And then Slipknot came out and hoooooly shit. My world was forever changed.

    Honestly, Nu Metal basically “died” when Eminem dissed Fred Durst. He was basically the “face” of the Genre at the time, so once Em did that, LB was no longer cool and by proxy the Nu Metal scene all together. To kids in the suburbs, Eminem was the real deal, while Fred Durst felt like this douchey, wanna-be poser (not to mention Wes Borland leaving the band shortly after). And being labeled a “poser” is like the kiss of death in punk & metal…
