1st Gen 4Runner Power Window Operation

  • This should apply to the mid- late-80s 4Runner, pickup, Hilux and Hilux Surf models with power windows, likely the SR5 models.
    From 1985-1995 Toyota used very similar power window switches but added features to the system. Apparently in the mid-80s, there were some reports of children and pets being injured by power windows being closed inadvertently while they had heads or appendages sticking out of the window.
    The early model rocker switches were easy to operate, up or down. But this meant that they could be actuated by accident. Later model switches require that you hook your finger under the switch to lift it and raise the window. Also, a power window lockout switch was added to disable the passenger power window switches altogether.

    2021 pricing was under US$20 for the new switch.
    More to come, looking into the changes Toyota made over the years...

    Hole crap I had a head ache with my 85, this makes way more sense, I got my passenger side window working only with that switch, my master switch doesn’t operate my passenger

      Yes, it is a rather complicated system in the '85 model. My master switch acts up from time to time. Don't really want to open it up until it completely stops working, though.

    Question...if i hook my motor up directly it works fine..if i do it thru the switch it dont work.. am i assuming correctly that its a bad ground? And if so,how can elimanate the drivers side switch entirwly? The passenger switch has no ground terminal?

    • @The4Crawler
      @The4Crawler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ground comes through the driver side switch, check that common ground connection there and then the 2 normally closed contacts should pass ground to the passenger side. Otherwise, connect the L-B and L-W wires, at the passenger side switch, to ground and that should bypass the driver side switch.

    On the 1st Gen models, I have an '87, I'm not getting contact on pin 1 and 3 (when facing the switch terminal, top left 1, top right 3). Would this cause both windows to not work at all? I can't seem to find a loose wire or anything out of the ordinary on this vs. the other poles. Assuming I understand the test procedures correctly from the FSM? It was working fine then just stopped completely. I have 11.5v on the door side with key on, and the motor works fine when connected straight to 12v. Appreciate any insight!

      I find that if you get the wire colors off those pins on the switch and then use those color codes on the wiring diagram it'll help see what those pins connect to and what their purpose is. The problem is usually related to the switch halves separating when you push the button.

      @@The4Crawler i tried that,no power still.. if i go direct from battery and hook 1 wire to ground and the hot to the other other terminal on the motor ut will go up and down on passenger side...snowin to hard to try drivers side.. oh...mine is a 84 4 runner...any other common places ti look without entirely running new wires?

    • @The4Crawler
      @The4Crawler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@preacher031163 If the motor runs with direct power, then it's likely a bad connection in one of the switches. Common for the switches to fail:
      www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/index.shtml#WindowSwitch
      Problem is pushing on the switch pushes the back side of the switch away with the spring pressure and you don't get good contact.

      @@The4Crawler so,dug this 84 out of a field,its a wiring nightmare...you were extremely helpful under normal conditions,i sure wish some folks never had wire cutters,lol...now on the druvers side switch i havent found any aftermarket,i guess u just have to wire in 2 right hand switches?

    • @The4Crawler

      @@preacher031163 Yes, either a pair of single switches or maybe try www.car-part.com/ and see if you can find a used one in a junkyard. It might also be easier to eliminate the driver's side control over the passenger side and just wire the passenger switch to power and ground directly.
