I remember watching this when I was a kid. The only part I remembered in detail was him saying there wasn't a lot of oxygen at the top. I would have been 8 at the time. Ernest was huge and the hype for Splash Mountain was huge. This special made the ride look really scary, much more so than it actually is. Back in the days before the internet a special like this was a treat because there really was no other way for me to look up the details of what a new ride at Disneyland was like.
I don't ever remember this but this is cool anyways.....I remember they had a video or two similar to this concerning Barbies birthday and a dance video thing.
I saw the ending for this special as a kid and it never re-aired. Thank you for uploading this for us Ernest fans. We need a new Erenest P Worrell in today's world.
"Thats as tight as Italian hemp has been since the senseless and brutal hanging of Cole Younger's horse. " Ill never forget that line in a million years. lol the writers for earnest where on a whole nother level.
I'm from UK... but I defo remember seeing this on TV whilst over on holiday in Florida... might've been a rerun before the soft opening of the WDW version of Splash Mountain in 1992. 👍
Damn I miss the 80s!!!! We had the best times. Today crap sucks. Please take me back!!! Lol I would give anything (besides my kids) to be able to relive it all. I didn't really think to appreciate it then, but now I truly miss it within my soul and all the memories.
At 10:24, you can hear Bruce Gordon say "They're some of the favorites" after mentioning that the adorable characters from the movie, Song of the South are what leads this attraction. Even though Disney hasn't released Song of the South in the USA since its 1986 theatrical release, Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear are still to this day some of the favorites and why Disney is making a big mistake erasing them and removing Splash Mountain.
I just went on this for the first time last month. I remember watching this when it first aired. I'd wanted to go on it since. It's real interesting to watch this now. I literally cringed when he casually had his feet up, and the fact there was no bar or whatever that came down. And now ernest has his own ride. Kind of cool.
Disney was proud of Song of the South in the 1980s. The movie was released twice in that decade, in 1980 and 1986 - just three years before the ride opened. My guess is that Disney hadn't planned on withholding the movie at the time they made the attraction.
@@davidwallgren7575why I don’t understand is why couldn’t just make an all new ride for tiana? If they wanted to retheme splash mountain They could’ve just made it tangled 🙄
Man, I was about to be mad as hell at that impatient interviewer clown at 10:00 before my stupid ass realised that she was meant to be doing that as the gag..
It's hard to understate just how gigantic Jim was in the 80's to 90's. He was a cultural touchstone.

I was 10. I remember the oxygen mask gag.
I watched it as a kid too, I was 12. I remembered the “wish I’d brought a book” line. So awesome to watch this.
I don't ever remember this but this is cool anyways.....I remember they had a video or two similar to this concerning Barbies birthday and a dance video thing.
I remember the part where he is going through at the beginning and saying, "Look at all the critters!" I would have been 8.
There needs to to be a statue of Ernest in front of splash mountain to honor him!!!!
Splash Mountain is no more!
Now it's Tiana's Bayou Adventure.
@@mateomeza1278 Very sad, isn't it?
They’d just tear it down anyway
Very 80s

Jim Varney was one of a kind💛
R.I.P.
Jim Varney

The first guy to ride splash mountain I remember riding splash mountain with his best buddy the camera man.
I saw the ending for this special as a kid and it never re-aired. Thank you for uploading this for us Ernest fans. We need a new Erenest P Worrell in today's world.
He mispronounced Jim Varneys title
I was 7 when this aired in 89 and I went to Disneyland and universal Hollywood first time 30 years ago at 11 and this was my favorite ride since
Jim Varney should've worked with Mike Judge.
It would been beyond epic.
RIP Jim Varney.
Rest In Peace Splash Mountain 😑😭🌊⛰🏞🐻🦊🐰🪵

They don’t make ‘em cheesy like they used to. I wish I grew up watching Pee-Wee and Ernest
Same here
The vengeful ghost of Jim Varney will not abide by the permanent closure of Splash Mountain!

I wish I could go back see this. I missed the special. Had to share the TV between my siblings and step dad back than.
I mean there was a lot of fucked up shit in the 80s too

Sad that both the ride and Jim "Ernest" Varney are no longer with us! RIP "YOU ARE MISSED"!
Oh, thanks so much for uploading! This is wonderful! Varney is the best! Brings back lots of memories of riding Splash Mountain as a kid, too! ❤️❤️❤️
Watching this again because I was robbed of riding it for the last time
On this day Disneyland officially closed Splash Mountain ☹️
If Song of the South ever gets an official blu ray release this should be a bonus feature on it. R.I.P. Jim Varney and Splash Mountain.
Good luck Ernest! And remember. We care.
15:32 - Brer Rabbit acting out what Ernest is saying always stuck with me.
I wish they still did special like this
I miss him so much
Going to miss this ride. Hope Tianna's Bayou Adventure will be good.

This man was one of kind lol

I envy the people who got to meet him in person on that day--also, poor Earnest XD
Farewell Splash Mountain 😭🌊⛰🏞🐻🦊🐰🪵
Rip Splash Mountain 😭🌊⛰🏞🐻🦊🐰🪵
It's good that this went well and he didn't die!
If this were on Disney + I wouldn’t have canceled my subscription
Yeah, it'd be a shame if they kept a fun archive of their older sillier Disney Channel content, instead of making it a Marvel/Star Wars treadmill.
With the new re theme, will the ghost of ernest go again to the bayu?.
That would be interesting
Last Podcast on the LEft brought me here, thank God I never saw this when I was a kid or I would have never went on that ride lol.
Podcast The Ride brought me here!
That reporter didn't let the producer of the ride speak!
Haha. I love that part!
A Howard Cossell moment.
Let's just say this whole special is scripted.
Part of the joke lol
Hahahah😂😂😂
I remember this! Thank you for posting.
Now that Spalsh will be closing it made me remember it's opening and how ibwatched this on tv when I was young.
I haven't seen this video in 31 years, since I was 5!
Ernest goes to splash mountain needs to released on dvd and Dr. Otto and the riddle of the gloom beam.
There's a 10 disc best or Ernest DVD set that includes it, I have it too
21:18-22:01 If you lesson closely in the credits you can clearly hear the background music Cocktail Lounge from SpongeBob,
AWESOME! AWESOME! Ernest is soooo cool!!!!!!!!!!
What do Jim Varney and Splash Mountain have in common?
They were both killed by cancer.
1. Not funny
2. That's so not what happened with the ride

He died in 2001 and was onky the voice of slinky dog in the furst 2 toy stories
