The Buddhist temple you saw is a Tibetan Buddhist Temple. There is a large Tibetan refugee community who takes refuge in India ever since the Communists of China occupied Tibet. There is a Tibetan Government in exile in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh and even the Dalai Lama lives there. Normally the Tibetan Buddhist population lives in the Himalayan states but there is a large Tibetan community in Karnataka. Hindus see Buddhists as one of our own and the writing script that you saw, which looks a lot like the North Indian writing scripts, is the Tibetan writing script.
