I have the exact same thing going on with my 99 plow truck , I have 3-7.3 trucks and this is the first time this has happened to me wow that's a lot of oil disappering Thanks for the video.
After a week of scratching my head testing and just everything.... this video put me on the right path. Checked my oil level Topped it off and she fired up My brand new orings failed. Thank you!
I had the same problem on my ‘95. I paid the ford dealership $90 to diagnose the problem. They suspected injector rings and quoted me. $1700 to replace the rings. I did research and found your video. I paid $80 for oem rings and my sons and I, with no experience, went to work. In the process, we found one burned pin on one plug into the driver’s side valve cover gasket and one burned pin on the under cover plug on the passenger side. We replaced both gaskets and a pigtail. While we we in there and had to pull glow plugs to “bump the motor”, I decided to replace all 8 glow plugs. ($85 oem). In the end, I spent about $200 and 8 hours to save $1500 and learn a lot. We have driven the truck 418 miles since the repair and haven’t lost an ounce of oil!. Incidentally, in doing mine, I found that there was not a single pink o-ring on any injector. It was a set of 2 rings to fill that space and the smaller of them was failed in all 8 injectors. Your video walked us through the whole process and saved me $$$$$$$. Thank you very much for your help
Buddy I liked your video,. My 7.3 power stroke. Has the same systems as yours did,. You saying the oil rings on the injections was causing it to use all that oil and loose power,. Because that's exactly what mine is doing,. All of a sudden it started using a lot of oil,. I've already put a new turbo an glow plugs,. an wiring harness,. I'm thinking you have solved my problem,. Thanks again,. and GodBless,
By far the best explanation and visual aid yet. I'm just a novice however, would it be a good idea to put anti seize on the glow plugs for future extraction? I hope not to step on any toes.
I think this is happening to my truck. Mine smokes a little greyish smoke but not really any blue smoke and not an excessive amount like you think there would be with a loss of 4 gallons. The minimal amount of smoke is really deceptive when you're losing 4 gallons over a 200 mile period.
It's best to push the o rings on to the injectors with a tube of some sort. Stretching them, even with the thin pick, makes installing injectors more prone to cutting nicking the o-ring when installing. Pushing them evenly with a tube (PVC pipe, rolled up flexible plastic, etc) will allow them to stretch only as much as needed until slipping into their groove. Do not stretch the new o-ring it may work just fine if you do but prematurely you may start loosing oil into the fuel/burning oil and find that your middle o-ring (pink) was nicked during install and has finally met its demise 40k miles later.
The exact same thing happened to me. Massive oil lose through exhaust. So changed the turbo. Didn’t help so I’m about to change the o rings on the injectors. Hopefully that is my problem too
Oh, one other question, is it okay to start and test the engine with out the internet cooler pipes on? I’d rather not put them on to test, and then remove to put the covers back on. Very good tip to prevent engine damage due to hydraulic ing.
I had my injectors replaced as maintenance. Now my truck drinks oil. Mechanic went back in and found a bad injector. Still drinks oil. Should I replace turbo or would you say the injectors are the problem?? Great video. Thanks
My 7.3 does the exact same thing. We just filled the oil today 3 gallons after 100 miles truck stalled limped home & watched your video. I went & chk my its bone dry. It doesn't leak oil I welded a new dipstick on the pan Did that O-ring repair fix the massive oil consumption & poor fuel economy? I literally lost ¼ tank of fuel while power loss & limping home less than 1 mile lost ¼ tank of fuel Thought i would add i have 424k miles on my 7.2. Changed my HPOP & injectors @ 415k full exhaust delete, cold air box, 6 gun tuner Uaed to get 400 to a full tank now lucky if i get 200 miles. How doni diagnose which side it is or should i just re ring them all? Also dont buy Amazon glow plugs they work 1x then they're done. Made that mistake already.
Orings fixed the oil consumption issue. Don’t think I had a poor fuel economy issue with this. If anything it should have been better since it was forcing the oil into the fuel tank through the filter. Check your fuel filter, if it’s black, oil is getting past the orings. Good luck!
Just so you all know if you do take your injectors out and the oil drains in, throw a dirty towel over your engine with all the injectors and glow plugs out and crank it 5 to 15 seconds you'll have the oil out.
That's how I do it. With glow plugs out..with a broken injector tip and a flooded engine, makes a nice fountain of diesel against the hood 😆 without towel
I did have continuing turbo issues do to poor rebuild quality which I will post a video about at some point which will cover the update. But at this point I have close to 8000 miles on the truck and the oil hasn't gone down at all. Pretty sure the o-rings were the problem.
@@SakimasRidgeHomestead its normal on the fords to get some oil in the Turbo pipes becasuse of the CCV.. esp if you over-fill the oil at all.. the internationals ran draft tubes and didnt have the issue.. you just blew oil on the ground..
Honest question - why not replace your injector cups while you are in there? Cups are cheap but having to tear back into the vlv cover to replace them later is expensive (in terms of down time). Thank you for making this video. The previous owner of my 7.3 said he too experienced MASSIVE oil consumption but could never find out its final destination as there were no external leaks. He re-ringed his injectors, probably with offshore parts like most people are apt to do. Thus, I plan on replacing my injectors outright, doing a fuel bowl delete, installing fuel rail return fittings in the head (to make priming the new injectors easier) as well as replacing the stock 80mm turbo with an 88mm turbo. I will be doing other things too, but I just wanted to ask the question regarding the cups.
Love your videos friend. When you removed the brass plugs to let the oil drain prior to removing the injectors, how long did you let the oil drain? Did you notice any issues? The oil draining into the cylinder has me worried I will hydro lock my motor. Should letting all the oil drain prior to removing injectors make sure that doesn't happen? Thanks again.

Yes, the massive oil loss issue is gone. I still use some oil, but from what I've heard, that is normal for diesels. Thanks for watching, and good luck with your repairs.
Excellent and extremely informative video!! Thank you for posting!!! I only have one real question. I was just wondering if you knew how many miles were on the Truck when the previous owner changed injectors?
Question? I have the same problem right now and i am about to tackle it tomorrow by myself. With no experience at all. Only watching your video will help me. But since there is oil in the fuel bowl, I know there will be oil in the tank. How in the blue hell do I get the oil out? will it burn off or do I have to drop the tank or do a fuel system clean? And how do you do a fuel system clean?
Any reason you took the belt off? Did you torque down both bolts on the injector or just the one? Is it normal for there to be oil in the inter cooler return pipe? Not much in mine, but a bit drained out once it sat after taking it off. If it is normal where does it come from and how to check that it is not excessive, or that a seal is going? Other than hard start in cold weather mine is fine, but a bit of oil in the engine valley that keeps leaking down the back of the engine. I am in the process of replacing glow plugs, and after watching your video again, I am going to do the o rings since I have them. Replacing valve cover gaskets and wiring as well. I am hoping that will solve the hard, no start in cold weather when not plugged in. Anything below 40F or 8C and it is problematic. My truck is going through oil like crazy. May I ask was your truck smoking? My truck isn't smoking. If it's getting into the fuel system wouldn't the truck smoke like crazy?
I would notice a little bit of smoke once i a while, but not like you'd think. Most of the oil pushes back the fuel line through the filter and into the tank. That's what causes the fuel filter to be black. Once it mixes with the fuel, it doesn't smoke much when it burns.
First check or change camshaft sensor (cheap and easy ) 2nd check ipr valve 3rd check icp (you can actually disconnect the icp and it will default the computer to 750 psi ) 4rd make sure you high pressure pump it’s working
A little oil in the tubes is normal. The excessive oil I had was coming from the turbo. Bad o-rings will push the oil into the fuel system and cause the oil filter to be black. I was “lucky” enough to have both issues. Thanks for watching.
Changed my oil 1200 miles ago and today found out I was 3 gallons low. Check it about a week ago it was full. Sound like o ring problems? Is it safe to drive as long as i keep an eye on the level till I can get new o rings put on? Oh yeah great video new sub
Keep a close eye on the oil level. Mine quit running at about three gallons low. I did an oil change and in less than 1500 miles it was down the three gallons. I was then adding about a gallon every 200 miles, which for me is two days.
@@SakimasRidgeHomestead Did you ever find out where the oil was going. You mentioned that the truck was running poorly at times. It is a good possibility. I was loosing about a gallon every 100 miles. It could always be something more severe, but the o-rings is a good starting point. You should be able to see the bad o-ring when you take the injectors out.
Yes, the starting issue/ oil loss was resolved with the o-rings. I wouldn't necessarily say air in the oil passages. Once the engine oil gets too low, the oil pump will not keep the HPOP reservoir full and the HPOP cannot generate pressure to operate the injectors.

Hello guys , i have 2003 7.3l powerstroke , i have changed head gaskets o rings and everything ,after that the truck Excessive oil of 3 gallons with just a almost 100 miles with white gray smoke nun stop , please guys I don't know what i do with this problem can any one help , thanks
I have no oil pressure and long crank 1st thing in mor I g after that most the day it fires up but I'm but I g oil and I just replaced the turbo HELPPPPPP
IM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY 2000 f350 OIL IS DRAINING INTO MY DEASEL TANK AND LEAKING OUT MY OIL IS GONE FROM THE MOTOR SO JUST REPLACE INJECTOR RINGS AND THAT WILL DO IT
ALL THE OIL SEEMS TO BE GOING INTO MY ACTUAL DEASEL TANK AND HAVE NO OIL IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTS IN MY MOTOR IF ITS ON IS THAT INJECTOR RING PROBLEMS OR COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE
It is a good possibility. I was loosing about a gallon every 100 miles. It could always be something more severe, but the o-rings is a good starting point. You should be able to see the bad o-ring when you take the injectors out.
Cracked injector can cause the issue as well.
Did your startup issue resolve? Air i
n the oil passageways? Don't forget to check the HPOP res. people!
Yes, the starting issue/ oil loss was resolved with the o-rings. I wouldn't necessarily say air in the oil passages. Once the engine oil gets too low, the oil pump will not keep the HPOP reservoir full and the HPOP cannot generate pressure to operate the injectors.
Hey high torque starter 100$ delivered
Y would u not just buy new injectors cause they go bad and worn out after 200k any way not knocking what ya did I just go safer route 100 mile round trip is so small trip
Waiting for you to get to the point is frustrating when we're here looking for answers to why our truck is not operating properly. Just sayin
That's why you have a scroll button , just saying
hey I have a 7.3 Blows smoke and some oil out of exauhst put new used Injectors, turbo and pedastol in it still does same thing its 2002 135,000 miles what could be the problem
