    I think about my father-in-law and me playing MS Flight Sim on his Commodore 64. Typically we would set Chicago Meigs Field as a starting point. It was a real challenge to control a Piper Cub with the joystick due to the lag period after stick movement. Then you'd overreact with the stick and invariably crash onto a building in Chicago. LOL
    Side Note: when in the Chicago Union Station, there was a display showing an aerial view of Chicago and Meigs Field. The caption stated that there were over 5 million plane crashes at Meigs Field. I laughed and knew it was talking about the MSFS and the Commodore 64! Fun times in the 80s! Cheers, Bob

    Very cool setup. Thanks for the video. You've given me some ideas for the future. One piece of kit I would recommend is the Tobii Eye/head tracker. The bar would set right on top of your MCP and you would no longer have issues with covering the camera like you do with the Track IR. I love mine because you don't need to wear anything anymore for head tracking.

    While full 737 cockpit builds are great, I've always wondered about those who also like to fly GA or other aircraft. This setup is still somewhat 737-centric in many ways, but adaptable enough for other aircraft. Seems like a good balance.

    • @skyhigh776
      @skyhigh776  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Sure, you're absolutely correct. The PMDG 737-800 is my 'go to' aircraft, and as much as I would really like a dedicated 737 cockpit, I would not be prepared to sacrifice being able to fly some of my fave GA airraft like the C152, PA28 and Comanche. So flying in a virtual cockpit gives me that flexibility.

    Hi Rocky excellent set up thank you, I have chatted before to you re the overhead which I am very intresterd in purchasing , with VR Insight being in South Korea and there website is not great did you have any issues with your order and delivery ? also how much was import tax and when is this charge applied also how long did yo uhave to wait to receive it Many Thanks Paul

    • @skyhigh776
      @skyhigh776  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Paul, yes, I remember. Sure, I understand your concerns, and they are very real, that's why I didn't buy the panel for quite a few years. It was originally about £2000+ taxes and delivery to the UK, so for me, that was never going to happen. Then a couple of years the price virtually halved! But I was still unsure because of the lack of support locally in the UK and like you say, the rather less than intelligible website. Having said that, the biggest concern for me, was some of the posts I read from other guys who couldn't get it to work, but then it seems someone had created a profile and uploaded it to SPAD. Using this profile I have had zero issues with it. But hey, sometimes you've just got to go with your gut instincts, and I wanted an overhead panel, so pulled the trigger on it. I've had it for a couple of months now and have had zero issues. The price including taxes and delivery was about £1200 inclusive. If I remember, I think the unit came out at about £850, then I had to pay £150 for delivery and £200 for taxes, I'm guessing this was VAT, as it amounted to 20%. This has to be paid to the courier company before they release it. I had to wait just short of three weeks from the time I made the order, through to it arriving on my doorstep.

    • @paullee3885
      @paullee3885 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Rocky I will no doubt be in touch once I have finaly pulled the trigger and ordered it , how was their communication?

    Amazing setup! Do you ever run into issues after MSFS updates? How much Time and money did you actually spend building it?

    • @skyhigh776
      @skyhigh776  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hiya. I have to say, I think I've been fairly lucky with not having issues after updates. One of the things I always do is to empty the community folder before any sim update. This is fairly good, well accepted protocol. As for the build, it has grown over the years. I started simming 14 years ago. The cuurent build has been a redesign and so probably took me longer than if I had built it from scratch. It took me just over three weeks. As for costs, here's a breakdown taken from a recent post I made:
      FulcrumSim yoke about £480, MFG rudder pedals approx £300 and VirtualFly throttle quadrant £650, CPflight MCP (Mode Control Panel) and EFIS £800 VRInsight Overhead 737 panel £1200 (incl taxes), Stream deck £150. PropWash Sim radio set £350, Cockpit Master CDU (Control Display Unit) £650, LG Ultragear 48" 4k monitor £1200, Computer AMD 7800x3d processor, 32Gb RAM, 1000w power supply, RTX 3090 GPU £3000(PC total). So this is what I have, then of course the actual cockpit that I have built mainly from 18mm MDF, probably about £250 for all the bits. Cheers.

  • @micksum5394
    @micksum5394 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hello, can i ask what meterial have you used to cover the top above the MCP & EFIS panels. Also did you use MDF or plywood for the front MIP. It would be very much appreciated thanks..

    • @skyhigh776
      @skyhigh776  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, sure. The material I used to cover some of the areas is just a simulated leatherette material. The wood used throughout the build is both 18mm and 12mm MDF. 12mm for the MIP and 18mm for the main structure.

    Go out into real life and don't invest so much in the simulated one. A model aircraft with a long-range FPV system is much more pleasurable and rewarding. The smell of fuel (No boring and unchallenging electric models), the adjustments to the engine and system configurations, the assembly or design and construction of the model, the flight in direct contact with nature and the model being piloted by its hands (No many aids that make us less skilled and just observers), etc. Now that is the magic of flight.

    Brilliant compact build, I was gong to build a complete B737 cockpit with another aircraft engineer friend in his 'man cave' but his wife 'vetoed' it so that was that. Claiming she would see him even less with his own flight deck!
    Cant you not fix your 'Track IR' camera on the hinged board using a flexible umbilical and copex? This would enable it.

    • @skyhigh776
      @skyhigh776  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The sim is built purposely around a virtual cockpit, and it's possible for me to fly the PMDG 738 completely with the instrumentation I have without the need for using the mouse. The fact that it doesn't look like one specific plane is the price you have to pay for flying different aircraft inside a virtual cockpit. I have battled for years about building a 738 cockpit, but always decided against it, as I also enjoy flying GA. BTW, believe me, the immersion inside a virtual cockpit when you're sat just over 2ft away from a 48" 4k screen is breathtaking!

      Hi, I havw=e several saircraft specific profiles which allow me to interract with instruments without using the mouse. I also have customised keys for things such as, running sound files, opening GSX, opening Flow, moving to and from fullscreen, pausing the sim, etc etc.

    Awesome setup and explanation of components!
    There's an error in this video's description though (as of December 1st, 2023). The Asus Z170-A MB is currently listed even though you're using a Ryzen AM5 based CPU (the Z170-A is an Intel Skylake/Kabylake based motherboard). Just thought I'd point that out in case someone wants to assemble the same components as your setup. Other than that, excellent specifications as well!

    Great setup. I swapped my TrackIR for the Tobii head tracker. You don't need a head set for the Tobii and the overhead wouldn't get in the way of it. It's also currently got a 20% off discount. It's a great bit of kit. Much better tahn the TrackIR.

    I like a cockpit to be authentic, this one isn't.

    • @skyhigh776
      @skyhigh776  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's impossible to have an 'authentic' cockpit as you call it, if you're flying mulitple aircraft types. It will always be a compromise.
