The Dhun series is divided into two parts.
The second part of Greening the land with native trees can be found here.
Part 1 of Dhun: • This man changed the f...
    Story of Dhun:
This dry and dusty piece of 500-acres of land on the outskirts of Jaipur
once hardly had 30 trees on it. But today, the same land has over 120 species of birds, 70 species of native trees and thousands of animals.
In the first part of the series, we showed how Manavendra and his team brought water using traditional wisdom which completely transformed the fate of the land.
(Do check the link above if you haven't watched the first part.)
After bringing water into the land, the team ventured into the next adventure. reviving the ecology of the place. creating a forest using indigenous trees, bringing grassland back to the ecology and finally take steps to redefine living spaces.
For creating a sustainable ecosystem, having an intelligent design was crucial. The team along with experts created an ecological masterplan in which they surveyed and, understood the topography and soil type and identified 108 species of native trees, grasses and shrubs to plant in these spaces.
After nurturing the saplings in their own nursery, the team planted them in the land now filled with enough water for them to grow.
They also used techniques like community grazing to increase the fertility of the soil.
And their hard work and vision has come to fruition with Dhun now home to around 70 species of native trees and has a grassland of its own.
The transformation has also transcended the boundaries of Dhun to nearby villages.
Today, Manavendra is chasing another dream. something more ambitious. He dreams of making a sustainable settlement in these spaces. one that is away from the cities. One which is close to nature.
You can follow Dhun's work here.

This is so good to see. My Geography teacher 15 years ago (an old man even back then) tought us that this kind of thing is almost impossible. It always struck me as nonsensical because if there is enough precipitation and the ground is not horribly contaminated with toxic things like mine tailings and smelter slag it HAS to be possible to restore the ecosystem. Glad to see this (and similar things happening on other continents like that old guy in texas..)

I’m inspired to pursue a Miyawaki Food forest 🌳 Giving educational tours of the forest, inviting locals to work and to sell baskets full of local, organic seasonal native and exotic fruit/nuts (pick your own to keep prices low).

A tree prayer by the 16th century Indian Sanskrit poet Jagannatha Pandita:
    धत्ते भरं कुसुम-पत्र-फलावलीनां
    घर्म-व्यथां वहति शीत-भवां रुजां च /
    यो देहमर्पयति चान्य सुखस्य हेतोः

tasmai vadānya guravē taravē namastē //
I bow my head in reverence to you, O, Tree, whom I adore as my Supreme Teacher who for the benefit of others bears the weight of flowers and leaves and fruits, who bears the torture of the summer heat and the illnesses caused by Winter, and who sacrifices Your own self for the benefit of others!

I once flew over India (from dubai to jakarta) and when i looked down it was mostly a barren waste land below with lots of poor villages and towns.. all deforrested and grazed barren to the soil, and set up for monoculture agriculture. Back then i despaired that this sort of solutions would never be tried. I am So, So, glad this initiative worked out so well, and that by returning to the old systems of water capture and management the land has become habitable and biodiverse again. I understood that these old structures are actually still around in many parts of india, though often in serious dis-repair. Would it not be a good idea to restore those to their former(working) situations? It would save tons of work instead of creating entire new ones first. And these old repaired ones might actually make it easier to create new ones adjacent to them, so they can spread out easily.
