How a farmer turned 90 acres of wasteland into a lush green forest in Odisha

    In 1988, Sabarmatee and her father Radhamohan bought an acre of degraded land in Nayagarh district of Odisha. They wanted to set up an experiment to see if a forest using organic techniques. Organic farming was not widespread in India at that time, therefore they had to rely on trial and error. But over time their efforts succeeded and after nearly three decades their one acre has grown to 90 acres and with a lush forest cover. In 1989 the duo registered a NGO called Sambhav, which would work on organic farming and ecological conservation.
    Within their forest is also a 2.5 acre plot which is used for seed preservation. Over the year they have managed to collect, grow and preserve nearly 800 varieties of traditional seeds. More than half of these seeds are of paddy that can grow under different climatic systems and under different stress levels. Some of their seed can tolerate water logging and heavy rain while the other varieties can tolerate drought. There are also certain varieties that are highly nutritious.
    Sabarmatee's efforts have built up an important repository of seeds that can help alleviate the effects of climate change. When Odisha was hit by cyclonic storms in 2013 and 2014, 34 varieties of rice managed to withstand the damage.

      Arun Shankar : You speak the truth ! True patriotism, or ideal patriotism, can be expressed as Humanism. That is when we have meaningful dialogue with all around us; we respect + treasure people. Also, as with Sabarmatee's extraordinary example, treasure + nurture the land and along with that, the community. This represents the Three Realms in Buddhism : the Realm of the Self, the Realm of the Community, or Society, and the Realm of the Land. Why ? Because they are all inextricable linked; no life is separate from others or any of these realms/'areas'. What matters is that our life state is high and our actions contribute to creating maximum value for all humanity.

      Friend I am an Indian & I have seen many comments here from Pakistani viewers. I welcome your view that India and Pakistan should work together in this regard, but how? The politicians and military of your country are saving their existence by spreading hostile dialogues and actions against India where India never has any intention of hostility for you Pakistani people. Instead we have more sympathy for you that your Government should work against poverty and spread education in the community. The peace initiatives of our leaders like Vajpai & Mody etc. was answered through Kargil, Uri, & is now continuing through proxy war and terrorism. You are our brothers detached from us in a mishap in 1947. After about 70 years while India is prospering why your country is begging financial help from international agencies. I think you should realize it and work accordingly united with your country people. Many many thanks from India.

    There's no such thing as waste land. More like disrespected and then neglected by foolish humans

    • @jakobraahauge7299
      @jakobraahauge7299 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Waste land can also merely refer to uncultivated land - which (perhaps not so much densely populated India) both man and nature need more of 💚 but it can also refer to a barren place. In this (lack of) respect vast stretches of "cultivated" land, like parking lots and cityscapes are in fact waste lands. Sadly, as you point to and agree with, modern society has a disastrous lack of respect for nature.
      But very barren places have potential - not only to feed people but also let nature thrive - by sustainable cultivation and the creation of viable and self-reliant permacultures. We, as both individuals, societies and as a species, simply don't seem to understand that we rely on our own respect for nature to sustain ourselves - and in my book, this woman is not only a hero, but also a beacon of hope and reason! 💚💚💚

    "The most important thing in the context of climate change is that the indigenous varieties have experienced various climatic conditions and various climatic challenges over the years [...] still so many varieties are still here."
    This is so important for everyone all over the world to understand. The importance of indigenous crops is so incredibly significant in order to mitigate the advances of climate change and global warming. Indigenous seeds have such resilience because they belong in that land, unlike imported seeds, invasive grasses, trees, and other plants that do not benefit the natural biodiversity of the area.
