Seems like many of them are starving, when support can´t come through. Probably, why they went for Chernobyl, they had heard about the snacks. Also diving equipment complete with fish bowl and bicycle pump will be a valuable upgrade for the Red seals. Surprised many when they came with old Red army stuff, like the tanks dates back to The great patriotic war.

Hi guys, as a physicist (and open water diver :) I just want to give an estimate of the radiation dose these guys were accumulating. As others pointed out, they apparently were in block No. 5, which does not contain any major radioactive waste. The only concern would be fallout from the initial meltdown in 1986. The radiation has died down considerably since then, and this is indoors, which means it was most likely protected a bit from the fallout. I didn't get a clear reading of their last dosimeter, but at 8:10 they show the dosimeter. I cannot discern the unit, but they say, it's 1 millisievert (mSv = 1000 µSv). This would be a dose, not a rate. I'm assuming they mean 1 mSv/h. When they put it on the ground, it shows 1.30, meaning 1.30 mSv/h. This is still a lot, but not that dangerous, as long as they didn't ingest the dust and wash themselves properly after that (plus dispose of their clothes and possibly their hair, like Sus after his swim). Unfortunately not even I as a physicist can make anything of 'ninehundredandfourtyeighthundredandeighty' at his suit (7:50). This is not even a number, lol. The rust on his suit would not be radioactive, as it originates from the hardware in the building and Oxygen from the air, which are both not radioactive. The radioactive particles are in the dust on the ground, as the dosimeter shows.
Assuming, they were in the compound for around 2 hours, this would accumulate to a maximum dose of around 2.6 mSv at the floor. The average dose for the whole body would be less than that. They did a medical checkup after their first 'adventure' with Sus and all were fine, even Sus. This may have encouraged them to venture there again.
To put things into perspective, the average annual dose of a member of the public is about 4 mSv. One chest CT scan alone is already around 7 mSv over a much shorter duration. The lowest one year dose to show any increased cancer risk is 100 mSv and first symptoms of proper radiation poisoning appear at 400 mSv (if received over a short time). They are still a long way from critical exposure. I'm assuming, they did at least some basic 'research' before going into this. This still is crazy(!!!) and unnecessary, but not immediately dangerous (apart from the whole uncertified ice-cave-night diving...).
Radiation levels spiked when the Russians were frolicking through the area and kicked up radioactive dust, but not to a concerning amount.
I still hope, these guys are alright. At the moment, radiation from Chernobyl is probably one of Ukraine's smaller problems.
There is a good radiation dose chart in Wikipedia:Sievert to get a perspective on how much radioactivity is involved in diverse settings.
    Stay safe, everyone!
@DIVE TALK thanks for the professional, fun and sometimes serious videos! You make a good team.

I was just coming to comment this. People think the whole compound is a radioactive wasteland but, other than the inner layers of the sarcophagus and the building in Pripyat where they piled up the fire fighter's clothes, there's not really any spots of "kill you dead right now" radiation left

As a physicist, can you comment on the potential of asbestos contamination inside the building? I know it isn't the same as knowing about radiation contamination but I was curious if you know how asbestos reacts to different molecules in the area. I know asbestos can contaminate water above and below the soil. The rain leaking through the roof and air ducts has me concerned that asbestos is all around this building.

The carribeaner coming unhooked wasn't even close to the most dangerous thing. The Diver could have easily become entangled in the rope. I think he had a knife, but he also hadn't dove in 7 years, and may not remembered where he put it. When I haven't done for 5 months, I usually take it very easy my first dive.
To be blunt, retrieving items while diving is often a pain. The mask severely restricts your peripheral vision, there's the water/air optical distortion, silt/darkness, and you're in a very different environment. IMO, it's best for divers to retrieve, clip, unclip, etc items by feel, and not by looking if at all possible. It's also very easy to become disoriented while diving for the same reasons, which is why cave/wreck diving is it's own specialty.
He also didn't have a backup flashlight, and I don't know if he even had a real dive-light either. It looks like he only went a few feet, so not that far.
Then there's a bunch of rusty, sharp entanglement hazards everywhere, that might be radioactive...

For those who don't know, these guys aren't actually diving in/under reactor 4 (the one that exploded) or even in the same buliding complex. The building where they are filming was a separate reactor hall, constructed for planned reactors 5 and 6, but it was never completed and was left to rot after the incident. So while still dangerous and idiotic, they aren't diving into areas with melted fuel rods/corium and super high levels of ambient radioactivity. The biggest risk for them is small radioactive particulate in the dirt/sediment they kick up while diving, which could potentially be ingested or inhaled

I agree. The reactor halls are actually still lit up and has had a new steel megastructure shielding the sarcophagus since 2016. That area would be lit up as well not as dark as it is. I'm sure there may be some penetrating radiation above background but not enough to endanger life. I'd be more concerned about what you said, ingestion or inhalation of reactor elements. Especially alpha contamination of any element.

Just to repeat what I posted under the 2nd part (though I know I'm a bit late here): Apparently the unit 5 where they are is an unfinished reactor in a building about a kilometer (0.6 mi) to the S-E from the main building where the original four are, which is much better secured. In fact this is the reactor that's the _furthest_ from the unit 4 that melted down.
Which means that if there is a tunnel connecting those two buildings, it is very long (~1 km) and on the other side there is still the whole main building (itself over 600 m long) to get through. Fortunately it also means that the radioactivity here probably isn't nearly as high as it would be in the main building, let alone near the fourth reactor.
Btw. the radioactivity around the power plant isn't all that high, mostly just two or three times higher than natural background rate, it's just some specific areas where it's significantly higher (like the Red Forest) and only some specific parts of the fourth reactor building where you can actually get acute radiation sickness. These guys are probably "just" getting a highly increased chance of getting cancer in the following years.

Gus and Woody, the reason those guys said they have to be quiet is because military guards patrol the Chernobyl exclusion zone to keep out people like them from playing in areas of nuclear contamination. These guys quite often have to elude patrols both near the reactor and at the border of the exclusion zone. Different members of their squad have been caught a few times in the zone. For the most part, they have received warnings and fines and removed from the zone. As far as I can tell, none has yet gone to jail over trespassing there.

Haha guys don't worry Reactor 5(the one in the video) was never fuelled. Not saying there isn't a chance of radiation from the fallout that occurred from reactor 4 -35 years ago, but reactor 5 in itself is pretty safe. The radiation levels outside of the New safe confinement(The arch dome that covers unit4) is nearly normal background levels, with the exception of a few hotspots.

    • @MrManic52001

Dosimeter readings didn't seem like they were at background levels.
That building is also pretty on the top and with passages that seem to have been mostly undisturbed. That's dangerous - and one of the reasons they broke all windows in Pripyat, to get some air circulation. The flooded levels in particular are sketchy. It seems like the perfect funnel to collect and concentrate irradiated garbage.
Yes, probably not as bad as licking the elephant's foot but they should have a dosimeter at all times.

      @Khenfu_Cake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Outworlder Radiation actually tends to be a lot less harmful, even in areas with higher than normal background levels, than most people tend to believe. There are regions in the world with naturally higher than normal background radiation levels and yet people have lived there for thousands of years without any major issues.
What matters more is the type of radiation, how they are potentially exposed and for how long. And even then there might even be individual tolerance in effect. Basically it's not that simple; it's not just a meter you fill up and then you are doomed.
So in short; while it was risky, what they did, it's difficult to really determine the exact danger they actually were in. I personally wouldn't do anything like this but I reckon they were fairly safe as long as they didn't spent too much time in any potential hot spots.

    • @Outworlder
      @Outworlder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@Khenfu_Cake "as they didn't spent too much time in any potential hot spots." We don't know if they hit any as they were not measuring most of the time.
I do agree that most people overstate the risks, but that area is another can of worms :)
While you could potentially live in the Chernobyl area without any ill effects, there are indeed hot spots. We are not talking about slightly elevated background radiation here, we are talking about pockets of high levels, far exceeding yearly recommended limits. One of the mechanisms this can happen is rainwater (washing and concentrating material in a single area). Another I have already alluded to. They were in a building with really poor air circulation with water pooled at the bottom. Not good, even if it wasn't the one where the reactor meltdown. Even more so if it turned out that there was a flooded passage between them (like they were trying to find).
Also how the exposure happens is important too. Depending on intensity and type of radiation, it might not even go through the skin. But take the same level and ingest it, and you can be dead (which could be the case, for example, when the guy was under water, and accidentally swallowed some).
      Some nice reading: www.chernobylgallery.com/chernobyl-disaster/radiation-levels/

For clarification regarding the Decimeter reading at 8:05 in the video.
Large doses of radiation or acute radiation exposure destroys the central nervous system, red and white blood cells, which compromises the immune system, leaving the a person unable to fight off infections.
For example, a single one sievert 1.0 (1,000 mSv) dose causes radiation sickness such as nausea, vomiting, hemorrhaging, but not death. A single dose of 5 (5.0) sieverts would kill about half of those exposed to it within a month.
    * Exposure to 350 mSv was the criterion for relocating people after the Chernobyl accident, according to the World Nuclear Association.

A dosimeter typically reads in uSv/hr (micro) not mSv/hr (milli). mSv dosimeters aren't really a thing since you can just convert from uSv to mSv very easily. 10^3 uSv = 1000 uSv = 1 mSv, etc...
Still very high readings, but if it was 1400 mSv that would be 1.4 Sv/hr which, 1 hour of that would be equivalent to the "Maximum allowed radiation exposure for NASA astronauts over their career". 4-5 Sv in "a short time" is considered fatal in most cases, time is a factor to fatality. The fact that these guys are still alive and posting makes me think that the actual readings was in uSv.
Also as people have pointed out, it's the dust they're kicking up and breathing in that's the dangerous stuff.

@Dive talk This video series has been crazy! Just a note on the radiation levels. At 8:06 the dosimeter shows 1,34 and I assume that is millisieverts even though they say something about over one thousand.
Now, a chest xray is 0,01 mSv, so staying there they're basically constantly getting 134 times the amount of chest xrays *EVERY HOUR*! Dont even want to think what the levels are in the water or the absolute worst about this; the dust they breathe in all the time. It carries the radiation to their lungs and stays there.

    • @OUOU46
      @OUOU46 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think it's might be mSv as well, if so, mean every hour they get more than people outside's limit 1,340 times. (1 Milli-sieverts = 1,000 micro-sieverts). Normally the annual recommended does limit is 1mSv/yr, and people who live normal live maybe get just below 0.01 mSv/yr. If I guess right they would had collected radiation enough to life more 100 years than normal people.

the water would not be radioactive at all, just the original contaminated dust.
In general, water from nuclear plants is completely safe, you could probably drink it if you wanted to without much issue.
even on active reactors the water used in them to create the power they produce is even safe, and drinkable.
It gets turned to steam over and over again, it is just distilled water basically.
Though the crud that builds up inside the pipes is still kinda nasty, but that same crud builds up in home water pipes, so you are drinking it anyway.

and radiation workers in the US are prescribed up to 50mSv/yr, so i'd say with iodine pills they can stay there for about 48hrs/yr before they need to be seriously worried.

they have a break in period of 5 dives, after that you do not need to bring light because they will light up the area for you.
After 10 dives they can charge a tesla and after 20 dives you can power your house with them.

I think it’s cute they left snacks hahaha thinking about the other broskies that might be radioactive diving 😂😂 if I got lost in there then found that munch I’d be happier haha. Hopefully the rats don’t find it

Not gonna lie. After watching the reaction #3 I couldn’t wait so I went and found the rest of it and watched this already. Still looking forward to Woody and Gus’s insight tho.

Same! Is he dead or alive? I had to check, don’t think they really understood how easily he could have died there..

The Kreosan guys remind me of those life hack videos, where they intentionally show something absolutely absurd.
"At the beach and want to leave your keys and phone?
Just put them in a diaper and melt some chocolate on it so no one will want to steal it."

Will you guys react to the "Plura Cave Disaster?" This is the first video I watched about cave diving, but it's concerning because these guys seemed very professional and yet they still died. Thanks.
