- The play-in tournament is the latest format change that the EuroLeague has had and it's already paying off. 15 teams competing for a playoff ticket with top ones trying to avoid the play-in and bottom ones hoping to make the train. Do you like the play-in?

the play-in is very much needed, it's an interesting mechanic that keeps the fans of lower ranked clubs entertained until the last match of regular season, eager to see if they can make it or not... one of the issues with regular season in a closed league system is that: since there is no relegation teams at the bottom just play those last few games without any motivation (since there is not enough time to make it to the playoffs anymore), play-in fixes that issue by letting two more teams join the post season, and two spots is a lot if you think about it, it extends the chances of making it to the post-season to the lower part of the leaderboard, and not just the middle part anymore... of course if you are dead last or second last trailing by many points you don't even deserve a chance so it's understandable and unfixable that just a couple teams could potentially play without motivation, but the middle-lower part definitely deserve to believe until the last game of RS
It’s fixable, last two - one team should be eliminated from EL and winner of eurocup should advance, like in football
@@Pwlkwl yes, in that case we wouldn't be talking about a closed league system anymore so play-ins wouldn't even be necessary since all teams would either fight for playoffs or for avoiding relegation, play-ins are only needed in closed leagues, it's a whole different matter, another very valid solution nonetheless
Punter got his wish. Sadly no play in tournament for Partizan from an Olympiakos fan
Why is it impossible for Partizan to enter play ins now?
@@drpz-9484It isn't,but they are in bad form
Be careful what you wish for punter😂
The story of maccabi is even more crazy because they achived 19 wins with basically 31/32 away games.
Yeah, imagine if they would play this season in their home court…
The only home game being against partizan lol
If you listen to entire Punter interview he said that he doesn't want to play it because your opponent can have good day that day, you're shooting bad and you're done even if you won against them already 2 times this year, he wasn't against it he just said he wouldn't be comfortable to play play-in
As a zalgiris fan is a very useful thing for us
Zalgiris is looking good 👍
Maccabi fan here and I think that the play in tournament is correct. If we were so good and deserved to be in the playoff we would either be there or win the play in game
The play in definitely has positives but I'd argue that win differential should be a factor. There should be a maximum allowed win differential for play in to ensue. But, I guess if we see the whole picture it probably does more good to the competitiveness of the league than not.
To me the play in tournament in the Euroleague will be very entertaining and competitive.
0:30 why does everyone forget about the actual first play-in tournament in 2020 between Blazers and Grizzlies
I didn't, when I say "the 1st play-in" I mean the first actual tournament, 2020 didn't have that format yet
@@BasketNews_com yes I get it what you said :)
Totally agree with you
Your argument against, could also be used for Baskonia who are one win away from being top8. I know it would be more games, but I would rather see a minileague of the 4 play in teams where the 2 best go through.
I like the idea of the Play ins, but imo it should be 7v10 (winner plays 2) and 8v9 (winner plays 1). Only one match, no second chances.
This is an European Cup!
So a knock out system would be enough!
Play-in has definitely increased the attractiveness of the EuroLeague. It made the league more competitive. Even though the format is still not perfect, they seem to move in to the right direction
I like the play-in format in the NBA because in the past teams from 5-7 sometimes deliberately try to lose games to dodge a 1st round opponent.. Now they rather play the defending champion in the 1st round than be in the play in..
I think that the 4 win differential is not so big. So, it would not be unfair if a team like Maccabi loses their top 8 spot to a team with 4 less wins.
Same argument can be made for the Champion. If the rank 1 team of the regular season has more than 4 wins more than the second team, lets give them the title without a final 4.
i still don't like it even as a partizan fan. but maybe it will grow on me
Just think that if you were 11th last year you would already been thinking about the next EuroLeague.
This year you are 11th and you can still win the title
@@vag657 oh if only i told you how many problems there are with our team its a miracle we aren't 15th, tho we maybe will be
Zalgiris is making play-in mark my WORDS!!!!!
The play in should come to play under a game deferential of 3 wins.
Playins are always nice to watch, problem is they sort of false a season's results as you highlighted at the end.
If there was no actual season, sure no problem at all, but like this...
Team A beats team B twice during the regular season and finishes it 2-3 positions ahead, they end up facing the same team in the playoffs and one of these things happen:
1. One of their main players is out
2. Team B gets a couple of lucky shots or calls
3. They are simply more spent than Team B and end up losing
What was the point of the previous 2 matches they had?
Or a team keeps giving it to lavine when vucevic is getting guaranteed points . But it's needed tbh
@@tafadzwamanzini5463 I think the issue is not the playins, but the season.
Let teams play seasons for their national tournaments.
For European ones, use some sort of group/round system, just not round-robin, so every single match counts.
NBA kind of requires play-in, although it sits very badly after a loooong regular season which should decide the playoff teams by itself, as teams tend to give up and tank or fix their playoff spot so early they really don't have anything to play for for months. Euroleague didn't really need play-in, as clubs have domestic leagues to prevent tanking, but it really adds excitement as majority of the teams were left out of playoffs but now majority are in the battle till the last round, something welcome after the needless enlargements of the league system towards NBA style half-year grind. Besides, I think one-off deciders better actually fit European series than NBA.
Positive!
I'm zvezda fan,idc about play-in lol,we bottled it
Are you a communist?
Swastika is band in Germany!
4wins less? how about the 8th seed fighting the 1st seed?
The play-in is only good ranked 7th to 10th are close cause otherwise wise u risk a better team missing the play offs only because they have a bad game
Should the Euroleague have a relegation system too? What do you guys think?
Teams do change year to year but there are too many "owner" teams that should also have a threat to miss the next season so yes please.
Most teams are on long term contracts so it's not that easy to implement. I do believe that the old format should be used and have teams earning spots through national leagues but the Euroleague product as it stands today would lose a LOT if some teams did not participate.
@@clockworkfrustration And basically impossible as the shareholder clubs wouldn't want to give up their cash cow. Instead we get this situation of privileges that gives unfair advantage for clubs like Žalgiris in their domestic league and stagnation as they don't even need to compete to make money. UEFA Champions League has been intriguing for the very reason you really don't know two years before who even are making the 32 and clubs will pay for their mismanagement.
@@Eppu_ParanormaaliI think the main reason this is happening is that the Euroleague wants to compete with the NBA, which I think is both silly and unnecessary. But the same thing (closed league with contracts) will happen to Champions League too eventually. Team sports are changing drastically and it might be nostalgia but I think we might have already witnessed their peak during the 90's.
@@clockworkfrustration Could be. In football I don't think it will get that far in Europe, but Euroleague is clearly creating their own NBA larp (though with much more character in its clubs) because FIBA has been weak and their alternative lacks all glamour. The reason, I believe, is indeed competition with FIBA rather than competition with NBA. ECA just want to use business models that clearly work in USA.
negative even if Oly was 10th. Noot fair fighting all year long to be left out with 4-5 wins more
In my opinion, with the play-in we go from "every game counts" to "every game counts...but a little less (apart from the 3 games of the play-in and a few games to be in the top 6 and stopping the fight for top 8 with the fight for top 10)."
so you make an effort and become 7th and then you have one bad day and loose against the 10th and your playoff spot, I am not a fan of it. I think there shouldn't be a second chance for those who didn't made it to the top 8.
That would require two bad days. 7th plays 8th for the 7th seed and if they lose they play winner of 9-10 for the 8th seed. And both of them at home. It's not that unfair especially as Euroleague is super competitive in the middle.
four fewer wins
So europe is handing out participation trophies now too.
NEGATIVE Maccabi can lose the playoffs because of this shit
Play in games are fun but if you have to artificially raise competitiveness, there's another problem you need to solve
terrible take, rethink it
have you even watched play in games? produced some of the best games and adds fuel
I hate the "Play-In-Format"!!! Wack teams with mediocre or bad records don't belong in the play-offs!! The NBA has been inventing bullshit gimmicks to make more money!! As for in Europe, I can't answer this but no mediocre or bad teams should get into any play-off!!
then beat those "wack" teams in play in and the problem is solved
first,
