    Hi Guys. Maybe Adam can pin this to the top so everyone sees it. I'm the guy who did this mod for Adam and sent him the console. I appreciate all the love I've received regarding the mods/design of the console, but unfortunately I'm no longer doing dreamcast mods. If anything changes I'll keep the post updated.

      @Lythero 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nooo that sucks!
      I just caught this video and was about to immediately contact you for a modded dreamcast (just the region & VGA mod) Is there any way you'd reconsider? D:

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    grabi SOFT Exactly 50 games out of the nearly 800 titles for the Dreamcast (worldwide) do not support VGA. This would be 6.25%, not 20%.
    Burned games do in fact damage the console do to the poor nature of the rips. Though I will concede if the rips are properly optimized, this issue is severely reduced, but still present.
    You're right that the Dreamcast has not been commercially relevant since 2001. At no point did I claim burning games was like taking money out of the pocket of game developers. It's true they wouldn't be making money on it now regardless.
    However, this wouldn't be true of independent developers who still make games for the Dreamcast.

      Don't forget that you can turn off the VGA mode so his other point is also wrong.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      AceSim Gaming Depends on the VGA box actually. Most don't support that function.

      lassi kinnunen Yes, it's not properly optimized.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks.
    I've considered it.
    Though lately people have found ways to reduce the damage caused by burned games.
    It comes down to the version you get.
    Older rips are terrible because they're highly compressed and the laser has a really hard time focusing on them.
    Very recent rips, well they're 90% better.
    Maybe I will make a video addressing this whole thing at some point.
    Thanks for watching.

  • @AdamKoralik

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    1: You'll have to mention that directly to him.
    2: Really the only reason is a handful of independent tools are incompatible with the region free bios. But for the the most part it wouldn't have been an issue. Ironic, since the BIOS is based on the development kits.
    3: Yeah, I guess I didn't make that clear. I was trying to explain it to a layman. The cable ultimately determines the video quality, and to achieve what the system is capable of you need a VGA box, or a mod like this.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Then you're in for a hell of a treat.
    I'm jealous man, I wish I could experience Shenmue again for the first time.
    No two playthroughs are ever the same.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those prices are just ridiculous. And how any company can possibly mess up a DC VGA-Box is completely beyond my understanding. It consists of virtually NOTHING. 3 capacitors, 4 resistors, 2 diodes and the jackets of course. That's all it takes to alter the VGA-Signal lines the correct way. And that stuff costs way under 2 Dollars. As for the mod: With the black cover an the red swirl, I would have let the original LED in. For me, a blue LED looks only nice along with the blue swirl. Having done this mod myself about 5 times now, I must say there are much better positions for the VGA- and Audio-Jackets, although the system is very compact on the inside. Switches on the side of a system should be completely forbidden, since they ruin the overall look. And the Dreamcast ist a beautifully designed system. He could have easily installed that switch on the back. If you know what you're doing, you don't even need a switch for the VGA-Mode. Wired correctly, you can make the DC switch to VGA automatically as soon as a VGA-cable is attached. Nevertheless a nice video for an interesting mod.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Performance one or just any one? As I said in the video, they're not all made the same.
    But if you see the Performance one for that cheap, grab it.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm glad you aren't having issues with it.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's in the settings menu. It's extremely easy.
    The only question that can trip you up is that it asks if you want it in widescreen or letterbox. If you're using a widescreen monitor, which I'm guessing you are, select widescreen.
    It asks if you can support 480p, 720p, and 1080i.
    Personally I suggest saying yes to the first two and no to the third. But that's just because I don't like 1080i.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did two videos on it bud. If the video quality of this one doesn't say all it needs to, then you won't need it.
    I highly recommend it.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a pretty big difference.
    Independent releases and Bleemcast were made with the MIL-CD exploit in mind. Original games were not. Forcing them to run through it is not how the console is designed to work.
    But the great thing about facts is it doesn't matter if you disagree with them, because they're still right.

    Yeah, he wanted me to have them match, but I just couldn't resist.
    It's very unique, and the blue LED ends up being a surprise.
    Besides, all my other Dreamcasts have an orange LED.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your review is the first positive one I can recall.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes I have.
    The XBox 360 uses emulation, not actual hardware to run original XBox games.
    As a result it's buggy and incomplete. Not all games are compatible, and those that are tend to have issues.
    However, the plus side is the 360 rerenders the games in 720p, so they look very nice.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depends on where you are and what you want with it.
    If you're in the US and JUST want the console with maybe a controller and cables, don't pay above $40.

  • @AdamKoralik

    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for watching bro.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, that's not what I said.
    I said it puts out a better video resolution.
    Well, at least than the Wii Mini. The regular Wii and the Dreamcast both put out a 480p signal.
    Resolution, image clarity, and graphics are three different things.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Manually.
    You can set it to upwards of 1080i.
    Though as far as I know no game supports above 480p.

  • @OldClassicGamer
    @OldClassicGamer 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    10 years and you didnt do it? Is it really that hard? One guy did Shenmue on French with Japanese voices so I dont see why is English one so hard to do

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Comment all you like.
    The Dreamcast is the first of the sixth generation consoles.
    It never got remotely pushed, so it's hard to say what it might have done with the right people behind it.
    But yes, it was technically less powerful than those three. But since it was released in 1998 in Japan, that's not surprising.

  • @AdamKoralik

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you misunderstood.
    In North America the SCART format simply doesn't exist. So to use it we have to use SCART to component or HDMI adapters.
    For whatever reason, said adapters never carry the sound.
    So to get sound you need custom match cables with RCA audio jacks, or SCART audio extractors.
    It's a pain in the ass to say the least.

  • @guitarnub3

    Believe it or not this comment just made my day! I just got my first Dreamcast import a few days ago(Puyo Puyo~n) and I couldn't run it with Utopia. I've been at a loss for a couple days and resorted to playing on a burned copy that doesn't even have music. Thanks to your mention of Codebreakers I now have a boot disc that will run it.Thank you for inadvertently helping me Adam!

    It's so refreshing to watch your videos, Adam! I really was beginning to feel isolated in my gaming tastes & pessimistic outlook on modern gaming. Everybody masturbates to the PlayStation 2 & Sony brand in general with no questions asked.. then they jump on the "Sega's dead & it's because they were bad at everything" bandwagon & are starting to do the same with Nintendo. "Oh, look at me I can watch movies on a disc! I'm a far superior gamer in every way possible!" and then Xbox being credited as the online-gaming springboard.
    *face palm*

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I appreciate that bud.
    Very few games allow for that exploit, and all the ones that do also can be force booted into VGA with Codebreaker.
    But there are like 20 games out there that will never work with VGA, period. Sadly.

  • @xSk3MEx
    @xSk3MEx 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for the help. I contacted him and It's significantly cheaper to just buy the VGA BOX and do it that way. I guess if you don't already have a DC, and you want one "fully loaded", I'd recommend the guy. Or if you have $150 plus shipping just laying around :P

    So glad I read these comments. I recently picked up a DC and plan on collecting many good OFFICIAL games. Until I can find and afford them all however (some are RIDICULOUSLY priced), this is my only other alternative. I don't wanna screw up my console playing crappy bootleg games, so I went to the website and basically found some "safer" files. Currently burning CVS2! Thanks a bunch.

    I've had the clear VGA box pictured in this video since 2008 and it has worked flawlessly ever since. I love your videos man but don't knock something until you have tried it (assuming you haven't) I picked it up for $19.99 and it has been worth every penny.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I stand by my position.
      I'm glad yours works, but that's not how the story usually plays out.
      It's poorly designed, uses mediocre components, has poor monitor compatibility, and lacks features a lot of the higher end models have.
      That said, it's still worlds better than the shitty Tomee cable.

    • @Dzonemp
      @Dzonemp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got one too, no complaints here.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if I'd say they're worth that much, but they do cost that much.
    They're exceedingly rare.
    Only released in Japan and North America. Very few were released in either region, especially in North America.
    The quality difference using them is vastly superior to the alternatives.
    On top of that, Nintendo used custom chips to make them. So, no third party can make them.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    One, they're pressed discs.
    Two, it primarily has to do with the way the data is layed out on the disc. Independent releases built them correctly, they space the data apart because they know they have about 700 MB to work with.
    Where as burned games tend to be compressed, poorly, to squeeze 1 GB of data on to a 700 MB disc. As a result the Dreamcast has to try really hard to read the data in a very confined space.

    Switched to VGA years ago, worth every penny. Its a must have for modern tv's! I've been using that clear VGA box w/o a problem, it was $30 three years ago, which jumped up to $70+ on amazon last time I checked.

    Almost all games support 480p, and at the very least it'll display in a clean 480i. No disadvantage to the component cables.
    I just don't like interlaced images, since we can't have 1080p on it, I go with 720p.

    Sort of, it's an all purpose cartridge slot.
    The card in there provides a few functions. One, it's a memory card. Two, it's an Action Replay/GameShark cheating device, Three, it's an import enabler. Four, it adds extra RAM to the system.

    In case anyone likes to play one of the few games which does not support VGA (or RGB in my case)... I once had a game which did not work with my RGB cable. It just did not boot. I then disconnected the cable, turned on the DC, had it set to auto-load and waited until the laser sledge made those remarkable sounds and then stopped. I then knew the game loaded and re-plugged the cable and .... had output on my RGB cable. I am pretty sure it will work with VGA too. Don't remember which game so I have not tested with my hdmi box yet.

    I suppose anything could go, but the most common thing is the laser.

    Not a problem! Note that the normal SCART (RGB) connection is 480i and VGA is 480p, so normally VGA is better than SCART. But the XRGB-mini only accepts SCART for upscaling, so I had to modify my VGA box for 480p SCART. Beharius is planning on selling an add-on to the Hanzo to do this but it's not released yet. To me it was worth it even though the XRGB-mini is $400, it has really good high quality/speedy upscaling unlike the shitty one that Adam Koralik shows off in his popular video.

    Sure thing.
    If the VMU has nothing else on it, you're good.
    And the PAL versions are the best.
    Transferring your save from the first one is huge.

    Well, I need to be fair, I have never used that clear one. But a ton of people, people who I've been told have multiple VGA boxes, say it's crap.
    But I guess it's the best of the crappy ones, for whatever that is worth.
    EBay really is the only option that I know of.
    Though I believe there is a guy on the Assembler-Forums making new ones that are getting pretty good reviews.

    I'd love to try that version of Shenmue II X.
    Good luck with the Dreamcast version though, I've literally been trying for 10 years.
    True.

    I'll give you some solid advice here.
    Cheap and converter do not go together.
    There are plenty of cheap ones, but they NEVER do the thing they're supposed to.
    Sadly, only the expensive ones actually do it correctly.
    I've pissed away a lot of money on cheap versions of this stuff.
    That's why I put up a lot of these videos, trying to help people, though oddly a lot of people get pissed off about it. But whatever.
    Point is, don't cheap out. You'll regret it.

    For the Dreamcast? Or for everything or what?
