“There has been no Brexit disaster:” James O’Brien vs LBC caller

  • Has the toxicity now faded from the political debate in the UK?
That was the question James O'Brien was asking his listeners today. Caller Peter agrees that it has - but for a reason that nobody else has brought up. He believes the political venom has dried up because Remainers like James have realised they were 'wrong about Brexit.'
It's a good old fashioned Brexit ding-dong in the year 2024. Enjoy!

It is better. We now have regulatory autonomy where EU law previously had primacy (exc. NI), enhanced discretion over EU migration and a more robust opt out from EU federalism (when were British public ever directly consulted on Maastricht, Lisbon or Accession of new members). Economics is not the be all and end all.
Of course if more people believe life would be better inside the EU as opposed to what we have now, and that view is democratically expressed, I will accept that.

Royal Mail had automated custom forms that allowed easy custom declarations, a guy I work with had to close his own business down as they removed the option for this service, he contacted them and offered to pay to use it and they said it's just gone, no other option. It made exporting to many countries economically unviable for a small company with the endless hand filling in of repetitive long winded forms for the same item.

Sadly a lot of those industries people voted for Brexit because they “didn’t want someone in Brussels telling them what to grow” and I live in a farming community.
What I don’t understand is WHY we cannot start to have new votes on rejoining the E.U so as soon as that door is opened we can go back.
If the E.U falls apart and we all become independent autonomous states then we will be at huge risk of another war and a certain state invading Ukraine will swallow up half of the countries for breakfast.
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS when you ask people to make a decision on the countries future who are not equipped to make any sort of logical or intelligent decision.
You wouldn’t just allow people to drive cars without being taught and educated and then requiring an official test pass FIRST. So WHY do we allow anybody and everybody to vote and control the future of the country??
You should have to take an exam paper in order to vote imo.

Brexit was a disaster for me. I started an electronics manufacturing company in 2012. We make innovative products. We exported to the EU. I got to see how easy it was to trade with EU countries. Then clueless idiots like Peter voted to leave the EU which made exporting a constant headache. My company is the type of company that people want; manufacturing, technology, R&D etc... This idiot would want my company. He's clearly too ignorant to understand the two things are at odds though.

As the caller said, some people who supported remain, such as Osborne, aren't economists, and got it wrong. Osborne got lots of things wrong, but it doesn't prove the other side right.

It is worth remembering that Remain’s predictions were predicated on Leave’s lie that it would trigger Article 50 immediately (24 June 2016) and leave the EU two years later (24 June 2018). In practice, it balked (ostensibly because of the damage such a move would have), triggering it on 29 March 2017, only leaving 31 January 2020, with a transition period to 31 December 2020. As of today, it still has not implemented all of the measures necessary for Brexit, including inbound border controls. The reality is that Remain were right, Leave panicked and went for a slow puncture rather than a blow out.
