It's a common misconception to call that spoiler "whale tail", but that one is known as the "tea tray" for its raised brim on all sides. The "whale tail" was a cantilever spoiler from before these cars had an intercooler, so it didn't have that big box underneath that you see on the tea tray.
It's crazy to think, but the 930 Turbo debuted without an intercooler... Once Porsche added the intercooler, the 930 changed from the whale tail to that tea tray to make room.
IIRC, surplus whale tails from Porsche's 934 racing program continued as a factory option on the normally-aspirated 911's
