The audience had been begging for this all night. Crushed the dark star sign. I love the way the crowd reacts to the unveiling of this beautiful version. This was most certainly a beautiful night and morning indeed.
Can't remember how many times I saw them (all before this concert). Can't remember how many times they played DS. Not sure it was any at all. Rare moment. Kinda happy that I don't remember. Some will understand that.
It was at the "Syndrome," Chicago, November of 1970 where I first heard the Dead, and Pigpen was playing too. "Dark Star" was a heavy trip: I myself had transcended on and excellent quality mescaline---'twas a Religious Experience, indeed.
Check out Nassau 1979. A comp . A bunch of folks got beaten at Nassau Jan 11 or 10 shortly after this show. They played st Stephen and dark. Streight star
I always think of this as a very mournful version - closing Winterland and all. Slow and very deliberate, like they had something definite to say. The closing of the 70s as well.....
I lit out from San Jose the day before (you could kind of hear Tom Petty inside a little) and didn't get to sleep that night until after Animal House, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Flying Karamazov Brothers, the Blues Brothers, and the first two sets. I was able to catch a few winks in the bleachers behind the stage until the Other One woke me up (or was it falling pieces of the ceiling of that old building). With this video I finally get to see the whole show. It's cool. I kinda time-travelled a bit at the show, too.
@AriDillProductions This show was broadcast live on PBS TV - KQED in San Francisco. I know, I was at home watching this live at the time. Great show! Ken Kesey and some Pranksters were on stage doing some bizarre stuff at one point.
...pure Bliss, without judgement I would have adored to have been in their vicinity challenging the same forms they pursued wiLLingly. What strength they had I would have also blindly accepted, but with eyes closed who can see the way forward?
This was always a favorite. Somewhere I still have the hissy old cassette of this that I listened to for years. Long, slow and mournful to send out the old Winterland. That transition into The Other One is truly siiiiiiick....bummer this video ends right then....
The grateful dead went to Nassau coliseum 10 days later and played st stephen.... darkstar in to warf rat. I was 16, but it was a great treat. You can find the show in archives etc. there is a fair recording but that was beyond. Look it up. The police beat the heck of people on the other side of the collocium. The first night they played this and st stephen and the people practically ripped their clothes off !!!!!
I believe it was arranged as a live new year's eve telecast on the san francisco public television station. they did this the year before (77/78) as well.
Quite likely one of their best performances, especially if you consider the ensuing transitions into "The Other One", then briefly back to "Dark Star" and on into "Wharf Rat" etc...brilliant
@uforty2 Ha! A tourhead buddy of mine always yelled "ALIGATOR" before every song but, alas, it never came to fruition. Maybe the guy yelling "DARK STAR" did it before every song and, well.....you know.
I've been listening to alot of '73 and '74 dead shows and this video shows that there jams seem alot more pinned down if you will when they have two drummers. When it's just Billy it's much more free flowing. No offense to Mickey he's great but those jams from the aforementioned era are liquid.
Although the playing on this version is perhaps not as “inspired” as some of those early ‘70s versions, the sound mix & sound of the instruments is as good as I’ve ever heard.
The jam that defines the Dead's essence in its purest form, thus giving a snapshot to what and where they are musically at any given point in their career, shouldn't have different versions compared to each other? So basically, a DS played in mid 68, when they were only starting to explore it as a steady two chord jam that doesn't evolve much, one played in 72-74 when they were taking it to unexplored outer space jazz territory, and one played in, say, 89, when they were more or less aimlessly noodling in MIDI space are the same?
I appreciate that people like the Dead but I have never been able to get into them…Just sounds like long drawn out musical noodling to me. To each his own…

that is my dad yelling Dark Star and happy new year.
I am your father
Cool!!
IT" ME FOOL
The dynamics of Jerry's playing. The whole band for that matter. So sweet.

no version of dark star is "overrated" in fact in fact every version of dark star is my favorite...shall we go? you and i? WHILE WE CAN
The 1/10/79 version is better but this is clearly more historic.

I always know when its the Dark Star from Winterland because the guy in the crowd yells "Dark Star!" right before they start in. Amazing
Robert Hunter let the secret out. on 3/29/90 the buzz was Dark Star in the lot prior. soooooooo cool.
oops. I meant Bill Graham. Just read he demanded thd play Dark Star for the closing. lol

This was such a great show. It is one of my fondest memories and always brings tears to my eyes!
This is a strange jam so much talent.

Just the joy - I was blessed with DS at RFK 90. This was long overdue. The joy!

One of the best shows ever captured on video!
This is a mind bending dark star.

interplay between Jerry & Phil is beyond words.❤

Yep. Ross
Another yummy version!
oh, this should have thousands of views!
My favorite concert recording ever! Damn I wish I had been there!
One of my favorite concerts.
that transition into the other one is siiiiiick.......
always a pleasure watching these dudes "operate"
Great transition.
Excellent!
this in fact could be one of the greatest dead moment because it was a big deal and the show is top notch
"I dont't know how to put this.... but it's kind of a big deal."
Seventies dead is my favorite dead

The closing night of Winterland. My second Dead show. Not my last, though. 🤓🖖🏾✌🏽

I've always thought they sounded better when it was just Billy.
It only takes those first couple notes to know XD
Golden Ratio
This is Phil’s song driving that train into space

Concerning this Dark Star. Hadn't it been many many many shows since they had last played it?
1535 days
Long live grateful dead!!
Lyrics dont start till more than 7 minutes of beyond perfect Dark Star jams * * * 7:22
exactly!
You can always tell a new head by their need to compare Dark Stars.
If you get confused, just listen to the music play.

Who recorded all these videos?
I like the 1/10/79 Dark Star better. I always thought this one was lackluster.
4:31 AM ????
Did the song end like that?
No, they went into The Other One then back into Dark Star.
Phil...
takes eleven minutes before the bridge
This dark star lags...go to 8-27-72 9-8-72
2-13-70

Who asked
No dispute About taste.,....eh?
This version is not that great - It's way overrated.
