Buck taught Maddie some boxing and self-defense when she first got to LA so he's got some experience already lol - remember that he also (jokingly) challenged Eddie after finding out about the whole illegal fighting thing. Plus it was hinted that Buck played football in high school by Maddie's former co-worker/fellow nurse.

His wife is a 911 operator. Earlier she got a call from the babies mom, another woman not one in the trunk. They were in a car and she was acting like she was calling a hotel. He found out and crashed the car and got away with the baby. His wife was listening to the call to see if she could have done anything differently and Howie heard the call. In the call this guy called the baby that. He knew the guy got away and was in the area, because he kidnapped another woman. He realized it was that guy by how he was acting, what he called the baby, and probably his voice.
He was a Kidnapper who was trying to replace his Wife and Infant who left him. He kidnapped the Baby and The Woman. (The Babies Mother was found after being kidnapped but was burned critically in a car accident he caused.)
His original girlfriend/wife took their baby and went into hiding before he even moved to L.A. according to his sister. So he was a psycho all along. He just decided to start a new "family" by abducting a woman and baby.
