    How has the number of cup holders become such an important issue???? lol The Dodge has EIGHT and the Ford has FIVE! I'm thinking who needs that many cup holders???

      Joey Oliver isn’t an important issue but ya I’m going to mention it. And the more the better, I like my cup holders lol

      cup holders are a big deal to me because they hold more than cups. For instance I keep my makeup in one and extra change in another so I find uses for them. in fact sometimes when I have a cup my cup holders are full of other stuff. 😁

    Which van is more reliable though? I think that's more important when you get one of these to live in and drive in a lot.

    • @PhamVans
      @PhamVans 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luck of the draw. Reliability on vehicles comes down to preventative maintenance done by the owner.
      There's a bit of chance involved also due to the mass production element as well. You can never know if the van was properly assembled and inspected off the line that day. Maybe the line manager wasn't paying attention, and had too many tequilas over the weekend in Cancun.
      And if you're buying used, in most cases, people used it for work (company/fleet vehicles). Which means they've been beat up. Only way to know at this point is to drive it around for a few days and have a few mechanics look at it to get a varied opinion.
      On a side note, a gas engine is where it's at for maintenance. No turbos, no diesels. Turbos have limited life spans and modern diesels have been infected with emissions limitation devices.

      Mercedes sprinter diesel is the best van for a delivery driver. Transit is bigger and brakes well. Dodge Ram has best turning radius though.

    They are both good very good vans. Comes down to personal preference / needs for the most part.
    Transit PRO:
    * more engine choices
    * more roof height choices (the medium roof is 6' inside, an overlooked option for average and shorter folks)
    * more popular = more peer knowledge, US aftermarket support, more used Transits for sale
    * mechanical limited-slip differential option due to RWD
    * better towing due to RWD
    Transit CON:
    * backup camera in the door so you can't see if you are backing up with the doors open
    * relatively short wheelbase for vehicle length
    * least ground clearance of any fullsize cargo van
    * costs more
    Promaster PRO:
    * very wide. 4" wider at the bottom and more like 6" at the top since it doesn't narrow significantly up top.
    * more cargo volume at every length
    * better traction due to FWD
    * lower cargo area due to FWD. This gives 10" more headspace for a given roof height
    * commodity engine and trans (3.6l pentastar, 62TE trans) easily sourceable
    * .9" more ground clearance than Transit
    * better turning radius for each wheelbase
    * costs less to buy and operate: my TCO calculations show the Transit costing 6.7% more over 5 years (including purchase, fuel for base engines, maintenance, insurance, etc)
    * dominates European RV market = European aftermarket support (but can be expensive to import)
    Promaster CON:
    * only one gas engine option
    * FWD, if you don't like that
    * some folks don't like the bus-like driving ergos
    * rebadged FIAT Ducato, if you base your buying decisions on memories of the 1970s
    I bought the 159" high roof Promaster and absolutely LOVE it.
    Here is a comparison of van specs for those currently making the decision:

    I work for a company that has mostly Ford Transits and a few Promasters. I was unlucky enough to get the Promaster. In my opinion having lots of experience with both vehicles the Ford is far more reliable. Promaster at 79k was having heads rebuilt, constant coolant and oil leaks. Alk of our promasters have smelled like coolant from the time they were new. Also the promaster gas option is extreamly underpowered. And a nonstop annoying electric fan that constantly cycles. The biggest problem with the Transits we have are rear brakes. The Transit hands down blows the Promaster out of the water in almost every category.

    I rented a ford from U-haul, camped in the back for a week in Florida. I agree the rear view mirror camera is poor, I almost backed into someone at a crowded gas station. It did have a cigar lighter type outlet in the back. It times out when the ignition is off, like the interior lights time out. I got up to 25 mpg on the highway driving gently. I liked it very much but I have seen a lot of bad press on various forums and you tube. High top must pay a penalty in mpg.

    I think this is a great video on the Dodge Ram Pro-Master. I watched a video review on the Sprinter, Ford Transit, and Dodge Pro-Master. It was a professional race car driving them on a dry track. He rated them in this order, Ford Transit first, Sprinter, than the Dodge Pro-Master. I think they are all great vans and it basically comes down to personal preference.
    I will do more reviewing before I decide on which van to choose.
    Thank you so much for this video!

    • @WheresYourNeighborhood
      @WheresYourNeighborhood  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shavauna Ronan thank you. I'm surprised they weren't rated as Mercedes, ford then dodge. Clearly the Mercedes is the best but I believe it only comes in diesel and I don't want diesel. The ford probably does drive better but for van life I think the dodge wins. Front wheel drive is better in the snow and getting out of ditches. The cab is a lot nicer in the dodge. The dodge high top (there's only a low and high) is 6' 3" inside but the ford medium is only 6 ft so then I'd have to pay more and get the high top ford which looks way too tall. It's a close call with the ford and dodge. I'd be fine with either one. The Mercedes I would prefer but I don't want diesel because of the expense of gas and maintenance

    I've got the High roof, long wheel base Transit New Zealand model, and it definitely has a few things over the one you reviewed here. Including:
    - USB port beside the back door.
    - Sliding door that locks open.
    - Big storage space over the cab.
    - NZ has diesel, manual only
    I certainly don't fit in many parks. Often I can reverse in and the tail hangs over the end of the park happily. Sometimes I just poke out and choose a park that's got plenty of space for people to go around :)

    • @fratermus5502
      @fratermus5502 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Transit in this vid doesn't have the overcab space because it is a low roof model.

    I have heard that the promaster transmissions are weak, have you found that. What about gas mileage between the two. Some comments below say that the seat is very uncomfortable, I am very short, do you think, it would be better? I am also looking to camperize a van and trying to decide on which van would be best" the Ford or the Dodge. I have a Dodge Caravan now and find the driving seat very comfortable. I do want more space and head room, now. Thank you for your informative video.

    • @WheresYourNeighborhood
      @WheresYourNeighborhood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bergeron Designs mpg is about the same on both. The dodge is front wheel drive so that alone I think makes it the better choice. Going off road or getting stuck in snow the front wheel is better. I've heard about the transmissions too, if you are really into mechanics and cars you will feel a difference but I don't really. I have friends that have had dodge and rams up to 300k miles with no issues. There's always lemons out there with every company though

    The $1,000,000 question!
    I ended up going with a promaster myself mainly because of the extra width. I also found the driver cockpit more comfortable to be in. The dash design is easy on the eyes; the round edges with nothing too fancy on the design.
    High roof extended was already the ultimate choice when I was shopping here myself. I'd Be damned if I had to crawl around like a rat in my own house.
    Parking isn't all that bad, sticks out a bit but well worth it for the extra real estate.
    Gas is a must, and I wouldn't get no diesel or turbo options. The simpler the mechanics, the better the maintenance. Average Cost of ownership is slightly less on the promasters when comparing the 3.7 vs 3.6. The 3.6 powertrain is widely available. (Lots of wranglers on the road!)
    With the turbos and the diesels going way up in average maintenance costs. With that being said, a turbo would be nice on a new van with warranty. The extra power would make merging easier, especially in the metropolitan.

    I finally gave up on getting the transit, the load floor comes up to my knee, I couldn't even get in it without a stool. Looking at the promaster which looks really good right now. My questions would be how dependable is it, how does it drive, AND the secret number that is the best guess for mpg on a v8. I swear I saw a promaster on the site with a V8 option, but I don't see it now.

    The Promaster is FWD. Add weight in the back and you reduce weight on the wheels that get power. Also, it's a Fiat.

    • @markfabre7682
      @markfabre7682 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Promaster IS front wheel drive BUT wheel base is longer so more weight in cargo area is shifted to the front wheels instead of being balanced over the rear.

    I test drove all the top 3 vans (Sprinter, Transit, Promaster) and I came away with my favorites in that order. I really wanted to like the Dodge on the account of it being the cheapest, but holy crap the driving position is the absolute worst. I read a bunch of non-van life reviews on it after my test drive and many people came to the same conclusion.
    No tilt steering or seat height adjustment, and me being 6’3” I have to slide the seat all the way back which still cramps my legs in the nonexistent footwell...which in turn leaves me way too far away from the wheel having my arms outstretched constantly.
    I think the issue stems from the fact that it’s a rebadged Fiat Ducato, and was designed for (generally) smaller Europeans.
    I would have to guess you must be either 6’ or under if this doesn’t affect you...I’ve heard you drove this thing across the country, so I’m curious as to how you feel after a long drive.
    Also I’m in agreement as far as performance, it was the slowest and worst handling of the bunch.
    Sorry I know this sounds like ripping on your ride, I’m just actually curious as to how you overcome the ergonomic obstacles I mentioned.

    • @WheresYourNeighborhood
      @WheresYourNeighborhood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never driven the sprinter and didn't consider it an option for me because of the price and that it's diesel. I'm 6 foot and first I didn't like the non tilt wheel but now I forgot all about it. The dodge seems more comfortable to me. Drove it across the country twice now and it was pretty good except going up hills but I assume they are all terrible at that. The brakes are smooth but not good enough, the ford brakes are great but too touchy I could see my self tapping them and having the van jerk to stop and getting rear ended. But the doge I could easily hit someone from behind since they don't stop that easily in a fast situation. I like the handling on U turns and parking but it does seem slow at acceleration.

    • @James-fg5no
      @James-fg5no 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree.. all good with Dodge, except the driving position.. it's way beyond awkward, almost at dangerous level for me. I honestly don't know how people drive it full time... I also saw many posts about delivery employees complaining about the driving position in the Dodge. I leaned towards Dodge until I sat behind the wheel. Ford by far has more comfortable driving position in my experience.

      Phillip, regarding the Promaster's legroom issue, I concur.

    • @WheresYourNeighborhood
      @WheresYourNeighborhood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JC Leeson I didn't feel a difference in driving position or leg room between the dodge and ford. Both of them the seats don't recline almost at all, and force you to sit up very straight. I like this but I would like to lean back more. Leg room seems the same to me in both. If you are bigger I could see the wheel getting in the way with the dodge since there's no tilt wheel. But it is telescoping so you could just bring it closer to you and get it off of your thighs.

My pre build van only budget is around $25K, most interested in either the pro master or the transit but if the extra bed side to side rules out the transit, then that is major. Get a sprinter. I run a time sensitive delivery service. My 2011 has 540,000 miles and my 2014 has 281,000 miles both problem free, just regular oil changes, def fluid and brakes. We bought a Promaster in 2014 and went thru 2 transmissions and repaired a leaking head gasket the first 18 months, $11,000 worth of maintenance-typical Chrysler garbage. Just traded in the Promaster in for a 2018 Sprinter. Had to get rid of it before something else went wrong.

      The Transit has been made since 1965 (30 years longer than the Sprinter). The FIAT Ducato, sold as Promaster in North America since 2014, has been made since 1981 (14 years longer than the Sprinter).
      I have nothing against the Sprinter; it's a great van and is known for excellent driving dynamics. Now look at the annual sales of each van.... That really puts it into perspective.... Fords been at it with the transit since 1953 originating in Germany.
      Last year sales alone in US
      Transit 127K
      Promaster 40K
      Sprinter 27K
      NV2500 17K.
      Ford transit sales nearly double all the competition and that's just in the US alone. I own none but for the volume of sales Promaster Sprinter and Nissan sell and the issues they have are way way to many. They barely sell any units

      @fratermus5502 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the smaller vans I'd consider the NV200 for 25%-40% less (depending on options): better mpg, more interior height, much better ground clearance, etc. About the only advantage I see for Metris is looks and width.
      But for Metris money you could get a low roof promaster that would have 13" more cargo area height (!) and 13" more cargo area width (!), 2x the ground clearance, 63% more cargo volume (!) and no MB $$$ service bills.

    I think the Promaster is the ugliest van I've ever seen. The front end is just hideous. FCA is also known for its low initial quality ratings. I don't care for the Transit either because of the cheap interior. Personally, I'd choose a MB Sprinter for a van conversion, even with it's somewhat higher price, mainly because it offers am excellent V6 diesel and can be ordered with 4WD. They are known for excellent long term reliability. Maintenance is expensive on Sprinters, but I'd be doing my own, so that wouldn't be an issue for me. In any case, I hope your Promaster works out.

    The Ford acccelerates better. The Ford windshield sorta curves overtop of me providing excellent visibility. The Dodge visibility as annoying. High seat height but the top of the windshield was low in comparison.

    Whatever you do, remember this:
    - Chrysler has better and luxurious quality, drives better, seats are softer, and has the best storage
    - Ford is more for work, has more power in the engine, has better gas mileage, and has more features for construction workers/plumbers/electricians(you get it).
    Both are very reliable, but Ford is slightly more reliable than Chrysler.
    And remember, it's not only for the vans and the trucks, but for other vehicles in general.

    You should state that you have a very subjective opinion in this video. Just saying other than that good video.

    Bro the ford transit is no match for the ram atleast not that mini van you comparing

      @WheresYourNeighborhood  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      KNIGHT MARE KING right I like the ram more if you couldn’t tell from the video. I also wasn’t comparing the low roof in the video that’s all I had available. You must not have watched the video cause I explain how I’ve driven the bigger transit and the low roof is the same thing basically (not a mini van) lol.

    It is not a Dodge product it is a RAM product all belong under Chrysler-Fiat but the truck division is not under Dodge anymore(2010 the last Dodge Ram) it is under the name Ram(Only).

      bjorwen heard that a lot... in the u.s. We don't have those here so in the states it is a Dodge Ram promaster. Should I refer to it as a fiat even though we call it a promaster ?

    • @mountainhours4443
      @mountainhours4443 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes correct! Its a RAM. Put together by the RAM division in Mexico. Then added the 3.6 Penstar gas engine.
      The Fiat Ducato was shared in the development cost with Peugeot and Citreon known as the Boxer and the Jumper, respectively.
      Its not a Chrysler Promaster, its not a Jeep Promaster ,Its not a Dodge Promaster, its a RAM Promaster.
      PS Where's Your Neighborhood I am on your side. Enjoyed your video. I owned one since March of 2014.

    Yeah for me I think the RPM is one ugly van and the FT cab interior is so out dated , I’ll stick with my Chevy Express 2500 2010 I know Chevy hasn’t change the Express Van Since 03 , these vans imo are really work horses and reliable that’s why they haven’t changed anything from the front bumper to the rear bumper I know contractors with over 400,000 miles and still going strong as for my 2010 I have 105,000 miles and just regular maintenance and 2 sets of tires 2 batteries and new Brakes has never broken down in 9 years , but to keep up with demands they are finally offering a higher top in 2020 we will see

    Having driven both for work, thousands of miles.. The Promaster is definitely the better driver/handler. The Transit 150 is definitely old school.

    The ProMaster is cheaply built with plenty of sketchy plastic parts for your dismay.

      silvermonk13 I've had real leather before in another vehicle and it got really hot. I don't see how real or fake leather wouldn't get hot in the sun

    • @robsteve7043
      @robsteve7043 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      silvermonk13 It's not the material that dictates the heat. It's the colour. If you don't believe me put your hand on the top of a black car when it's in the Sun and then put your hand on a white car you'll burn your hand on a black car where a white car will be lukewarm.
