VW Bus in a field! can we make a deal?!? plus barn exploration!

- I return to a local farm to strike a deal (hopefully) on a classic 1961 VW van... in not so classy shape! watch as I dig through barns in search of treasures, and see if I can strike a deal on the van!
Jason: "I'm kinda disappointed about the monkey, though." Dang, that kid is cute, & has his dad's quirky sense of humor.

@@SwedishEmpire1700 Some dirt is fine, but that's bird droppings. They can carry some very nasty stuff. Alexander even warns Jason about it!
Those were some BUG turds, bugger than rat or bird. Likely raccoon or cat.
That *BUS* middle seat is a solid $3000. They're rare as hens teeth and the beautiful upholstery is extremely desirable.
I'm with Jason, roller skating monkeys always make a trip more enjoyable,
I have truly enjoyed watching the kids grow up..as much as your adventures..you are awesome parents..growing fine individuals to adulthood..js

You’re gonna think I’m crazy, but at 9:57 there is a large box of old spray paint. If they’re the right brand, they could be worth about $200 each. Search “vintage spray paint” on eBay and look at sold listings.
Wow. You have lots of work to do but I have faith in you. Can’t wait to see it restored to its former glory. My brother bought one new, took delivery in Germany. Then he and his family toured Europe for several weeks, brought it back to the US and kept it for many years.

OMG, when I saw that beat up VW bus in the field I thought what is Alex doing buying such a wreck.....THEN I thought back to the racoon eaten Rolls Royce and just knew that it'LL work out well.

It's so funny to me when ppl with hordes of junk that hasn't seen the light of day for decades say "oh no, we don't wanna sell it all at once" (ie. those reels for phonographs). Like, you think you'd be ecstatic to get it gone! I don't get it 🤷♀️
I don't like seeing so much stuff so messy and left lying there for decades. I'd like to see it all cleaned up and nice again. How can anyone just keep so much? It's baffling.
I guess it takes time to let go. They are selling it though.
@Kristen Kellett....or, there is the other end of the spectrum. A few years ago, I was regularly going to estate sales - looking for treasures. It seems like it always made me
sad because of some of the stuff I would see. I remember one particular house I went to - it was a very nice house , in a nice neighborhood and the owners had
passed away. All the things like wedding dress and family photos and home movies.....all being sold off because no family members had an interest. The husband
had been an airline pilot and there was a huge collection of old 8MM movie reels- which I bought. Still have not had a chance to view them.....just very sad.....
I thought Alex was asking if he was willing to sell some or if the guy wanted to sell them as a set. And that the guy was saying he was willing to sell less than the whole set to one person.

I agree that that’s how it started, but then the wife (or whoever?) jumped in and said they didn’t want to sell them all and the man backed up and echoed her. At least that’s how I heard it. But I didn’t go back to see/hear it again.
I got a vibe that she felt like Alex was overstepping. The man and Alex had an agreement as to how Alex could proceed by looking around to see what he was interested in. But that wasn’t how SHE would have done it and I think she was agitated by that and decided she’d slow his roll. Frankly, I think they’re lucky to find Alex who is willing to pay them to take those things off their hands so he can clean and restore them and out them into the hands of people who will care for them and enjoy them. Why would you want them to sit in that barn and quietly rot away?

A couple of minutes in, I am reminded to say something I have been thinking for a while, which is that regardless of how much I like seeing your children, [because they are all top kids] I really appreciate that their appearances are very limited. I regard this as a family channel but one that *doesn't* ever use the kids for views. On with the rest of the show!

Yes, the kids are there, but no one is tutoring them to be all cutesy or whatever in order to get more views. Just them being them.

@@Kels0423 Favourite Moon is thoughtfully complimenting Alex, not criticizing him! I'm pretty sure he doesn't do any worrying about such things. Yes we know him better by now, but there's nothing wrong with complimenting him as a parent. I know I appreciated it when people noticed and actually took the time to compliment me as a parent. It doesn't happen very often in this old world.
I love the car restoration videos. We had an old VW van once upon a time. The last trip we took with it was from Texas to Michigan. Ended up push starting it at a rest stop in the dark. Never forget that! I was sad to see the Rolls go, that is a beautiful car and a real tribute. Thanks.

Alex, you should consider using face protection and gloves when picking through enclosed spaces like this barn.
Some of the lumber in the barn is worth a fortune today! Have you seen the price of building materials lately!?
I'm guessing he has seeing as he is in the middle of getting a house built.
@@WellISaidItthe old, vintage and reclaimed lumber is totally different then the materials used to build their house. You're not going see anything to same type lumber not in thickness, hardness etc.
But I've mentioned it before(other places) doesn't appear to have interest in it, so those that love the old material need to hope it finds a new home where be appreciated.
I may be wrong, but that white stool that was laying upside down next to the deer skull in the attic of the barn looked to be a VW Bus camper stool, be sure to grab it! And if it’s not VW/ Westfalia it looks like proper height to be one! Also, that indeed was a VW steering wheel and column next to the rim and tire. Those wheels can be valuable, even if cracked. People usually repair them with JB weld/assorted putty and paint. And that upholstery looks awesome! After it thaws and with some elbow grease it could come out great! As long as there’s not any crazy holes or rips! You should totally keep it, especially with it being a transporter and having BOTH original seats! Would be great for the kids and future grandkids!

I am so happy you got the van! That is my dream car as well and I can’t wait to see the series on the restoration. That musical instrument case was very cool also! I’d imagine Alex purposely doesn’t wear gloves. A lot of people are insulted and feel like it’s a form of criticism of their things if you wear gloves. And I bet there’s a big bottle if hand sanitizer in the van!

Alex we have discovered Lost Car Rescue on Discovery channel. I think you will love these guys… they are about your age and rescue old vehicles.

Watch out. with these old WV wagons, they tend to catch on fire real easy, specially once they are put together and running.
Only when you ignore your fuel lines and hoses. Be thorough. And make sure you run the engine with ALL of the cooling tins in place. Be safe & good luck on the resto. (I have a '67 Kombi Sundial camper)

Hey Alex watching this video at this very moment and I have a suggestion for that old wooden toboggan. We have a grill/bar/brewery that goes by the name of Toboggan and actually has a ceiling length toboggan. This is in commemoration of London Ontario's one time tobogganing hills. I bet they would love such a sled for their decor. That sort of thing is hard to come by in these parts.
When i was a kid my fathers friend had a large farm with backroads with vehicles and semi trucks everywhere that i use to play in and wondered what the story was and why they ended up there. so i prefer finding vehicles in fields,barns and in the woods.its about the nostalgia

I nearly froze to death watching this. :) Don't know which would be worse, trying to drag that van out through the feet of snow, or waiting till spring thaw and dragging it through the mud. I kind of hate that those cylinders that have such historical value will sit there and continue to deteriorate.
I find that frustrating, too.
8:39 OOooo that sled is epic! They really don't make them like that anymore! I remember we had one just like it when I was a child and it really "brings back that Lovin Feelin"! LOL. Should have grabbed it IMHO. If he'd let it go that is. I'm surprised Alex didn't try to buy more from that barn. But he knows his business so I wouldn't presume to.

Those old Edison records are fascinating. Apparently, most of them are unplayed. They would be great for making digital copies. All the copyrights should have expired by now.

Dear Mr. Archbold and son.
For me it's always extremely sad to see, that absolutely everything that somebody owns (outside and even inside the barns/sheds), is rotting away or already too far gone. What a pity/shame. There is still a lot useable/sellable stuff to find, but the old man simply has to let go (easier said than done, I know). Not far in the future (after his death or after the property gets sold), everything will most likely be thrown away/dumped/crushed. You can see this happen all around the world. But especially in North America, because properties are often bigger than anywhere else.
2) Maybe Mr. Archbold should/could buy the 2 old Volvos too for having a project for one of his sons. There is a good Volvo community existing (at least in the USA) and absolutely every single piece respectively spare part is available. This fact makes a restoration of those sturdy cars possible and relatively easy (in comparison to other foreign cars).
In this sense: I guess the new Archbold family property needs a big barn respectively big storage building soon. ;-) :-)

I am a new fan from Massachusetts, USA. Love the VW van. I was in the first grade in 1961. It was a very special “one of a kind year” you know, the only one that said it’s name backwards too! I am looking forward to the finished van. Thank you for respecting good old things!

Very great find! Mango bus from early 60s with the original seats. Just the middle seat is a very sought after piece in the vintage VW community. Mango = bingo! I would not worry about the dents on the roof, the rust in the frame will be the major issue. Great project that merits a restauration.Try to keep the original paint as much as possible. Congrats on this find. A Volkswagen fan near Ottawa.

For the blue delivery van there is a you tuber in the lower half of the states called Turning Rust who takes these vans and restores them for wither hot roads or delivery vans agin if a person likes the patina look.

The last time I was in a Canadian park was probably 1968. And I would love to have a bus like that. We had a VW before VW's were cool.
Real question. How do places like this happen? Were there no disposal options in past decades? Did people keep things “just in case”? Why are these places so disorganized? No shade intended. I just really want to know.
I just want to say thank you. I have MS and am dealing with an issue where I'm having trouble swallowing and it takes me over an hour to get through a 1.5cup drink. I am feeling very stressed and can't handle watching most of the shows that I usually watch. But I have been following your channel since the potters house (I thank God that it popped up as a recommended vid) and I find comfort in watching your adventures and just listening to talking. As Alex was crawling out off the back of the van a local commercial came on for a VW dealer, and a saleslady was showing a shiny blue electric VW SUV, maybe Alex should get that instead 😁 I'm so curious, why do people just park those cars in a field to deteriorate?
