  • Only One Bag Under the Airplane Seat (5 Luggage Options)
    Today I am sharing 5 carry-on luggage choices for travelers who need one bag to fit under their seat in an airplane. You may travel on Spirit Airlines or on United Airlines in Basic Economy and you are allowed only one bag. Business travelers and leisure travel subscribers have asked me about the types of luggage I would recommend for when you can only travel with one bag that fits under the seat. This video will show you the dimensions of each luggage with two tiny tips at the end that will make a huge impact when you are allowed to take only one bag. #onlyonebag #carryononly #spiritairlines #basiceconomy

    Frontier has the same under-seat bag dimensions as Spirit: 18 x 14 x 8. My husband and I took a 5-day trip to visit family with just our “school-size” backpacks (18 x 14 x 7), including a few small gifts for three people. I packed my small crossbody purse in my bag. We did do a load of laundry halfway through, and we wore our heaviest clothes on the plane. I was pretty proud of us! I had watched several of your videos before our trip, and your packing tips helped A LOT-thanks!!

    I have spent 4 weeks in Europe with only 1 sleepwear, 1 fleece sweater, 1 raincoat, 2 socks, 1 pr walking shoes, 1 pr sandles, 6 underwear, 2 bras, 2 tunics (long enough to act as dresses in hot weather), 2 leggings (to go under the tunics in cold weather) and 6 shirts. That is it! Roll everything. It will fit in a backpack or small carryon suitcase. Most of Europe and airbnb have laundry facilities. Some discount airlines do not allow the second carry-on bag so you need room in the main carry-on. I take an empty backpack and wear it under a coat for extras.

      @@TravelTipsbyLaurie not really sure...It was a tote with a zipper and it had several outside zipped pockets. It could be no more than 11" tall, 15" long and 9" wide. I took out the padded inside divider as it would've been over the 11" tall. I was so worried about having it "pass"; however, the ticketing agent also had to be the gate agent too and we'd already had such a happy conversation that I think she didn't even check. Again thanks love your TH-cam videos.

I do like your fanny pack idea used as a crossbody. Thanks for the visual tip on the size for the under the seat bag. I just bought a new "Euro Flight Bag" which is 14x12x7. Phew. So glad that to know that it will fit. Now to go somewhere!

    Your tips are great! I follow them to the T and have never had a boarding issue or storage issue. These tips really make traveling much easier. I often observe people as the find their seat and watch as they try to stuff BIG shoulder bags in the over head compartment, which is barely enough space for a jacket on some of the smaller 3 seats to a row planes. Once a young lady started to lose the contents of her extremely large bag as she tried to stuff it in the overhead. I wanted so badly to lean over and suggest she subscribe to your video! Thanks again!

    Hi Laurie, just found your videos. Very well done. My husband is also a retired pilot but we were both in the Army and have mastered the ranger roll over 20+ years each. I'll race you any day! I use a Tumi for under the seat because inevitably, there is an electrical box taking up the space for my bag and I have to "squish" around it.

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha yes, the ranger roll is slow as molasses for me. Is the Tumi a backpack? Thanks for watching and happy retirement!

    • @CruisingEngineer
      @CruisingEngineer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TravelTipsbyLaurie The TUMI is a small duffle/gym bag style, very flexible. The secret to the roll: after you make the pocket (at the hem) and fold the left and right sides in ... I'm doing all this sitting on the floor .. the shirt is between my legs, fingers on the neck and ...... my heals on the pocket end ... I can pull and roll faster than you are rolling and smoothing.

      @@TravelTipsbyLaurie : Well I had to weight them. And I did not take the small suitcase wth me into the cabin. I was in no great hurry and the Airlines (KLM) are always glad to have as little luggage as possble in the overhead compartments over the seats.
      before I went to Amsterdam I bougt a little backback for the computer.
      But already on the flight to Amsterdam it turned out to be to small. So during the waiting time at Shippool Airport i bougt a somewhat bigger backback. When I got to the RootstechLondon conference. they gave each participants a backpack !!! That is how I ended up with Three ;).

If possible I wear a top with pockets, although those are harder to find. My husband wears a nice fishing vests that has many pockets. I'm obsessed with jujube bags and pouches for everyday and travel. Its a brand that's meant to be a diaper bag so all of their stuff is washable! Also its made out of squishy fabric so they're very packable. My favorites are the be quick (I use this as a packing cube and purse at my destination) the be zealous backpack and I fold a superbe in there to use as my extra tote/packable bag.

There is a zip security pocket and an inner iPhone 6-size pocket. They are cooler than cropped pants in hot weather and you can wear leggings or knee socks and silk short johns in cold weather. They easily dry overnight when washed. I once had a glass of red wine spilled in my lap in Sicily-no stain and just mopped it up with napkins and I didn’t even have to wash it! When I wear a black 'bum' bag / crossbody bag with the built in belt loop, I use the bag's removable trap as my belt. Just adjust it to my waist size and thread it through the back loop. Thanks for your tips. I had a Delta agent tell me that my CPAP counted as a personal item, but that she would "allow" me to go to security with it. I did not argue and thanked her. I had already read on the TSA website that it was medical and not personal item and I also asked myTSA (as you suggested) that verified it. I had no problem with TSA at all. I wish all were on the same page!

    My number 1 pet peeve when traveling is seeing other women in the airport with their carry-on bag, a "personal item" AND a ginormous tote (usually their Louis Vuitton Neverfull). Then when you get on the plane they put both bags in the overhead bin and keep the tote with them. And the flight attendants never say anything. And then there's never enough room for people who board after them to put their bags in the overhead space and they end up having to check them. And I see men all the time who put their backpack (personal item) in the overhead bins even though there are a million announcements to put them under the seat. Again, nobody says anything to them. And later people who board are screwed out of space.

      It CAN be done. I travel 'heavy'. But I practiced and purged and purged some more until I could fit my wallet, my beauty aids, and tech gear in a medium size zip pouch. Fyi, my beauty aids are minimal: Chapstick, lipstick, lotion and SPF in summer. Took years of experimenting with different wallets, purses, bags and pouches, but I finally got it! Pouch is: 9" x 6" x 2" with a clear plastic front and opaque nylon back. I found it in a lot of makeup pouches for sale on eBay years ago...contents: phone, camera, mini zippered wallet with card holder, DIY purse insert/caddy with 1 Chapstick, 1 lipstick, 1 travel lotion, compact mirror, satin travel tissue envelope with tissue AND biz cards, small nylon pouch (for Ricola, travel size eye drops, and 1 tea packet). In summer, I add sunglasses in slim pouch, SPF travel packets and 'Bite' Stick.

    I live in the UK & fly a lot in Europe. I've often carried a small handbag over my arm & then put my winter coat over it so it hides the bag. In Europe it's also allowed to carry an airport shopping bag onto the plane in addition to your luggage so I've emptied my bag out, put it in the bottom of my shopping carrier bag (make sure you get one when you shop at the airport), put my handbag contents in then any shopping on top.

    4:21 Hi Laurie I love how your videos are based on your experience. There’s a similar bag to the TravelPro bag called the Underseat Pro. The difference is that the Underseat Pro
    1. dimensions fit Spirit & Frontier airline personal bag requirements
    2. can hold a 17” laptop
    3. Multifunctional (can be used more frequently as a business bag or anyone who doesn’t want to carry weight on their shoulders / back
    4. Has many compartments for organization
    5. Can fold up when not in use (space saving)

    The quilted crossbody bag you have on your list - although nice looking - would be kinda fat to have to stuff into your under seat bag. I have a couple of non quilted smaller anti-theft bags that work best for me. Travelon and Pacsafe carry bags with non-slash straps and rfid protection in several sizes. When I use one of my small crossbody bags for a flight, I pack a larger (fabric) tour bag to use while sightseeing.

    One thing that so many videos like this don't mention: get a compression bag. It's a massive 2x3' ziploc style bag. Stuff your shirts inside and then roll up one end. It forces out all the air and you have a LOT more space to put in your bag. I have used one for years and it has been a life saver. I have so far never found a hotel without a working iron so wrinkles aren't much of a concern for me.
