    The reason that one electrode has to be aluminum is that this device creates an oxidation-reduction reaction, sort of like a battery running in reverse.
    When an iron electrode in water is given a positive charge of at or above the oxidation potential(at least .44 volts), it will split into Fe2+ ions and electrons. The electrons travel up the power wire and the iron ions go into the water, producing the red color.
    If both electrodes were iron, then the reaction would run in reverse at the negative electrode, and the iron ions would turn back in to solid iron, and there would be no red color. However, aluminum is much harder to oxidize, water actually oxidizes before it does, so the aluminum electrode splits water into negative ions and hydrogen gas, making the bubbles.

    • @zherron42
      @zherron42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Furthermore, the Fe2+ ions are oxidized at the anode to Fe3+. With the oxygen ions floating around, that forms iron(III) oxide, or red rust, which is responsible for the crusty floaties and appetizing mud color the solution develops. That's why the aluminum and iron electrodes have different threads; if you got the polarity reversed, you'd end up removing any rust on the iron rods instead of creating lots and lots of new rust.

It is like the different between getting shot with an automatic rifle verses a semi-automatic one. Yeah, both can have the same power and both will kill you, but the killing is at least slightly delayed with the semi-automatic (AC) given the breaks in firing just as how AC is referenced to a neutral point (often 0V). Also, AC requires a DC signal to stay stable. Kill the DC and you have just pushed the current over. DC? Shit is going to keep going until the original current source is killed...or you are. Guess which will happen faster?

      even reverse osmosis keeps the minerals.... kills everything else though...

  • @SarahWattCA
    @SarahWattCA 8 ปีที่แล้ว +82

    Okay, so digging back into my corrosion course I think I know why they used two different metals. The device involves galvanic corrosion because it has two different metals in a medium with charge carriers (dissolved stuff like salts, etc..) In galvanic corrosion, one metal remains intact at the expense of the other and it will happen on its own over time which is why you want to be careful about building things with different metals in contact if they'll be in a wet environment. You can also apply electric current in one polarity to speed it up, or you can apply the opposite polarity to impede the corrosion (or reverse it, which is why you'd normally use something that can't corrode as the other electrode in such a case).
    Now normally it's the aluminum that will corrode while protecting the steel, but a high potential in the other direction may reverse that. They could have used gold instead of aluminum but that might have been too expensive and too visually-obvious about what was going on, so they picked metals that looked roughly the same. And in making the iron corrode very rapidly, it makes a cloud of insoluble iron oxide which gives the illusion that all sorts of gross stuff was just revealed to be lurking in your water. Distilled water with few charge carriers wouldn't undergo this anywhere near as rapidly, and would look much better in a side-by-side test.

      +Sarah Watt (NuclearSarah) This is basically how Electro-Plating works.
      Usually steel, copper, zinc, palladium and in some circumstances, gold and silver are used in electroplating.

    • @SarahWattCA
      @SarahWattCA 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never studied electroplating, but there are all sorts of things that work off of similar physics. Discharging and recharging batteries is very similar to galvanic corrosion, and the reaction used in thermite can be predicted using the same data that predicts the direction of galvanic reactions.

      Mentorcase It's the principle I was getting at.
      The voltage doesn't really matter, it can work at 240V, as long as it is DC, which this device is. Seeing as it is going through a bridge rectifier.

    • @professordey
      @professordey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sarah Watt (NuclearSarah) I thought as much regarding the iron-oxide particles, though I've never formally studied such things, seemed off to me then it clicked that electrolysis generates oxygen, which could bind with the iron from the steel that would come away into the water. Yay science!

Attempts to light a cigarette but ignites their hand from the hydrogen released by electrolytic reaction. Tries to put it out with the glass of water only to get burned from heat dissipated in the water from the electric current passing through it. Goes to hospital to find they have developed tetnitus from heavy iron oxide exposure on the wound.

    So what is your conclusion?
    It electromagnetically charges the water, sure. But that is completely beyond the point of why these are being used.
    charging the water is the only way to make the components within the water, come together and become visual.
    When charging distilled water, there is no occurrence of sludgy minerals.
    So basically this device just reveals what your minerals look like inside of non distilled water?
    The question missed here, is; Does normal water naturally contain these sludgy minerals revealed by electromagnetic charge?
    Or is the sludgyness artificially apparent due to the insertion of prongs?
    Its not a scam, if the water already contains these minerals, and the prongs just visualize them.
    It IS a scam, if the water does not contain minerals that turn sludgy when charged electrically.
    my bet is that, the water already contains unnecessary minerals, and is filtered with chlorine chloride & fluoride in order to make this appear visually pleasing.

  • @cidshroom
    @cidshroom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    The steel and aluminum electrodes were probably to cause galvanic corrosion, which I believe is what was discoloring the water.
    The recently built "Littoral Combat Ship" Independence in the US Navy embarrassingly suffered from this problem as well, because of the aluminum hull being in contact with the stainless steel propulsion system via the saltwater, which caused "aggressive corrosion".
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion#US_Navy_Littoral_Combat_Ship_Independence
    They ended up temporarily hanging a chunk of Zinc over the side of the ship while it was in harbour to prevent the corrosion to the ship, and instead corroding the Zinc, which is called a "sacrifical anode" or "cathodic protection", until they can install an onboard system. Which is available on tiny fishing boats, so this was a Navy level mistake.
    Here's the wiki article
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_anode
    and another similar one on protection systems
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathodic_protection
    So BigClive, I propose you get a sacrificial anode, charge it opposite to the aluminum cathode, and see if you can't stop that water turning yellow.
    We'll show them yet who has the cleanest damn water!

    Because the negative is alum, the iron particles wont stick too well to it. The freed up iron particles just become oxidized from the hydrogen loss reaction at the nucleation site. It maximizes rust production. The product doesn't work in the distilled water because distilled water lacks enough ions to conduct current.

    The reason they used different electrodes, is because they react together more to likely increase the dirtying effect in the water.
    As far as impurities in water, no biologist is ever going to tell you that humans and animals have to drink distilled water, in fact drinking water that has dissolved minerals in it is actually more beneficial often for the human or animal. Meaning things like river, dam, or underground water tend to be the best.
    As far as water filters for tap water, it's a waste of money. What you want to do is buy a 400-600 litre water tank, it catches rainwater, this is then a perfect source for drinking water. This is what we do in Australia, apparently in America they don't allow people to do it, but in England I am unsure if you are allowed to do it, but England has a lot of rain and it would be easy to do it there.
    Then you just use your tap water for showering, washing dishes, washing clothes etc. Indeed there is a taste difference, once you have drunk tap or spring water for at least a few days, you will then be able to tell how nasty tap water tastes, tap water has an intense chlorine taste. But if you regularly drink tap water you may not notice it, for the same reason that people can sit in a stinking room and not notice it, but a person walking in can notice it easily.
    Not saying tap water is unhealthy to drink BTW, but they do add chlorine to it, and other stuff. The sterility and safety of the water is a bit more important than exactly how healthy it is for you, from the perception of the town water supply. Certainly I would never suggest drinking water out of a dam directly, lol.

      @luttekikker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe yes, but I noticed different colours on several tests I did do with my device (just for giggles). Cold tap water, hot tap water, boiled water and when I find distilled water I will test that as well (wonder if the water gets coloured....if it does, the electrodes have some molecules emitted into the water right?).

    • @srowley85
      @srowley85 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The chemistry is quite simple. The gas bubbles at the negative (aluminum) electrode are hydrogen from the electrolysis of water. The brown is oxidized iron (iron(III) ions to be precise) from the positive electrode. If you look at the iron electrodes in the video, you can see some minor pitting on their surface. The current builds as more ions form in the water. Since distilled water doesn’t have much in the way of ions in it in the first place, you won’t see the same effect with it. Quackery is an excellent description. A note: as more current is passed, the more alkaline the resulting solution will be.

    • @thomasneal9291
      @thomasneal9291 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nope. the brown color is from the production of aluminum hydroxide from the aluminum anode. that's why they use an aluminum one to begin with, exactly to ALWAYS produce the same amount of brown color to the water, regardless of water quality.

      @@thomasneal9291 so how come distilled water stays clear?

    • @caylus3395
      @caylus3395 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coinop7278 distilled water isn't really conductive, in comparison to water with a few ions in it.
      Because it's not that conductive, there's not much charge flowing and that's why the metal rods aren't visibly breaking down.
      If you'd leave the rods for longer in there, the rods break down initially slowly, then because they release ions into the distilled water the conductivity increases, making the breakdown of the rods quicker, making the water more conductive etc.
      So there's simply a delayed reaction, your distilled water would look the exact same if you leave it in there for long enough.

    My scientific knowledge is somewhat dubious, but I think the reason they use alluminium for the cathode (-) is so the gunk coming from the steel anode (+), probably mainly iron for conductivity and nickel for added yellowing (so DEFFINATELY DONT DRINK IT as it would be HIGHLY TOXIC), doesn't get plated on to the cathode. Thus both electrodes remain shiny and 'clean' while the water gets murky.

      +SGM 26 It depends on the minerals present in the water. Like iron, sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium. The current breaks water molecules down to its basic components, hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen then combines with the impurities and some of the electrodes metal, other chemical reactions can occur, mostly it's rust because of the presence of oxygen and iron which causes a redox reaction between the elements.

      as others have said it should be mostly iron, but will depend on the exact composition of your local water what else it will throw off.
      The real joke is that the reason the positive is made of iron is that the electric charge is actually stripping iron ions off the rod and some atoms will be pulled into the aluminium rod likely creating reactions that both coat the rod and leave behind molecules that look awful.
      the idea that this shows water purity is hilarious. as it's actively adding metal and causing reactions that wouldn't happen without the electricity.
      OK some stuff is already in your water, but hydrogen and oxygen make water, fecking dangerous on their own, inert and useful together.
      I use this technique at 12v 2 amps to etch circuit boards.
      if you add salt into the water at enough quantity at allows the copper to get pulled off the board (positive charge) and it ultimately plates what ever random piece of metal you connect to negative in the water. I think jewelers use the same technique to plate things. like in ferric chloride your etch resist keeps the bits you want safe.
      i used a crocodile clip for the positive link to the PCB once, half hour later there was no crocodile clip :p just a lonely spring and an unfinished PCB lol. I solder a load on now and cover in nail polish.

    This is just similar to the colloidal silver makers Clive - the silver rods are hung in distilled water from both the positive and negative poles and the particles of silver dissolve into the water. The same will be happening here only it will be aluminium and steel particles which would be a totally bad for your health combination if you were to ingest them unlike the silver which is very good for your health and for use as an antibiotic.

    The color is from ferric (iron) ions. That's why one of the electrodes is steel - it releases iron under the applied voltage, making sure that the water turns out to be "impure" and "needs" to be filtered.
    Distilled or de-ioniazed water, used in the other glass, won't conduct electricity, so the steel won't corrode and no color will be generated.

Even showed him maths to prove that even if cycle was near 100% efficient (and it would never approach that), you'd still end up with a dead battery and egg on your face. I don't know how that resistor (in series with the LED) would actually cope either. Mains in (240V) - voltage drop over LED (2-3V) = voltage drop over resistor (237V?)
    Using V=IR, or I = V/R, that gives a current of 1.58mA
    P=IV, so 1.5mA multiplied by 237 Volts = approx 0.375W, or 375mW. That looks to be a 1/4W (250mW) resistor...

    Perhaps using a low quality filter system does not mean water would be 100% filtered my friend. I used this same identical device (with English label not Chinese like yours) to test several times on all different kind of bottled waters. Some came out almost same dark yellow color with traces of copper, iron, metal, etc... Other would be dark green and dark brown. In general, if my tester was a scam (some other counterfeits perhaps) all water from all bottle would come out with the same yellow color like your demonstration.
    The result is only one brand LAMAQUA remained pure, clear freshly clean and Aquafina got a little faded yellow color. La Vie and the rest... tell me about it. Man, the look from the result of these glasses of water from these bottled water brands alone already killed my desire to consume.

    I used to sell home water softening and purification systems door to door back in 2008. I remember having one of these things in my kit.
    The device would be used on plain tap water to neutralise the chlorine in the water and show the homeowner what was really in the water. Then we would hook up the 2 stage water purifyer demo unit which was a smaller version of the in home 2 stage unit.
    We sold a full 5 stage water purification system. The first 2 stages would soften the water and remove quite alot of the total dissolved solids in the water stages 3, 4, and 5 would perform reverse osmosis on the water at a unit housed under the kitchen sink and then that would become the households "drinking water". We also had a "TDS" meter which woud tell us how many parts per million of total dissolved solids were in the water. The electric rod unit would be used to make them visible.. Or at least that is what i was told by my managing company. This same tech is used in the "inonizing" foot bath in many pedicure salons to "remove toxins from the body" truth be told they are just running a low current thru the water and neutralising the purification processes that the water goes thru at the municipal water purifying plant.
    I did accidentally break one of these units once by shorting it out when i put it into a cup that was to short snd msde contsct with the kitchen sink. It sparked and triggered the circuit breaker in the home. Also left the sink scarred by an arc spotweld.
    All in all and interesting and fun gizmo. But from what i was told. I thought i was showing people the truth about the water in their homes. I was never aware of any snake oil schenanigans.
    Also that water filter you used was a charcoal filter wasnt it... Not a 2 stage salt ion exchange water softening filter or reverse osmosis. With reverse osmosis water you get no reaction with the device. With 2 stage salt ion exchange water softening you get a drastically reduced reaction.
    And now that i have watched the whole video with the circuit breakdown. (I dont know why it didnt hit me when i had the thing in my hand) the "yuck" in the water is actually generated by the rapid oxidation of the steel rod due to the electrical current and the different ways the two metals act in water when electrified. But ther eis one thing missing from your test that i got here in the dallss fort worth area of texas: i always got a green slimy almost algae like substance that also formed in the water when the unit was used. I kinda hsve to wonder why and what it was.

    This is a very old video, but, my bet is that the reason for the electrodes being different metals? Electrochemistry. They're not content with leaving anything to chance; the electrodes _themselves_ have some kind of reaction that puts all that, as you say, 'yuck' in the water, and that reaction wouldn't happen if one of the glasses was, as you say, filled with distilled water masquerading as filtered.
    What was happening in those glasses reminded me very much of watching NurdRage. This is a scam on so, so, so many levels.

A good test for testing your drinking water is, and I highly recommend we all do this, buy glass bottles with a largish screw on lids, and fill a bottle with cold water from you kitchen tap and fill another with water that has passed through your filter. Let the bottles stand up to 6 months and meanwhile drink bottled water from the supermarket. My glass bottles show a yellow sludge in the bottom of the glass bottles. So, I found out my water filter is dead within a year and the yellow sludge is insoluble substances in my tap drinking water. Deadly.
