Wow the photo of that car balanced on the cliff was shocking!
What a horrifying and wicked act of violence on an innocent family. It sounds as if the pregnancy might have been the catalyst that enraged Elmer to murder his family although evidence showed he had made preparations beforehand, (altering the car's interior and changing their Wills). Unbelievable he got away with this heinous crime. All for nothing in the end. How utterly devastating..

"In July 2010, Victorian Police announced that they were, in conjunction with the FBI, attempting to identify a man, via facial recognition technology, who died in 2005 in San Angelo, Texas, United States, that they believed to be Crawford. The man had no fingerprints and carried multiple identity documents. It was announced on 27 August 2010 that comparison of DNA from a Crawford blood relative ruled out any connection to the body in Texas."

Yes, they could exhume one of his children, extract the DNA then do a genetic genealogy search. Chances are he fled to NZ (you didn't need a passport to travel between Australia and New Zealand in those days) and started a new family. His children's DNA would connect to any children he may have had on the run.

Family in a 3 month period
Some people theorized that these men thought if the family were all murdered they would still go to heaven. Most of the time these men run away trying to set up a new life some where else. I think it is horrible. Christian Longo is in the Oregon State Penitentiary. It is strange. Many incarcerated women write to him. In prison women can earn small amounts of money working at the prison. There are many documented cases of these women sending their hard earned money to him. Christian Longo beat her s wife and 3 small children to death. He then stuffed their bodies in to suit cases and sunk the suit cases into a bay along the Oregon Coast. Many Oregonian's were effected by this horrible crime.

In the U.S., death penalty cases are much more expensive than other cases because they often involve a team of public defenders working on a case for a long period of time, and death sentences are usually appealed multiple times. Death penalty inmates often stay in prison for a a couple of decades before the death sentence is carried out. A 2004 study by the Tennessee state comptroller's office found that death penalty cases cost the state 50% more than life in prison cases. A 2016 study by Susquehanna University showed that death penalty inmates cost on average $1.12 million more than other inmates.
The death penalty does not deter crime. If it did, crime would have been eradicated millennia ago.
With improved DNA testing, 10% of death row inmates have been exonerated. Tragically, some have been exonerated posthumously. Putting an innocent person to death is a far greater tragedy than sentencing a guilty person to life.
Be glad you don't have the death penalty in Australia.

@@fulanichild31381: we should change the appeals process to expedite and limit to one. 2: with DNA and surveillance of many different types, it’s incredibly less likely that someone can be wrongfully sentences to death penalty than before.3: it isn’t to deter. Criminals believe they can get away with things so there already isn’t much deterrence. It’s simply to take out the trash. 4: This American wants to bring back the death penalty even more so.

Just came here to say something that hopefully nobody I know will ever see. My job is draining all the joy from my life. I feel like I should be better than I am. I wish I were different. I wish they loved me. I wish I didn't feel so fucking terrible all the time.

To the person who said if someone is so unhappy why don't you just do a themselves I absolutely agree with you it's a bit like the case in America where the man was a banker and he lost his job so he murdered his whole entire family and went off and started a new life and he actually got another job in the banking sector and he did actually get caught by the way in the 80s or 90s and got put in prison for life where he died

Can't believe there's comments here about being Australian and yet not ever heard of these murders. It's one of our most well known cases and wss huge when it happened. and often bought up in the media over the years.
I can only assume these commenters have no interest in Australian true crime.
Elmer was a migrant from Ireland. It was suspected he returned to Ireland.
