Great video. Rusty’s record at Bristol was great, but it could’ve been legendary if he’d just had some overall better luck.
1990(N): Had the car to beat but Ernie Irvan beat him out of the pits at the end and held on to win.
1993(N): Dominated the race even though he fought power steering and excessive heat problems. I’ve heard it was fatigue and that the brake pedal went to the floor for why Mark was able to pass him late. Regardless, should’ve won the race.
1994(D): Rusty and Geoff Bodine were the class of the field. Rusty was leading when a RF tire went down and cost him the day.
1996(D) Battled with Jeff Gordon all day but was leading when the last pit stops took place. Jeff took 2 tires and beat Rusty out of the pits when rain hit and NASCAR called the race.
1997(D): Bumped out of the way by Gordon after dominating the race.
1998(D): Dominated the race and was leading when the motor let go.
2002(N): Didn’t dominate but was leading late and got bumped out of the way by Jeff Gordon again.
2004(D): Strong run all day but came out of the pits second on the last round of stops. Car threw the power steering belt and Rusty couldn’t take the car deep enough in the corner to pass Kurt Busch.
2005(D): Dominated and led the most laps but had a rear tire go down and got mired laps down. Was later wiped out in the “big one” going into Turn 3.
2005(N): Had a chance to win late but went real conservative with pit strategy so they could make the Chase that season.
His performance at Bristol was unbelievable and he defeated the track’s winningest driver, Darrell Waltrip, both times they raced head to head for the win.

Yep. I wasn't ever a fan of Gordon but after the 2002 bump I could never bring myself to like Gordon. Even to this day.
