  • Qantas Airbus A380 on its maiden flight to Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport from Sydney, Australia 9/29/14 . At a length of 238 ft, a wingspan of 261 ft, and a tail height of 80 ft the double-deck, four-engine plane is the world's largest passenger plane. DFW redesigned the terminal area with more tarmac space (to accommodate the wingspan) and two additional jetbridges (gate D15, D16 and D16X). Sydney to DFW flight time is 15hr 35min. From DFW to Sydney flight time is 16hr 55min (longer due to headwinds).

    When these Quantas long distance flights were a daily thing, I’d see the massive thing on its departure from DFW - I’d be out each night, around 10pm cst, with my German shepherds for our nightly run on our golf course and this massive bird would come up over grapevine lake, from DFW airport (about 10 miles away), banking westward as it climbs up into the night sky.... very cool sight

    Yeh my wife and I flew on this one out of Sydney, Australia back in 2018 all I can say really is it was a great flight and very comfortable and that's in economy, we've flown on lots of long haul flights and some are quite noisy, but when you're actually on the A380 you can hardly hear a sound they are so quiet, the only downside for us was the flight took nearly 16 hours, we both love flying but that was a bit too long and also I'm continually amazed at how such a large machine can take off carrying all that weight, it speaks volumes for the people who design this awesome aircraft.

    I live in Dallas and Qantas QF7/QF8 is a welcome guest at DFW. It's currently our only A380 visitor since Emirates scaled back to a 777 for EK221/EK222.
    Interestingly, the A380 only ever lands and departs on the west side of DFW airport. Despite (International) terminal D being on the west side, this may have something to do with weight limits on the taxi bridges across International Parkway.

    Yeh as an aside to a comment I made earlier, when were departing for Australia were amazed how large an airport Dallas Forth Worth is, from actually moving to taking off I think it took something like 20 plus minutes to line up on our departure runway, I thought London Heathrow was big but this is one large airport.

    • @joestreetman
      @joestreetman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DFW is the only airport in the world with 7 operational runways. So depending on which gate you departed from and the runway you took off from...your estimate of 20 plus minutes is on the mark.
      There is common saying that the DFW airport is larger than the island of Manhattan. This is, in fact, true: Manhattan is 22.82 square miles. DFW is 27 square miles.

    The wings for the A380 were made in a factory in NE Wales called Broughton in the UK and I was lucky enough to see these massive wings moved from the factory to the River Dee where they were floated by barge to a port to be transported to France to be attached to the fuselage.

      ***** Had a nice long flight on QF7 A380. DFW customs experience was however disappointing. Should of only taken 15mins - 30mins to process out of customs. The ESTA scanner (or whatever they're called) machines weren't reading fingerprints properly probably because of so many dirty hands going on them. Anyway, those officers directing, should at least have a a cloth and spray to wipe the glass of the scanners - such an easy job. However, this caused alot of people to be directed to stand in a big que. And wait a further 1hr or so. Not good. I even told customs officer that I had a connecting flight, that I was going to miss it of which he replied Ït's not our problem". Some help he was - no consideration. At least wipe those scanner machines and people will be processed faster. Anyway, after been cleared through customs manually, I happen to pass the conveyor with all the luggage and I spotted my luggage which shouldn't of been on there but transferred automatically to my connecting flight to NYC. It's a lucky I spotted it otherwise I would of lost my luggage. Overall, DFW airport is very nice. Just the processing which is disappointing.

    • @Spikejou
      @Spikejou 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wise Monks This is many months later now I know, but for someone else reading...I am pretty sure you always have to collect your luggage at the first port of entrance at any country so you can take it through customs, and then take it to the transfer desk for the connecting flight.
