- “The Europeans can outgun the Russians because there are twice as many of them.”
Membership to the European Union would be the turning point in Ukrain’es fight against Putin, says journalist and author Peter Apps.

Ah, no! The EU has a population of 450 Million people! Russia is a dwarf. An economy roughly the size of Spain.

If Russia will fight with Europe then Europe will face combined forces of Russia North Korea and central Asia with industrial help from china.

@theconqueringram5295 NATO has already donated all its "game changer" weaponry. It's all lying as scrap in the steppes or has been trailed back to Moscow for display!
I wish Putin would have chose democracy and westernization over dictatorship and oligarchy.
Yes, but he's evil!
He did try to join NATO years ago.
They see the rampant depravity and decay in the West and say, no thankyou.
For the large majority of his time he did chose democracy and westernisation, eventually he chose otherwise
@@ytzpilot im not an expert at all , you may know a lot more ..but i think the Dmitry Medvedev thing was a ruse.... ..in any case look how low the great country of russia has fallen.... friends with north korea and iran... how sad.....
At this point putin would do well to withdraw all forces and reform his mindset. This isn’t going to end well for anybody east or west
The POTUS does not have the power alone to withdraw from NATO, such a move would require congressional approval.
Correct. But if an American president would just ignore any call for help, congress will have a hard time to force his hand.
True, but as Commander-in-Chief he could simply ignore any NATO pleas for military aid should they come.
Have you seen the Repugs in Congress?
And do not forget that may be the rule at the moment but Trump is not given to obeying rules or the law and would probably change them to suit whatever mood he was in anyway. Remember "Dictator in Day 1"!!! As though anyone really believes it would ONLY be Day 1!
Deployment of troops, what units, what numbers, where and when is the Presidents decision. So the US president could respond with a few AWACS, some satellite images, and some equipment and still be consistent with NATO obligations equal to many European nations.
Part of the agreement to get Ukraine to agree to give up their Nuclear Missiles under the 1994 Budapest Agreement was that Nato would help to protect them in the future, now they are being let down once again like the first time putin invaded Ukraine and took over Crimea. Thousands of lives and Billions of pounds could have been saved...Remember putin is watching all this...God Bless Ukraine from the UK.
Biden and the Democrats are the only ones stopping Ukraine winning.
Ukraine didn't have any nuclear weapons, they had physical control of a large Soviet stockpile of weapons but no way to make them go flash.
It was Russia, USA and UK who were signatories not NATO.

Despite the underestimate of the EU population, a very interesting and grown-up assessment of the current state of play regarding the multi-fronted conflicts we now face. Very uncertain times ahead for sure.
Very valuable informatio🙏 thank you for sharing
People criticizing this guy - apart from underestimating the population of the EU (just a crude throwaway figure), what exactly did he say that was incorrect?
The EU's population isn't 300 million. It's about 450 million.
Yep, plus the UK's 67 million. But they're not all of fighting age, same for Russia.
I can't see that Trump would leave NATO. Not if it meets its commitments. That was his whole point, the US was having to pay too much to protect members not meeting their obligations. And it was a very fair point as far as I can see. And guess what he was right and now you see EU countries saying they have to play catch up and increasing their spending. If the club says you are meant to pay x to be in it then you should pay x, and it's a bit rich to blame Trump and use it against him when it was the others not meeting commitments.
The USA allocates less than 1% of its GDP towards NATO, less than any other member. As usual, Trump just lies about everything. The rest of the US defense spending is for American bases in the Middle East, Asia etc.
This article is scary when thinking of the future ,where will the steel production come from to build the weapons to defend ourselves, they've all been dismantled in the cause of NETT ZERO
No . Due to Brexit .
@@michaelrowsell1160 What are you talking about? These things happened long before Brexit.
The most sensible post on the thread so far. The is almost zero awareness in the west of just how deindustrialised we've become and how atrophied our armed forces now are.
What has been dismantled can be reassembled should the country need to switch to a war economy.
The population of the EU is 450 million not 300 million.

The EU has a population of 450 million. More than 3 times that of Russia. Ukraine has close to 40 million...

Because all the money goes into the wrong pockets! Luckily!

"EU has 300 million." This man reveals himself for an idiot in the first 10 seconds.
Times Radio, where do you find these jokesters?
I think his comments and analysis were of high quality. When the only (apparent) error in a long talk on a complicated matter is presenting one wrong population number (that's not even off by an order of magnitude, or anything like that), calling him an idiot (meaning lacking intellect) makes no sense. Such error can be dismissed as a simple slip. Are you sure you don't have an agenda here?
Welcome to the Comedy Club !
I don't understand this fretting over 2% vs. 3% vs. whatever. I heard somewhere that the EU economy is 40x the size of the Russian economy. You guys should be able to outspend them with one hand tied behind your back - it shouldn't even be a contest. What's the deal there?
Regarding the US, I certainly understand you hoping the US stays involved, and honestly I do too. I don't think it's wise long term for us to try to turn out backs on foreign goings on. But given the economic advantage you Europeans have over Russia, it shouldn't matter - you should be able to handle them with or without us, and "with us" would just be a bonus perk.
I want to see the US continue to oppose Russian aggression, but honestly given simple geographic facts I see them as more Europe's responsibility than America's. Ideally we all do it together, but you guys are the first ones they'll run over if they bust out of their bounds.
I have a question on Ukraine.
Suppose, that they become a member of the EU and the NATO.
What shall we do, if they are getting pro-ruZZki again? ( it seems 2 B difficult 2 believe, but Hungary has become pro ruzzki, after the 1956 revolution, as well.)
The UK couldn't retake the Falkland islands today and will never be able to stand up to a major power at any time in the future no matter how distant. Without the resources of Empire The UK needs to get used to the fact that no one cares what London thinks or says. The UK needs to invest in the economy and improve the quality of life for its own population and learn to negotiate and compromise diplomatically. The UK doesn't have a stick only a carrot.
We don't have to retake them. We already have them. Argentina has been turned, they are no threat what so ever. The UK needs to kick out all the illegal immigrants and the economy would sort its self out.
Charity begins at home would help.
Yeah that’s nonsense
True
The UK is importing its enemies as fast as it can so in all likelihood their war will be on its own territory.
Wrong, he is predictable if you listen.
Without being mean, how many in the EU are like you versus in Russia?
We have a demographic crisis, worse than Russia's, but we also support the disabled more than the Russians, upsettingly, less abled people such as you would be given the Spartan treatment.
The EU also has a far larger immigrant population. While Romanians and Polish may be willing to give their all at the workplace, are they fair game for conscription? Would they be conscripted to their native country or the country they've migrated to?
Thats internal migration, France has long struggled with 'the Muslim question' within their own borders. Would they really side with France against Muslim Chechens?
It's very silly to just look at population numbers and think that wins wars. Russia pressed their prison population into war, would we do that? Could we do that?
- "France has long struggled with 'the Muslim question' within their own borders. Would they really side with France against Muslim Chechens? It's very silly to just look at population numbers and think that wins wars. "
Paraphrasing you, it's very silly to expect the interviewee to go in to such detail on a short interview. Had he gone to same level of detail in regard to every aspect that influences the outcome of an imagined future war between Russia and the EU, full day wouldn't have been enough for the interview. He wasn't even asked to go into detail, but to give his general assessment about the matter. The point you raise is interesting and probably to some degree relevant, but not something that should be mentioned in every comment and analysis about the general matter.
@@adoatero5129 he simplified it to total population, that's crazy if he ignores the disparity in population demographics.
If he'd focussed on tech and industrial power, I'd have agreed with you, since EU industry isn't as 'hard' dominant as Russia, but could adapt relatively quickly if required. As has been observed, you can defeat mass with precision. Claiming we have greater mass just because there are that many warm bodies on the continent is asinine.
NATO must offer Ukraine immediate membership. Couple that with an immediate call for a ceasefire and the opening of negotiations. That guarantees a free Ukraine and spares them a demographic apocalypse. It presents Putin with a face saving off ramp to end the war. Moreover, his BRIC associates will be on board with such an initiative that ends the fighting. Even if left with a frozen conflict (i.e. Korean War Armistice of 1953) that would be better than an escalating hot war.

Your first question summed up the problem very nicely. You spent 3 and a half years talking about Trump instead of focusing on NATO shortcomings in terms of will and strategy. The fact is most European leaders are hoping Trump wins so they can stop supporting Ukraine and go back to business as usual.
Not a very good guest. I couldn't hardly stand to listen to this guy.
Be more detailed.
- I think population calculation, in the time of DRONES & 'AI', is not that relevant.

@@AnotherPointOfView944 I'd like some realism and somewhat balanced analysis about the challenges Ukraine is facing. Where they are doing well and where they aren't. Not pro-Russian, but informative.
Oh no, "the west", compared to what... South Korea and Japan? They are by and large the only eastern places that have a cultural impact globally.
- "my lord this channel is one big Western propaganda channel"
Could you be more specific? Was there something false or out of proportion in what was said in the interview? Your reaction is so emotional and strong ("my lord", "one big propaganda channel") that you should be able to present facts and proper reasoning to back the reaction up (unless it was acted).
@@adoatero5129 I'm talking about the channel in general. After watching a dozen or more videos during 2022 (and some since then of course) I realized the messages were:
1) Russia is struggling at x, y, or z and has massive losses.
2) Ukraine has had a bit of success here or there (no mention of their losses)
3) If only Europe/U.S. would give more weaponry or approve the use of ____ then Ukraine could more easily damage Russia.
General Ben Hodges has been the worst. I gravitated to his optimism about Russia's inevitable loss of Crimea, etc. but then realized he is just blowing smoke.
I don't think most people in western Europe would refuse to join the armed forces. Even if conscription was introduced there would be social chaos as 90 percent would not comply. In Russia no doubt there are those who feel the same way but they would still be able to field a larger military even with Europe's larger population. Russia will continue to inch forward regardless so Ukraine is lost. However, I doubt Russia has any desire to enter any other European countries or the capability with the exception of transnistria.
The FaZZcists can inch forward, losing a thousand men per km, but holding it is a different thing. They should have learnt that in Afghanistan from '79 onwards.
Lots of assumptions there. If the choice is between draft and prison, people would choose the draft.
