I didn't even know that there was a deleted part of the opening where Arthur is drowning; I'm probably guessing that it was removed because it was a bit too graphic and scary. I think the original script would've gone something like Arthur falls off a cliff into the ocean, then a huge spider saves him from drowning on a beach or something, and Arthur runs away from the spider, forgetting that it saved his life. Also, I have to assume that these voice-over recording sessions were done in very late 1997 and/or it had to have been one of the first episodes done for season 3 since Buster and his voice actor, Daniel Brochu were part of this since the actor returned from his trip abroad in Australia.
Wow, good catch! that's weird because I remember a shot where Arthur is being sucked down a drain in a big water vortex...maybe it was a "drowning issue" so had to be removed. It's strange that they kept the shot of him falling from a building, though, as this is something kids could imitate so those kinds of things are usually not allowed today...it must have been a change by the client after the animation was finished and I had moved to another production by that point. The date on the tape is April 17, 1998.
The fall setting really sets the episode apart from the others. I love the backgrounds used. The episode overall is kinda basic compared to the others but is pretty alright in my opinion.
yeah, the background department did a nice job with the autumn backgrounds on this one...I remember the Director, Greg Bailey, was happy with how the show looked, even though the script is kind of weak.
Hello, Mr. Off Model. I would just like to know if you knew anything about the PBS Kids Vote-A-Rama event and a lost Arthur stage show. So, about the PBS Kids event, it was a marathon of three Arthur episodes voted by fans. In between the episodes, there were bumpers of the titular character, Arthur, and his friend, Buster, counting down the episodes or other stuff. Apparently, some of these bumpers are lost, as they are not easily accessible on the Internet or anywhere. Do you know if you have access to any of these bumpers. And there is a lost Arthur stage show called Arthur: A Live Adventure, that toured from 1999 to sometime in 2001. The show was sponsored by Juicy Juice. Basically, the live show was a retelling of the Season 2 episode "Arthur's Lucky Pencil", with some songs added in. According to the Arthur Wiki, sometime of 2007, there was a tour called Arthur Tricks the Tooth Fairy. I was wondering, since you've worked on Arthur for many years, if you had a video or recording of the stage shows. I understand that you may be busy, but an answer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi! I'm sorry I can't remember any bumpers for a vote-a-rama countdown being made at the animation studio, Cinar...perhaps WGBH made these using some New York ad-agency animators which they did from time to time with very weird results... But I left the series in 2001 to work on 'Sagwa' so if it was after 2001 I wouldn't have known about it, so maybe it exists. How did the audience vote on the episodes in those days? I remember something with a 'red button' scheme that WGBH was promoting in 1999 where you'd press a button on a remote to get some interactive pop up window with trivia or a lesson. I'm sorry I only vaguely remember the Arthur travelling stage play for kids around 1999 but we weren't involved with it at Cinar...although someone brought in a tape of it and we made fun of it a lot! 😅 In that era it was common to have those kinds of "Disney on Ice" type events for kids...I guess they don't do that kind of thing anymore since kids only like to watch other kids playing video games on TikTok these days. You could try asking the Director, Greg Bailey, if he can remember the voting thing. He usually likes to answer questions from fans. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. www.youtube.com/@3arwig
@offmodel Thanks! I had no idea that you left Arthur to work on Sagwa. I am familiar with Greg Bailey, though. And I remember that even the show itself would joke about him sometimes lol
Thank you so much for keeping Arthur alive with these. Im always fascinated with behind the scenes for cartoons, so im extremely happy to see more.
Hi, thank you for working on arthur, a show that i watched since i was 8 years old. I'm actually rewatching the series now I'm on season 9.
