Somebody upload this to Internet archive
Got tipped off about this channel thanks to Elwood City Limits. Not gonna lie, it sounds so weird heading the demo tapes of songs that I loved from my childhood. It’s legit impressive - thank you for playing such a huge role of my childhood (and honestly teen years too). I love how the guitar sounds in the demo for Brain’s song. Do you have any demos for any of the other Arthur songs? I almost prefer listening to the demo concepts.
Thanks! I think that's the only "demo" song I have where the music had to be "pitched" to the client for approval...for some reason the client wasn't too picky with all the other songs in the series and they usually accepted the first version of the other songs we did. I do have some "vox" versions of song without dialog that are interesting because you can hear the music better.
@@offmodel genuinely - that’s super interesting! I wonder why they were more chill with the other songs. The vox versions def have my attention - would love to hear em someday!
@@K2SonicFan ok, I will digitize the tapes and upload some vox versions soon. Regarding the guitar in the song...I think the studio musician at Cinar was named Daniel Ranallo and he did a lot of recordings for us in the Montreal area. Besides 'Arthur' he worked on a lot of other obscure cartoons that no one watched like Pig City and What's With Andy. th-cam.com/video/UQ387Tb4Llc/w-d-xo.html
@@offmodel awesome! No pressure :) you put out a lot of content that imho isn’t getting enough attention considering how many people love bts stuff - and that sounds amazing! I’m gonna have my hands full looking into this show. Never heard of it til now but the guitar work sounds like his work on Arthur.
@@K2SonicFan a lot of the voice actors on Arthur also worked on those shows...the 'Buster' voice is pretty obvious in What's With Andy. th-cam.com/video/4Qrpbjddr3c/w-d-xo.html
By any chance you have the full song or demo to Tina the Talking Tabby tune?
I'm sorry, I don't think I have anything from the xmas movie.
First, I wanna thank you for providing all of us Arthur fans with all this behind the scenes content! I’m an AUDIO guy and I’m curious what kind of audio equipment was used when recording the voiceover sessions in the late 90s (voices recorded to 1/4 tape, DAT, MiniDisc, an early version of ProTools, etc)??I do know that shows that were produced using hand-painted cels would have the voiceover audio track transferred to a 35 mm optical sound negative since it would be shot frame-by-frame at 24 fps 📽️, however, I read on your Reddit that the Arthur drawings would be scanned and colored in the computer (with only 64 colors!) so there was no need for film reels or laboratory prints 🎞️ hopefully that wasn’t too much of a technical question rant! lol I’m very excited to know what audio recording was used when you worked at CINAR. 🎛️🎚️🎚️🎚️🎚️ Thank you again. Dan “Decibel” Sandberg
Only the character's voices without the music and motion pictures
yes, the voices are recorded first and the visuals and music are added at the next stages of production. I thought people would like to hear these rare voice records, kind of like listening to a podcast.

Hi
Do you know who did the voice of the Very Mean Crossing Guard?
Yeah, that voice is great...I'm not 100% sure but it sounds like Walter Massey who did Mr. Haney's voice.
@@offmodelI could be wrong, but I’m guessing it could be Dan Hennessy who voices Braveheart Lion from the Care Bears. It sounded like him.
@@josephharrington4502 oh, yeah, you're right! he has the same gruff sound. I'll have to ask Debra Toffin, the voice director, if she remembers. Whoever it was, he had a good voice!
@@offmodel Let me know if you hear from her.
@@offmodel Doesn't Sound Like Walter Massey
*reads title of video* Wait... Script by Marc Brown? Maybe I'm weird for being surprised by this because obviously I know Brown wrote the "Arthur" books that the TV show is based on so it makes sense for the "Arthur" staff to get his input on things like the writing. I know you mentioned being a storyboard artist in reply to my last comment on the "Grandma Thora Appreciation Day" video so I get that the writing on the show may not have been your area.. Still I can't help but fixate on this one detail about the episode. I know the show had hired writers like Joe Fallon, Peter Hirsch, and Ken Scarborough but "D.W Rides Again" is an episode I haven't seen for a long time or only seen in passing so I probably didn't notice Marc's name anywhere in the end credits as a script advisor or something like that which is why it was news to me that he apparently had an influence on the show but that's so cool. It must mean they tried their best to stay true to Marc's vision of the characters since he had some sort of influence on the writing, at least it seems on "D.W Rides Again"?
Yes, you're right...I probably should have just wrote Joe Fallon's name, but Marc Brown wrote the original book on which this episode was based so I included his name for that reason. I think Marc Brown would send notes on the scripts that the writers submitted and may have suggested storylines but, as you said, I wasn't involved with the scripts other than drawing the visuals to them.
I like this episode. It's interesting to note that, while Steven Crowder and Alex Hood-the other actors who have voiced Brain-are well-known (albeit for different reasons), relatively little is known about Luke Reid. I guess it's for the better😅
yeah, Luke Reid was the kid with the least amount of professional acting skills but his voice seemed suited for Brain...Originally Brain was a very minor character so not a lot of thought was put into the choice of the voice actor....and Luke had to rhyme off a lot of science tech jargon which was tough for any voice actor.
I'm glad someone likes this episode...I thought it was one of the stranger ones when I worked on it...like, what is the message? 'Not all old men are creeps', I guess. It kind of goes against the message kids are always fed that all strangers are danger. Well, I actually had a crossing guard like this guy when I was a kid, so I could relate to the story...maybe other kids could too?
@@offmodel I'm guessing the message is somewhere along the lines of "everybody can be gullible," mainly because it starts off with Arthur mocking D.W.'s fear of monsters under her bed, only for him to believe the most unserious "threat" that even she knows is a joke.
4:27 Wizard of Oz lol
Hey have you ever heard of the TH-camr Matt neff?
yes! a couple years ago I saw one of his hilarious videos and I realized there must be some people out there that remember 'Arthur!' Matt Neff wrote a comment on the 'DW Rides Again' video recently...at least I think it was him...I'm old so I don't know what's going on most of the time.
An original "Arthur" Voice Recording Session?! I used to watch this show as a kid on PBS (WHYY in Philadelphia) and I never knew any recordings from the voice sessions existed. Subscribing right now, this is seriously a gem!
Thanks! I worked on the first 5 seasons in the 90's as a Storyboard and Layout Artist and found a box of cassette tapes in my basement from the show...I guess technically these are called "Nat Pause" recordings, not true 'voice record sessions', since all the voice actors' chatter between lines has been removed...these tapes were given out to the storyboard artists to begin drawing the visuals. :)
@offmodel Thanks for taking the time to read and answer my comment. I collect those retail “Arthur” VHS tapes (Random House/Sony Wonder) with two classic episodes per tape (then three in the Sony Wonder era, apparently) like “Arthur’s Baby”, etc, I never really paid much attention to the end credits before but next time I watch an episode I’ll see if I can identify your presence as a crew member from back then. “Nat Pause” recordings, you say? I had never heard that term before. How are they different from a voice acting session besides the banter between the cast being cut? I get the part about them being used so the storyboard artist can draw the visuals based on the lines said by the characters, if I’m understanding correctly, but it’s still interesting to discover something about “Arthur” I never knew.
@@PaperbackWriter92 I guess "Nat Pause" is a term that isn't used much anymore because I'm old :)...it was just the voice cast reading their lines through without much regard to the big paragraphs of action notes in the script...later a "Timed Edit" would be made so if there was, for example, a long fantasy sequence with no dialog in it, then there would be a long pause of 10 seconds of silence to allow for that fantasy sequence. The 'Nat Pause' version is just all dialogue with no pauses between the lines.
A big McThankies from McSpanky's
Is it Arthur Holden who does the voice in the Oliver Twist sequence?
yes, you're right, that's him! There's an ab lib line there by Holden "Oh, I should get paid by the laugh! Ha ha ha." (the inside joke is the voice actor DOES get paid by the laugh!)
@@offmodel haha, that's a great ad lib by Holden!! I love his voice acting and he was cast perfectly as Mr Ratburn, as well as the other small roles in the show :) Thanks for the response!
@@sheepletears yes, he's amazing! he will appear in a show I worked on recently called "Millie Magnificent." He played an elderly Asian man named "Mr. Lin." A very interesting performance!

Hello, Off Model. You may remember me from when I asked about the lost PBS Kids Vote-A-Rama event and the lost Arthur stage play. I haven't contacted Greg Bailey yet, as he hasn't posted anything on his TH-cam channel in about a year. Anyway, I was just watching the Arthur episode "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll", and I wanted to know the history and development behind that episode. Like, how did the people behind Arthur even get in touch with the Backstreet Boys? And why did they decide to have the Backstreet Boys in a show like Arthur of all places?
Hi, I'm not 100% sure how that came about but I think I remember hearing the Backstreet Boys contacted PBS about doing it for some reason...you'll have to ask Greg Bailey about that to confirm...if you leave a comment on Greg's TH-cam channel I'm sure he'll reply.
Hi what is your thoughts on the 2015 Bratz reboot???
I didn't see it but I heard it was weird...I guess they were trying to avoid from being seen as a Barbie clone because of the Mattel lawsuit a few years earlier.
Oh I see. Well at least Mattel went into the right direction of making Barbie Fashionistas. Which I've been collecting Barbie Fashionistas ever since I was a kid which is one of my most favorite Barbie lines!!!!!! 💖✨✨
I used to own a VHS tape of "Arthur" with this episode along with "Arthur's Cousin Catastrophe" and it's one of these home medias I am very fond of. Also, after hearing D.W. saying "Catch" then her laughing, I'm assuming that there was a deleted part where after Mr. Simple leaves, D.W. throws the cabbage at either Arthur or someone else, then something happens which triggers her laughter.
I think this is my favorite D.W. episode. While she is still "D.W.", her motivation can be understood and she reaches all her goals. "I don't care if I'm 21 and I am one giant scab, I'm going to learn to this" is a probably one of the best lines D.W. ever said which makes me wonder how the writers managed to make a manipulative and spoiled brat a good role model for kids this episode.
Amen, Brother!
I've always really liked this episode as well. It's a really good lesson on hard work and not giving up.

Thank you so much for keeping Arthur alive with these. Im always fascinated with behind the scenes for cartoons, so im extremely happy to see more.
Hi, thank you for working on arthur, a show that i watched since i was 8 years old. I'm actually rewatching the series now I'm on season 9.
I love this one XD "Without me, there's no banana!!" Thank you for sharing this. It's so cute hearing the voice actors laugh too.
Did they end up cutting the “and learned some terrible things” part of that first line? I don’t remember it being in the aired episode.
yes, I can't remember for certain but it's probably something the client changed after the storyboard or animation was finished...maybe it implies something horrible about Grandma Thora so they wanted it toned down. We would get several pages of revisions at the storyboard stage and some of these would be dialog revisions like this.
0:10 (Deleted Line Scene) Arthur: “DEEP WATER….” (FALLS Into Water LIKE in THEME SONG & GURGLES & ALMOST DROWNS) 💦💧 ☠️💀😵
Hello, Mr. Off Model. I would just like to know if you knew anything about the PBS Kids Vote-A-Rama event and a lost Arthur stage show. So, about the PBS Kids event, it was a marathon of three Arthur episodes voted by fans. In between the episodes, there were bumpers of the titular character, Arthur, and his friend, Buster, counting down the episodes or other stuff. Apparently, some of these bumpers are lost, as they are not easily accessible on the Internet or anywhere. Do you know if you have access to any of these bumpers. And there is a lost Arthur stage show called Arthur: A Live Adventure, that toured from 1999 to sometime in 2001. The show was sponsored by Juicy Juice. Basically, the live show was a retelling of the Season 2 episode "Arthur's Lucky Pencil", with some songs added in. According to the Arthur Wiki, sometime of 2007, there was a tour called Arthur Tricks the Tooth Fairy. I was wondering, since you've worked on Arthur for many years, if you had a video or recording of the stage shows. I understand that you may be busy, but an answer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi! I'm sorry I can't remember any bumpers for a vote-a-rama countdown being made at the animation studio, Cinar...perhaps WGBH made these using some New York ad-agency animators which they did from time to time with very weird results... But I left the series in 2001 to work on 'Sagwa' so if it was after 2001 I wouldn't have known about it, so maybe it exists. How did the audience vote on the episodes in those days? I remember something with a 'red button' scheme that WGBH was promoting in 1999 where you'd press a button on a remote to get some interactive pop up window with trivia or a lesson. I'm sorry I only vaguely remember the Arthur travelling stage play for kids around 1999 but we weren't involved with it at Cinar...although someone brought in a tape of it and we made fun of it a lot! 😅 In that era it was common to have those kinds of "Disney on Ice" type events for kids...I guess they don't do that kind of thing anymore since kids only like to watch other kids playing video games on TikTok these days. You could try asking the Director, Greg Bailey, if he can remember the voting thing. He usually likes to answer questions from fans. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. www.youtube.com/@3arwig
@offmodel Thanks! I had no idea that you left Arthur to work on Sagwa. I am familiar with Greg Bailey, though. And I remember that even the show itself would joke about him sometimes lol
2:13 Is that a trick question? 😂
I didn't even know that there was a deleted part of the opening where Arthur is drowning; I'm probably guessing that it was removed because it was a bit too graphic and scary. I think the original script would've gone something like Arthur falls off a cliff into the ocean, then a huge spider saves him from drowning on a beach or something, and Arthur runs away from the spider, forgetting that it saved his life. Also, I have to assume that these voice-over recording sessions were done in very late 1997 and/or it had to have been one of the first episodes done for season 3 since Buster and his voice actor, Daniel Brochu were part of this since the actor returned from his trip abroad in Australia.
Wow, good catch! that's weird because I remember a shot where Arthur is being sucked down a drain in a big water vortex...maybe it was a "drowning issue" so had to be removed. It's strange that they kept the shot of him falling from a building, though, as this is something kids could imitate so those kinds of things are usually not allowed today...it must have been a change by the client after the animation was finished and I had moved to another production by that point. The date on the tape is April 17, 1998.
The fall setting really sets the episode apart from the others. I love the backgrounds used. The episode overall is kinda basic compared to the others but is pretty alright in my opinion.
yeah, the background department did a nice job with the autumn backgrounds on this one...I remember the Director, Greg Bailey, was happy with how the show looked, even though the script is kind of weak.
Hey I don't know if you have it or not but I honestly wanna see a script read of the episode Play It Again D.W or Arthur's Spelling Trubble.
yes, those are good ones! I'm searching for them but unfortunately the tapes only have production numbers written on them not titles so it will take a bit of time to find them...my 40 year old tape player is on its last legs.
@offmodel Oh ok.
I didn't know Arthur aired on "the Spot" one time! Either I'm wrong, or it didn't.
I used a copy posted on Dailymotion that seems to be from "The Spot."
@@offmodelOh, neat.
Well, sometimes from another station.
@@tylernicholas7217 I guess once Arthur hit 65 episodes it could be sold in syndication to stations other than PBS. That was the magic number in those days for TV shows...once you hit 65 episodes you hit the cash cow of syndication and there often was no reason to make more episodes...luckily Arthur started winning Emmy awards so PBS decided to order more.
