- Let's do #fancyfinishfriday with Twisted Maxine's Back Carry! This carry (and its untwisted original) is a great one for using a long woven wrap at the car because of how it starts super off center - one tail is so short it will never touch the ground, leaving the longer tail to sit in the car while I wrap.
Here's the second SILENT episode of my new series, "Car Carriers," which will highlight baby carriers I like to use at my car door. This week we're using a base plus one grey and off white wave pattern wool woven wrap, Bijou Northern Waves. (Need more info on what a "base size" is? amywrapsbabies.com/wrap-sizes
The video opens looking at the inside of a van door as it opens and text appears on screen that reads quote Car, end quote, then the word car slides slightly to the side and other words fade in for the full title quote, Car Carriers with Amy Wraps Babies. A grey rectangle pops up with the title quote, episode two: base size wrap, end quote. I walk into frame (I'm a white woman with long dark hair) and pick up the grey and off white wrap, find the red Bijou middle marker, then move down to the tapered end of the wrap. I straighten my arm to measure from the wrap's end in my outstretched fingers to my chest, then give myself another foot or so in length (I'm measuring to get a short tail over one shoulder: long enough to hold a knot and maybe pin in between my knees, but short enough that it doesn't touch the ground while I wrap). I place the wrap over my knee, the pan the camera to my toddler in his car seat and unbuckle him. I pan the camera back to the van door opening and place my toddler on my knee, then drape the wrap over his shoulders and superman toss him up on my back. I pin the two tails of the wrap in my teeth (unseen as I'm facing away from the camera) and make a seat, then turn around and pan the camera down to the van floor to show the one short tail pinned in my knees and the much longer end of the wrap in a pile waiting to be used.
To wrap the carry I only use the long tail, starting at shoulder by giving the wrap a half twist, with the lower edge of the wrap (at the outside of my shoulder) coming over the lower edge to pin it in place. The wrap comes across my chest to under the opposite arm, then gets bunched up to go under both baby's knees. Now the tail comes across my waist as a waist belt, then gets spread over baby's back in a horizontal pass over both knees. Now the tail from under my arm will travel up my chest to meet the tail that's been hanging there the whole time, which continues to just hang there as I make the slip knot with the longer tail. I spread the passes out on my chest so that the bulk of the bunching is as low as possible and the wrap is spread well on each shoulder. My toddler and I wave goodbye to the camera.
