Balance bikes vs. training wheels for toddlers... are balance bikes better than training wheels? Do balance bikes work? HOW do balance bikes work? Which is better? Does it even matter? In our minds, there is no debate. Balance bikes are a MUCH better option than training wheels for toddlers, preschoolers, and even grade schoolers!
As parents who have tested over 100 balance bikes and taught MANY of our neighbors kids to ride a bike, let us count down the 5 REASONS WHY BALANCE BIKES ARE BETTER THAN TRAINING WHEELS.

    5. BALANCE BIKES ARE A BETTER FIT FOR SMALLER KIDS.
Balance bikes are smaller, lighter, more narrow, and just fit small children much better. As a result, you can start kids on balance bikes much younger than a 12″ bike with training wheels.
Balance bikes have a lower minimum seat height, as low as 10" off the ground. The average 12” bike (the smallest pedal bike available) has a minimum seat height of 17”!
    4. BALANCE BIKES MOVE SAFELY AND EASILY ON UNEVEN SURFACES
Riding with training wheels is a wobbly and awkward experience. A child can only go so fast and can’t execute turns very well because training wheels keep them slightly off-balance. Plastic training wheels can easily get caught on any uneven surface, training wheels pretty much limit a child to riding up and down the street.
Balance bikes ride on two inline wheels and a child can easily wander off the sidewalk, onto the grass and even down curbs! They can also tackle gravel, dirt trails, pump tracks and more.
    3. BALANCE BIKES ARE LIGHT AND EASY TO RIDE SO KIDS CAN GO FARTHER
Balance bikes are s typically at least HALF the weight of a pedal bike!
This makes balance bikes are much easier to maneuver and ride which makes it easy for kids to go farther on family bike rides.
    2. BALANCE BIKES OFFER YEARS OF FUN AND INDEPENDENT RIDING
Start Them Young: If a toddler begins exploring a balance bike early, by age 3 they are typically capable of riding their balance bikes essentially anywhere.
Gives Them Independence: Even when starting at 18 months, kids can stand over a balance bike and walk it without any help. Learning to ride a balance bike is a very natural process for kids and their first experience with a bike is independence. With training wheels, kids generally need help to get started and they also are very limited in where they can ride them.
Fun for both the child and the parent, you’ll be amazed at what your child can accomplish on a balance bike. Conversely, parents are rarely impressed with the amazing things kids can do on a bike with training wheels.
    1. BALANCE BIKE GRADUATES NEVER NEED TRAINING WHEELS
Balance bike graduates don’t need training wheels because a balance bike teaches a child to ride a bike. While many parents erroneously believe that training wheels train a child to ride a bike, the truth is that they don’t! They actually HINDER development and make the transition to two wheels much harder.
For a child that supposedly learned to ride a bike with training wheels, when those training wheels are removed, the real drama begins and training starts all over again!
But when you hand a balance bike graduate a pedal bike, the only skill your child will need to learn at this point is pedaling, which comes very naturally because they don’t have to think about everything else involved in riding a bike. They’ve already mastered everything else on their balance bike!
