Hey Seth, I want to get a bike that has a more aggressive geometry, as I currently ride an XC bike. Is there any specific model you think would be good value for money? Thanks
No quick release isn’t necessarily bad. I own a carbon Rocky Mountain that’s an 8 millimeter Allen key. I get what you meant with the bolt but for beginners you might want to get more specific. But you still have more balls then me sending on that xc bike!

When I first started getting into mountain biking seriously my first "real" mountain bike (a 2015 Trek MT220) had none of the things mentioned here besides a derailluer hanger, and even though I knew it wasn't that great of a bike I still rode the hell out of it, did lots of maintenance on it, and the only thing that needs replacing is the tubes. I even sent it off a few small drops and took it all around the city, jumping all over curbs and it's still in good condition. Even if your bike isn't so great, just get out and ride! No excuses!
My first mountain bike was one I bought from a coworker for $100. I don't remember the brand, but it was actually a pretty decent bike, and it got me around for a year after I wrecked my car. My second mountain bike was a top of the line 1993 Trek 6000 that my wife bought for me. I loved that bike and was very upset when it was stolen last year, or I would still be riding it.
I spent $400 on a new 2017 Specialized Hardrock hardtail. Has all of these qualities mentioned here and more. I've had it 2 years and have yet to have any major issues with it. Absolutely perfect beginner bike. Upgraded to a 2020 Stump Jumper ST 29er now but I can't sell the Hardrock. Hanging onto it for buddies to ride and for me to play around on. Still an awesome and very capable bike.
This is probably the best biking channel on TH-cam! Properly addressed every crucial aspect of a decent starter bike without the usual BS I'm used seeing around, most of the videos I've seen they basically say to throw away your beginner bike and buy one that costs more than a house.
hes not lying..lol i first started on a cheap bike thinking its all ill ever need. exactly 1 year later i sold my valuables including my tv, and bought a dual suspension trail bike.. no regrets.
"Your only a year away from selling all your belongings" i selled my old phone my mechanical keyboard my smart watch my old ps4 and my jbl box. I now have a 1800€ full suspension bike tho. All i need now are friends that do mountainbiking.
It definitely matters. Having a good fork is crucial if you want to ride rocky/rooty stuff for longer than a fee minutes without your forearms falling of. It is more about the rider than the bike. That is true. You wont win anything on a bad bike though.

Thanks for the concise information. Someone looking for a good bike doesn't necessarily want to drop the equivalent of rent for something good. They also don't want to get something so cheap it breaks fast. Good video! 👍
@@81eagle if it's old, those were the standards at the time, so the bike can still be good quality. He's talking about buying new now. If the bike doesn't have what he lists, it's garbage and not safe to ride anywhere but on pavement. Quality.
@Pixellight Gaming Dude, it's not for the rich, it's for the patient. I found an awesome bike used for a few bucks! It's holding up perfectly! I haven't spend much on it so far, but i'm having fun, and i'm not rich!
@Pixellight Gaming not really... most mountain bikers I know (including myself) don't have much money... but it's a good community and you can always get good deals on second hand bikes that are still in good condition :)
@Pixellight Gaming If you invest in a good bike it will last. my first bike was about 600 bucks and it lasted me over ten years. I went riding about 3 times a week so if you break it down it was less than 1 dollar a ride for me during the life of the bike (of course there were occasional parts needed and maintenance). You can also find really good used bikes as well, it seems its easier to find components on deep clearance rather than full bikes so that could be a good route for you as well! Hope you give it a shot because its a lot of fun.. maybe even try renting a bike first for a few weekends to see if you even like it?
@Pixellight Gaming Totally not true! These style bikes can be had for less than $500 in the states and closer to $200 if you are willing to buy used and shop around - that's about the price of a decent video game console. Sure you might have to save up a bit if you aren't well-off but don't buy into the industry hype about having to own the latest greatest stuff and upgrade every 2 years. That's obviously how new MTBs are marketed because they gotta sell to someone, but there's room for all types of budgets and all types of bikes. There's guys I ride with who are serious shredders and crush it on 10+ yr old hard tails. Please stop spreading lies.
This is exactly the video I think everyone needs to watch in the beginning of their process! Which is where I'm at right now. I have learned so many things and none of them were nearly as needed in the start as this. I'm about to stalk your channel and look for every other video I can find. Thx
@@rogercotman1314 it was the 26 inch GT stomper for my 10 year old. There's not the greatest comment about Dick's sporting goods putting the bike together, so I ended up ordering it and doing it myself. But the bike itself will blow you away! The colors aren't exactly what you see, so I had already read reviews. But I got him the new red one and this bike is gorgeous! The red is vibrant, but still red and not orange or pink. And all the equipment is so much better than you're going to think it's going to be. The big choice for this bike is, for his age, everyone's buying adult bikes so that they can grow into them but getting the smallest size they can. Going with this stomper GT pro in 26 inch, they actually have the pedals in a better positioning and the neck and handlebars are better for their age and size. He and I are so proud of the choice I made! And he's really enjoying it on the trails and the jumps.
@@rogercotman1314 your best bet is the schwinn axum. They have a 400$ and an identical 500$ with a dropper post. Do alot of research but for your price range that's honestly the best thing worth getting. Theres another model under that called the "boundy" it's the second best of the cheap bikes in my opinion 240$. But I wouldnt go lower then the axum. If you have time and patience check pawn shops and the used market. Then you'll most likly get alot better quality bike, if you go that route inspect the bike very well to see if anything is wrong with it and if you need to replace parts and fix it. Either route I just talked about i would take the bike apart mostly after you get it home and reassemble it correctly and to your liking👍 just to be correct and safe. I bought the 400$ schwinn axum by the way, took it up to walmart customer service and pointed out some zip ties and misc little things I knew were fixable (they didnt)..and they gave me 10% off which isnt bad on a 400$ bike so it was 360$. That said theres a huge bike shortage rn In most states and good entry level mtn bikes are hard to find, prices are high and supply down. Walmart has a 90 day return policy so I'm honestly still bike shopping lol. New and used. But this schwinn axum is not a bad bike at all for the price like I said, I just have an urge to get a better bike and might put some more $$ towards it. But if I end up keeping this one I'd still be happy and just upgrade a few parts on it.
aironeTV there are multiple versions available. This is the basic overdrive hardtail. Additionally you can opt for the 27.5 or 29er variants. The overdrive family is extensive. The top of the like ones such as the overdrive comp and pro can run you anywhere from 1k to $1600. (Full retail but no one pays that much) Make sure to find a retailer to get the best price
I bought my mountain bike about 5 years ago. It has none of the features you described that were necessary, but it's great for urban riding and some off-road trails. I love it.
Hey seth I just wanted to comment that I purchased my first mountainbike. It's a trek marlin 7 on an xl frame and I owe it to you, I started watching your videos while you were still in Florida. I started with a cheap-o walmart bike, hopping up curbs and using driveway edges as transitions for little jumps. After I folded the derailleur I got a bmxbike on the advice of a friend, and it just wasnt a good enough mode of transport for me to ride to spots like I could on a mountainbike. Thank you seth, for everything that you do!
great video, but you just glanced over the biggest factor. If there is nowhere to mount a flask holder, then you should definitely avoid buying the bike if you are serious about biking.
I purchased a hardtail cannondale catalyst 4 about two years ago. It has all of the qualities mentioned in the video. I have crashed numerous time at high speeds and it has held up wonderfully. I purchased it for around $420. Great entry level bike!
This is why I love youtube. I want to get into noob mountain biking and ran into this channel. Ohh i HAD my NOOB eye on a Wal-Martgoose and will be instead buying the diamondback thx again. 🚵
BigVic I have a 29er mongoose its pretty awsome and does the job as good as any other bike, iv upgraded tires put a chain guard on it and sticker blasted the frame for extra speed ;) don't underestimate the mongoose
Im looking to get a MTB - Complete noob and haven't rode a bike in 10 years! ( only 27 lol ) Do you think the Marlin 7 will do the job for the first few years? budget about £500 :D Also what size frame for me i'm 177cm 5ft 10ish ... 17.5 or 18.5
yah, agreed. I haven't had a Diamondback since I was a kid but I have a Trek Xcaliber now and I am pretty impressed with the quality of Trek bikes starting with the Marlins. I wanted hydraulic disk and air shock which is the only reason I didn't get a Marlin 5 or 7.
u forgot one point- having a freewheel hub or cassette hub. Having a freewheel hub and jumping around can easily bend the axle, especially if its a quick release one
DawsonBailey500 i tried looking for somthing around $ 250 but ended up getting a $320 bike that is as if it costs $400+ but i am not sure u can get it in america (its a bergamount roxtar 4.0) if u can i would take a look
I got a very good beginner hardtail for $850. A 2021 Specialized Rockhopper Comp 27.5. It originally costed $560, but the place i bought it from had upgraded the shifter and brakes to much better ones. Its a very good beginner bike. I recommend this bike

I just have to say big thank you to Seth.. 3 yrs ago this was the first ever video i watched on this channel and i bought my first bike following these guidelines and the bike holds up perfectly.. also with his vids i've learnt how to work on my bike
My first mtb was this overdrive but a 2015. Thing can take a F****** BEATING DUDE!!!! Definitely set me up good for my enduro bike! Soon to make a jump to the DH 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
I went back and forth between this bike and the GT Aggressor Pro from dicks. They seemed very comparable since they had similar parts and specs. Next bike upgrade will probably be a Diamondback since they seem to be more engaged in the US mountain bike scene and more known for servicing. The GT had not been bad though!
McNulty funny how you have no clue what you are talking about. Cable disc brakes are GARBAGE. V brakes are way better and don't suffer from overheating or fade. What I think you are trying to say is Hydraulic disc brakes, which are NOT cheap by any means, but far superior to V brakes and and 2000% better than garbage cable discs Why don't you do some steep downhill with cable discs, and come back and tell me how great they are???? Its clear you never have
In case anyone happens upon this particular video, i can vouch for this bike. After having watched this video 2years ago, I bought this exact bike and it was AAHHHMAAZING! It was $600 CND on Amazon and was shipped to my door. A huge thank you to, Berm Peak for doing such an amazing job reviewing and demonstrating the capabilities of this bike. I now have my first full suspension bike and am stoked to get out on it this summer. Thank you again!!
My mountain bike has stickers saying "MTB" all over it,yet it has a threaded headset, rim brakes and once i descended THREE stairs on it,and the brakes fell apart,i hope i will soon get enough money for Trek Marlin 5 2020
Just came across this video. I bought this exact bike back in November 2017 and immediately added a Luna Cycle BBS02/52v kit. I've got over 8,100 miles on it a variety of bike paths, trails, hills, street on it. Over the past two years I upgraded the rear cluster, derailleur. Because adding the mid-drive changed it to a 1x8 I've since converted it to 1x9 with a lower first gear to better climb steeper hills with less power assistance. I also have wider knobbier tires on it. 8,000+ miles I've worn out a few clusters, chains, brake pads, even a chain ring which is now a narrow-wide. I actually used this as primary transportation for most of two years, faster than public transit in most instances. I've yet to, though plan on upgrading to hydraulic brakes and upgrading the fork. This bike is a workhorse, it outperforms many bikes that cost more and gets complemented all the time.
I’m getting. Giant trance 2 2018 for Christmas, I have to pay half of it though $1500 aus. Because I had my previous mountain bike stolen from my house I haven’t ridden a bike in 4 months, I’m so exited becuase it’s my first really good mountain bike. Merry Christmas everyone
I bought my very first mtb a month ago with the help of this very video. A 27.5 hardtail with all of these checking out. It cost me around $300 with accessories. Truth be told, I dont do jumps like you do but I like traveling up the mountain roads as excercise and enjoying the scenery going downhill. BEST DECISION EVER!
4 days ago, I bought a DB Mission Pro :) my beginner bike. Haven't shredded in 15 years but its like riding a bike right? Nooooo... I am sooo out of shape lol barely made it 20 minutes without passing out
Hahahaha I remember that was me when I stole a road bike when I ditched school one day when I was in high school and I ended up falling in love with biking and rode the bike till it broke and now into cycling
I found a Diamondback Overdrive from 2013 (Green/grey) at the dump a while back, A new chain and tyres as well as loads of cleaning lubrication and adjustment and it's mint. I mainly use it for on road but sometimes take it on trails, Probably the best bike I've owned so far.
Got a 1994 Cannondale Super V that I do trails on. 24 years old, older than disc brakes, older than threadless headsets, but still super fun and better than most $400 bikes out there.
I love it! I have 35 year old Nishiki! ...but let's just say it's VERY tired. :) ...however, my 25 year old chromoly bicycle is still the best bicycle on the planet!
I actually used this video as a basis to start looking so thank you! I found a redline zander and am loving it so far. Chain slap is definitely an issue but it has basically same components of the bike featured in this video.
I was in this situation two months ago and went used. Got a used trek superfly from my neighbor for a great deal and I’m a big believer in buying used >>>> buying new
just you wait...in 2 years time you'll be broke with a fancy new mountain bike, scars all down your shins, and words like "gnar" and "stoked" embedded deep into your vocabulary.
I got a bike like 5 years ago and it was just meant for biking. Now I'm starting to get into mountain biking and planning to get a decent mountain bike. The bike was great, although too small. The bike I'm looking at is going for 400€ and might be good. The reviews are mixed, some say it sucks but some say it's nearly flawless. I can physically visit the store in a month and then I'll just pray my dad to buy it, or pay a small part of it, since I'm still kind of young and I want new skis for the winter.
Update: I bought the bike for full price, ripped it, and it got stolen! Now I'm ordering a slightly more expensive bike (50€ more expensive when on sale) with better drivetrain and suspension and bigger tyres. I will definitely be considering the bigger tyres since the bike I'm getting has 29x2.20" tyres so I'll be on the lookout! Also winter tyres because I live in the north and so I can bike to a nearby ski resort to rip on skis and snowboard!. The police department is financing 200€ of it so I like it. I also got a BMX which I really enjoy! Also getting new skis (to do tricks). Considering getting a skateboard for next summer and probably a scooter for the heck of it. That was basically it
Of course bike quality makes a difference but don't be put off. Back in the day, we used really horrendous steel bikes with no suspension and nasty side pull caliper brakes, and most of us lived.
My bike was like $120 and after 7 years of abuse it's still working like the first day. My friend even drove it and was impressed. Even if he has a $800 bike.
My bike only passes 1.5 and that's the derailleur hanger. The bike fits me but bigger would be a bit better. But for less than 90 bucks that my parents didn't even want me to buy (because they don't care) it is a decent bike . it has a usable gearset, not absulute shit suspension, not shit Tyres. At least I take care of it and do maintenance regularly unlike a lot of people in my friend circle.
I ride a 1995 schwinn predator bmx with 20 inch maxxis tires, only one brake, three pece cranks, aluminium wheels, and one gear. It,s a blast even thou it only has 2 things on this list it flies.
This was very helpful, I came over to see what to look for when purchasing a better bike for my thirteen year old. I want to get something that will last for quite awhile and that he can really enjoy. This was exactly the information I need, instead of someone pushing specific brands.
First, I love the channel! Secondly, inspired by you, I’m really interested in getting into riding. This video was perfect for the guy that wants to invest minimally for now (and doesn’t have much of a budget haha) THANK YOU!!!
Great informative video Seth ! Recently bought an entry level GT Aggressor comp and it seems to pass all the tests. Gonna upgrade the tires soon. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks to this channel and this video especially, I bought a GT aggressor comp (similar parts to what's mentioned in the video) about 3 years ago. since then I have become damn near fearless (within reason) on this bike but it was holding me back. just two weeks ago I sold one of my dirt bikes and saved up enough money to buy myself a 2020 trek fuel ex8, it is the most fun thing i have ever done and i couldn't be happier with it. thank you
Super helpful video! My dad I purchased bikes this month and this information was so valuable! I ended up getting a “giant talon 2” and I’m the more I get to know my bike the more I see how each point you hit here was so crucial.
I have a Trek Marlin 5 and it's served me well for the last 4 years with little to no maintenance needed. When I out grow this one, I'll just get a Marlin in a bigger size. They are great bikes.
Thankyou, this means a lot for beginner like me. Thankfully my ne bike nearly met all your criteria, except for the crankset thing 😂. Anyway, keep makin good content!
for everyone reading this, i watched this video and found a Walmart bike with disc brakes and lever hears, i didnt listen to what he said and i bought it 150$. the front breaks broke after taking it our of the store, and the gears didnt shift properly, i do not recommend buying a Walmart bike unless you are ready to ride a broken bike. i then went to dicks sporting goods and bought a gt aggressor, works great and they check over it before you leave so everything works, and if you buy the warranty, they will replace the bike if anything happend, even if the frame snaps they will replace it. dont buy a Walmart bike
TheFlamingGaming i could of told ya cable discs are trash. Zero pressure modulation, super quick fade, and poor overall performance with repeat braking. Hydraulic discs is what you want. You don't have to wonder if you will come to a stop on steep hills, or fly off the trail/into traffic
So I’ve been watching your videos for about a year or so now, I came back to this video for when I decide to pull the trigger and order myself one, tonight was the night, I got a Marin bobcat trail 4 MTB 2021, it was like $700 which was basically what I expected but I’m frickin hype to finally get in on the action, thanks Seth 🤙🏻
bro if diamondback was available where i live i would get one for sure. i have you to thank for that. i bet diamondback would be glad they partnered with you
I just got a Specialized Rockhopper Comp and at about $800 it's absolutely fantastic. The basic rockhopper is about $550 and the highest end expert version is just north of a grand. With 5 different levels to choose from it's a great line
Seth: Your only a year away from selling all your belongings Me: pfht yeah right Also me a year later: Well this 5000 dollar mountain bike looks nice but i dont think i need it.... oh shit its in red, well i need it now, its obviously the bike holding me back and not the lack of skill.
just getting into MTB, i picked up a used 2012 cannondale trail SL1 hardtail a few weeks ago and really love that i can come to this channel and learn pretty much anything about bikes or MTBing, keep the great videos coming man.
I knew I was hooked so I skipped the beginner bike and went from a Walmart bike to a Diamondback Release 3, which I could grow into. Absolutely 0 regrets.
I have been scouring TH-cam for this information... first video in hundreds that actually gave me something useful. Most videos start with "So you want to be a professional mountain biker? Let me show you have to second mortgage your house." or "Should you get a full suspension or a hardtail? Answer? Yes."
Norco is also a good make with cheaper range models, and the youth models are better equipped than the others, can be a little on the heavy side though, but expect anything under $600 to be.
Thank you for this video even though it is from 2017 this has helped me make my decision on a GT Avalanche Sport. I will probably not go race in the woods and here in Denmark we do not have any mountains so it is more a bike for fitness in the flat trails around the woods and normal rides around my town.
remember how in the end he said "you will sell all of your stuff and buy an irresponsibly expensive bike". Well he was not lying please help i have a problem
i still have rim breaks on my old kona and it works amazingly, they are way easier to service and fix and adjust. I don’t think rim breaks are terrible but they are hard to find parts for and mostly are vintage, but don’t be scared to try them on an old bike

Thanks for the concise information. Someone looking for a good bike doesn't necessarily want to drop the equivalent of rent for something good. They also don't want to get something so cheap it breaks fast. Good video! 👍
I’m getting a whisky flask for my entry mtb at Christmas
Why should I carry a whiskey flask on me man.
Nothing says "fuck it, I'll hit that" like a flask of whiskey. Not exclusive to mtb talk.
One of the bikes that he shows are bad is literally the bike I am using right now
I found my first MTB in the garbage and used it for a year. Just enjoy your bike and upgrade when you think you're ready.

Thanks for inspiring me to get started on mountain biking 🚵♀️
👍🏼 I started on a $30 mongoose (craiglist) now I have this exact diamondback I am having lots of fun.
This is exactly the video I think everyone needs to watch in the beginning of their process! Which is where I'm at right now. I have learned so many things and none of them were nearly as needed in the start as this. I'm about to stalk your channel and look for every other video I can find. Thx

What beginner bike did you purchase???

Thanks, i'm looking for 29in ...........................$250-300 range....................

If there is nowhere to mount a flask holder, then you should definitely avoid buying the bike if you are serious about biking.
look at what i said
They make Flask holders form MTB???
Ever herd of a hydration pack
yes of course, I was just wondering if there was a flask holder designed to be installed on a mountain bike.
Flask holder mount is important as it holds the battery after you convert it to an ebike.
I purchased a hardtail cannondale catalyst 4 about two years ago. It has all of the qualities mentioned in the video. I have crashed numerous time at high speeds and it has held up wonderfully. I purchased it for around $420. Great entry level bike!

yah, agreed.
Some good information has been presented here to guide a newcomer. Cool to see that there is a bike that you actually recommend for less than $500.

Subbed. When addressing beginners, no other channel that I've found (with 'shelter in place' I've seen a lot) does anywhere near as good a job.

Go Clunker a normal priced disk brakes will alway out perform rims.
McNulty funny how you have no clue what you are talking about. Cable disc brakes are GARBAGE. V brakes are way better and don't suffer from overheating or fade.
What I think you are trying to say is Hydraulic disc brakes, which are NOT cheap by any means, but far superior to V brakes and and 2000% better than garbage cable discs
Why don't you do some steep downhill with cable discs, and come back and tell me how great they are???? Its clear you never have

I bought this bike for my dad. He loves it!

That was basically it
How many bikes do you have man

for everyone reading this, i watched this video and found a Walmart bike with disc brakes and lever hears, i didnt listen to what he said and i bought it 150$. the front breaks broke after taking it our of the store, and the gears didnt shift properly, i do not recommend buying a Walmart bike unless you are ready to ride a broken bike. i then went to dicks sporting goods and bought a gt aggressor, works great and they check over it before you leave so everything works, and if you buy the warranty, they will replace the bike if anything happend, even if the frame snaps they will replace it. dont buy a Walmart bike
