    WARNING THIS ISNT MEANT TO BE AN EDUCATIONAL VIDEO ON HOW TO PROPERLY INSTALL, WIRE AND SET UP A DUAL BATTERY SYSTEM - this is just what I did with Tony and I have no idea what I'm doing. If you are an expert and want to tell us how shit it is and how much better you would have done then just reply to this pinned comment, that way we can keep all the comments in one spot for me to screen shot and have a laugh with my mates.

      Mate, that's not how you wire a discombobulator block. You need to flip the scramble to top side and then you push the inconverter lengthwise.

      Don't worry about the haters. I've been a sparky for 19 years the wankers that focus solely on making things look nice, fuck everything else up royally! (Loose connections, improper fuse locations, and the main one is tightly bunched and cable tied wiring which de-rates the cable and it gets hot)

    Hey bud
    I suggest getting your solar setup sorted before you go for a second battery, either a hardmounted panel or a blanket you can plug in and see how that goes first.
    Keep up the awesome work!

    • @TylerThompson90
      @TylerThompson90  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey mate, yep we actually got a 250watt safiery global solar blanket from drifa we took to tassie and worked a treat. I reckon ill upgrade to lithium in the near future still though to give me a bit more power, rather then having two second batteries

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TylerThompson90 Any battery bigger than 120AH will suffice as long as you have a charger that can keep up with charging it.
      Rule of thumb is if your battery setup is under 200AH capacity, stick with a 25A DC Charger, but if it's over, you'll need to step up to a 40A charger.
      In that case, I'm going to suggest an Intervolt DCC Pro, as they have different charging profiles, a smaller footprint for mounting and all wiring is terminated with battery lugs, rather than a prewired plug setup, so if anything goes wrong with the unit, it's an easy swap out and replace.
      Also compatible with your smart alternator. 👍

    • @TylerThompson90
      @TylerThompson90  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The same company that does my solar blanket have a new slimline lithium battery out that will fit behind the back seat so thinking of upgrading to that at some stage. Its only 100AH but will still give me more power then the 120AGM plus charge quicker and lighter

    Cable gland the rear to put things into tub, opening the rear vent to put cables will let dust through and allow water ingress because vent has rubber that opens and closes as required for cabin pressure to allow doors to close.

    Hey mate nice vid. Those large gold fuses and fuse holders in my opinion are not upto the off road job. The caps on the fuses break and make it hard to fault find. Much better off using maxi or terminal fuses. Just my 2 cents worth mate. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Tyler, just one thing, i'm pretty sure the Navara being brand new would have a smart alternator. if it does the blue overide wire needs to be connected to an ignition source in order for the charger to work correctly as the new alternators vary their voltage up and down for emissions so the charger needs to compensate for this. just my two cents. john

    Tyler what you need to add to your system is a battery monitor that measures current going in and out. It is good to know the exact status of your battery, voltage is not good enough. I have a cheap one off eBay but maybe you could get your Drifta mates to get you a Victron one. Also when you go solar there are pro's & con's but I like my permanently attached solar system, no mucking around putting up solar panels around the place.

    Hey mate, The blue wire on the DC-DC charger isnt a "overide" for jump starting. It is an ignition sense wire. This is to be connected to an ignition activated positive to overcome the variable voltage issue with new vehicles fitted with "smart" alternators. You should connect that wire to get the best out of your charge possible .👍👍

    I know it’s hell expensive, but Lithium will sort you out big time. Lighter, can be discharged heavily keeping the voltage higher throughout and it’s safer. Also they hold thousands of cycles, you’re going to go thru three/four AGM by the time you have to swap a lithium.

    Fantastic setup looks neat enough but you can't keep everyone happy, the second battery is what it needs for sure. Jaycar are doing some neat fold up solar panel at the moment, the 200 or the 260 watt one's would be the go. you could make a anderson to anderson plug Ext lead to get the length needed to get it out to the tub, then just plug the panel straight in. $300 for panel and wiring, perfect for when the car isn't moving :)

    Not bad mate. IMO you will need both batteries. From memory those Kickass AGM batteries are only designed to discharge about 30-35 amps. Which at 12Vdc only gives you 420 watts. Not even close to what’s required to run that inverter.
    Definitely change them fuses to a Midi fuse style.
    You desperately need to install a Low Voltage Disconnect to the AGM battery. Kickass do a Cool unit with Anderson plugs pre fitted.
    Set up a high amp (200 + amp) 12v relay to turn the inverter on and off. Have the switch setup to trigger the relay from the low voltage disconnect protected side.
    Otherwise nice job 👍

    Nice job. I've recently set up a second battery system in a camper trailer and it is indeed a money pit! I have a couple of observations, you can do what you want with them! I notice you haven't put a tub liner in the back of the ute - I can't recommend them highly enough, stops the tray getting scratched and then rusting. Second thing, yeah that inverter has to come off the floor! You might not plan on flooding the cabin, but you never know! Especially if you go to places like the Cape, etc. Could you maybe mount it to the back of your centre consol, standing up? Some sort of protective cover on it so Kai doesn't kick it?!

    Love your Videos Tyler, As mentioned, I would change those fuse terminals over as i used to use those in my old car (granted they were in the engine bay) but after a few years they started cracking and falling apart. You might not have that issue being its away from the heat of the engine bay, but Worth changing over in my opinion.
    I would also look at running a Lithium Battery for what you are doing. I currently have a 120AH lithium battery but may downsize in my new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon to a 60AH lithium battery for space saving and I would say it would still have more safe capacity out of that than the 120AH AGMs.. plus you'll save quite a bit of weight. If you wanted to get super fancy, you could have a custom built lithium battery to fit into a small area, but may not be worth the trouble for most people haha.
    Good luck with your adventures and hopefully one day i can go for a drive with you, you seem to find a lot of good spots =D

    Hey mate great video. Can you feel the battery when you are sitting in the back seat?

  • @bendethera1
    @bendethera1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A mistake I made was.....with the solar panel I connected to my ctek and ctek smartpass I didn't realise I needed to cut the wires that went into the solar panel regulator. What was happening was the panel with a cheap PMW regulator was putting out about 15 amps, the solar panel regulator was gobbling up 4 or 5 of those amps and then to Ctek with a MPPT regulator was eating up more of amps so only about 5 or 6 amps were actually making it to the battery to charge.
    To solve the problem I simply cut the wires in and out of the solar panel regulator and soldered them together to by-pass the cheap regulator that came with the panel. Hope that is helpful if you didn't know already.
    Bet you are pleased with how the beast is coming together.

      @TylerThompson90  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, so I've got a solar blanket I'm using now and with mine it has its own solar controller that by passes the dcdc charger and goes straight on to the battery and seems to be working good for the moment. Ill keep an eye on it though, cheers!

    • @bendethera1
      @bendethera1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TylerThompson90 Hi Tyler, it all depends on the quality of your solar blanket as to which is the best way to connect your blanket either to the battery direct or via the DC to DC Charger. Check what type of solar regulator is attached to your solar blanket either a PWM (only OK) or MPPT (way better). Your Kickarse DC to DC charger has a MPPT regulator - meaning, if your blanket is PWM you will be missing out on every drop of that luscious sunlight that a MPPT can convert. The second reason to use your DC to DC charger is your solar blanket will not be a 'smart' charger meaning it will keep pushing power into a full battery risking damage to the battery. Where as, your DC to DC is a 'smart' charger meaning it will control the power going in right down to trickling just the right amount right up to 100%.
      Kings have just released a 'master class' in off grid power in a 4 part series and it is excellent to get a handle on your system. The first video is basic, but the others I found useful, you might too. It is really easy through a lack of knowledge to ruin a second battery, I have certainly wasted a few bucks on my learn curve.
      Looking forward to the video in the bush now the Navara is all done!

  • @T1000.Android
    @T1000.Android 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Plug your solar blanket into your mppt dcdc kickass charger and your battery will stay full. That charger can handle 400watts of solar! Now that's KICKASS.

    I was hoping to see how u got around the alternator, I’m sure your rig would have a voltage sensitive thing. Or smart alternator, what Eva they call it. Looks like u didn’t need to do anything ?

    • @bradharris377
      @bradharris377 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's all typically handled in the charger, the Redarc and KickAss ones both accommodate for the smart alternators it seems

      8AWG wire is rated for 40 amps & 6AWG is rated for 55 amps.
      8 gauge is fine for what you have Tyler, eg the BCDC charger has a maximum of 25amps going into the Charge battery.
