    These dual-channel sliders are common among cheaper stereo radio receivers of the past as they would control volume for both audio channels at the same time.

      Jason Simpson I believe you are thinking of logarithmic dual sliders (for volume control), not linear.

    FYI, the proper name for these is "Dual Ganged, Slide Potentiometer". Dual ganged means that the two resistor elements are isolated, but they respond to the same physical input.
    When buying these, watch out for whether you're buying a linear one, like the one in this video, or the 'audio taper' variety that responds non-linearly. These ones are preferable when manipulating signals where an logarithmic response is desired, such as audio.
    For even more fun, these 'pots' can be bought with small motors so the output of the pot can be adjusted by your circuit and/or program.

    Stereo ... Left and Right channels for audio mixing... probably the most common use. Simple, but great fun!

    I used three 1MOhm ones for controlling the colour of an LED Strip. I wired the linear pot in such a way that the two 1Ms were in series, giving 2MOhm, then I connected the base of a Transistor with a small as possible gain, I think it was around 15 or so :) and wired it to the led Strip. It worked a treat, and I can manually create all the colours I want, and learn how much rgb it is. The whole thing is now lighting up the inside of my selfmade reflow-oven. ..

      That sounds pretty ace, I bet it is a lot of fun throwing those sliders up and down.

    Hi David, thanks for your video! In audio usually logarithmic potentiometers are used. This is because human hearing is not linear and to give the user more control around unity gain (the "0db mark"). For example: In the beginning of the channel a movement of 10mm corresponds with 30db volume increase, whereas further up the channel the same movement corresponds to 10db volume increase.

      Not see you about for a while Dustin. I might have to pick up a logarithmic one too!

    Lighting boards might use them still . Perhaps they are using now using hall effect for scene and cues

      I salvaged mine from an old broken lighting board. Very usefull little things. Mine dont have the circuit board attached. Just bare pins on the underside. I soldered wires on to use with breadboard.

    I love your voice. So relaxing. Just please lower your mic speaker, it's gotten increasingly louder and more of an echo over last few months. Can't get volume at the right level so I can hear that great voice without hurting my ears. Luv u man!!

    See if you can attach a motor to it and turn it into a servo :P You can even use the circuit board from a spare/old/damaged servo and build a "linear actuator" type thing :D

    Hi David. How you are well. So my keyboard’s volume slider finally packed up. (Roland EP7) very old model.(1990) . I would like to know what would be the outcome if I had to replace the 10k B x2 slide potentiometer with a single 10k slide potentiometer… my keyboard just finally stopped pushing out volume…

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The taper just describes the resistance profile (I think) B isn't linear. So the resistance will be the same from 0-10k but it'll be a different volume across the range of movement but it will still work. Not sure what the x2 means, two slide pots?

    Where did you get the power distribution PCB with barrel jack and pins etc. to bring (what I assume is 5V regulated) into the board?

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yo! You can pick one up for pennies. "breadboard power supply" will get you there. It brings out 5v, 3.3v and VIN

    is there a way to use these linear ones for volume control? When I connect those, they jump a big difference. Nearly 60% of the trail seems useless.

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think someone else said this in the comments (so props to them) but human hearing isn't very linear so that is why those potentiometers are different.
