    Thanks for taking the time to show us this repair! I’ve got to fix a pair of faders that have broken shafts and I now have the confidence to complete the repair.

      Good Luck! Of course, it is always best to replace the faders. My solution was more of a "use what you have at home" fix. The problem with cleaners is that they easily wash away the grease. The feel, then, is different. What I haven't tried yet is battery terminal grease or FaderLube.

    Very interesting video clip. Usually I would use some lubricating oil for slide controls , sometimes they still remained a bit noisy, I was always afraid of taking them apart incase I damage them. Thanks to your great viid, I would now dismantle them and repair them. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for watching and good luck. You just have to work slowly and carefully.

    Thanks for the video. How do you repair broken/cracked carbon strip? JVC model especialy M70, RC-838 ussully face non effective slider pots problem.

    • @OldSchoolElectronics

      I've never actually repaired ones that were that bad. But in theory, you could maybe mix some graphite powder and glue and spread that around. You probably couldn't match the original resistance exactly though. Experiment is what you have to do.

    Hi . Hope you are well.
    Great video!
    So my keyboard’s volume slider finally packed up. (Roland EP7) very old model.(1990) . I would like to know what would be the outcome if I had to replace the 10k B x2 slide potentiometer with a single 10k slide potentiometer… my keyboard just finally stopped pushing out volume…

    Good video. Do you happen to have a video of how to remove the pot from the board? the slider fell out of mine and I either need to install a new pot or try and insert the slider back into the pot.

    • @OldSchoolElectronics

      Thanks. I don't have a video of this (removing the sliding pot) I think, but it is not that difficult if you take your time. Best to take pictures of each and every step. That is a big help.

    Great restoration and what a patience, surely needed.
    About carbon track cleaning: alcohol or contact cleaner wouldn’t soften the carbon film, making it easier to be scratched off by the normal operation of the sliding/rotating contacts?
    Thanks for sharing!
    P.S.: I can’t imagine why someone would glue all potentiometers - this is crazy.

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting, sir. I didn't have problems cleaning this because I worked gently. You could remove the carbon if you rubbed too hard. What has your experience been? The spray seems to have no adverse effects. That was a bizarre case of glue in the sliders. Although it was a few years ago, that boombox seemed quite worn out. Sorry that I didn't write so quick, but I am not on TH-cam very much at the moment

    i have a old sherwood preamp with sliders the right side kicks off and on but if i play with the slider it kicks on do u think it could be just a dirty slider

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely. It could also be worn, but I would say unlikely in your case, unless the preamp itself looks all beat up.

      In that case it would be a good idea to spray all of the controls with a contact cleaner which you can get from an electronics shop. Radio Shack sells some (Control/Contact Cleaner) or if you are in Europe you can use Contact 61. Do it with the power off, of course. Not too much, not too little. Work the controls back and forth a few times after you spray them.

      @@OldSchoolElectronics tahnks for the help i used deoxit d5 and now it works can u buy new sliders if it acts up again i just have a feeling its the slider becuse when it was acting up if u played with the slider the sound would kick back on

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! Yeah, Deoxit works, too. Radio Shack was just a cheaper option. Getting new sliders that mechanically fit and have the same electrical characteristics is difficult. It was probably just dirt/oxidation. Deoxit would not have fixed a worn slider. So I don't think you have much too worry about.

    What Screw size do you use there? is there a standard size for slide pots?

    how do the Knobs off? I have an old radio and want to clean the face up and the only thing left stopping me are the 3 slider knobs

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The slider knobs normally just pull right off. If not, you can try to use spoons (tea or table) to push them up. Maybe you can get 2 spoons under and then slowly and carefully leverage them off.

    My JVC R-x40 balance is off. Right channel weaker than left. Curious is the slider potentiometer can be cleaned inside.

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never worked on a RX_40 before. So I don't know if you can spray contact cleaner inside. But normally you should be able to open sliders or drill a hole to spray into if there are no openings. But I would double check to make sure the problem is the sliders before taking them apart. Check the input levels right at the inputs of the sliders for each channel. I will be online again next week as we are vacationing right now.

      @@OldSchoolElectronics Thank you. Turns out my sliders weren't dirty arlt all. There is however, an adjustment that can be made to both the right channel and left channel cixut board (turning the plastic screw left or right to achieve 5 mV). I did however destroy both my volume and balance sliders during my disassembly. I need new ones now. This unit is basically my Lear jng unit as I'm just getting into vintage electronics. I'm hoping new sliders will fix my balance issue

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I didn't know your level of vintage electronics/test equipment. A learning unit is a good thing; I have broken stuff myself before. How did you come to the conclusion that the controls were bad? The adjustment you mentioned is the idle adjustment; it would not be your problem.

      Follow-up question: What lubricant do you use for that?
      Deoxit D5 doesn't mention "lubricates" as such, but has Stoddard solvent , which is petroleum based and has a low dielectric constant, so: not conducting.
      It however evaporates fairly quickly. So I wouldn't be to worried about it modifying the resistance value, but then it also means it loses it's lubricating potential...

    • @OldSchoolElectronics
      @OldSchoolElectronics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, not on TH-cam all the time since it really isn't a paying job. Anyway, I don`t remember the spray I used at the time. I used whatever I had around the house. Something like the Radio Shack Control/Contact Cleaner with Lubricant would also work. To do it the real proper way, you would probably have to take it apart and use an electrical contact grease. Time consuming and not super easy.
