i saw micky in concert a few nights ago because my dad has been a life long fan, his first record he ever got was there headquarters album when he was like 6. he’s been a fan of them and followed them through their whole career he was born in 61 so since he was a little boy they have been his favorite. they still are his favorite singers to this day but that concert is the first time ive really been introduced to them, so now i’m pretty interesting and have been looking into them now and starting to listen to their music. so thank you very much for this video!
Me too! I know they have reruns in the US right now. I think the fact that they have had new fans after several reruns over the decades shows how good this show is. Thanks for watching! Xxxxxx
I loved The Monkeys” show as a kid. It was my favorite. Years later , in college, I dated a very hip girl (think Edie Sedgwick) who was obsessed with “The Monkeys” and she had these phenomenal records that I’d never heard, it was backdrop to our time together. I’ve seen snippets of the Jack Nicholson penned “Head” and watching this lovingly produced history has inspired me to watch it in earnest tonight
Davy was my favorite as a teen. I've grown to love them all for different reasons. Just recently saw Micky in concert and met in at a FANBOY event. I'm blessed. We're blessed to still have him with our music and memories.
@@brendajones7111 Absolutely! I'd love to meet Micky. I think the last UK tour Micky and Peter did was when I was first getting into the Monkees and I didn't get the chance to see them. I've regretted it ever since!
I missed them several times thinking I had time.... WRONG! When I found out Micky was going to be here; I wasn't going to miss him! I regret not seeing them all when I could.
As a fan of The Monkees for 8 years, I think you made a great job to introduce them with this video! I hope you can make new people get into this wonderful show/band that for me is one of the greatest symbols of the 60s zeitgeist and that means so much to me since I first watched it 8 years ago ❤️
The Monkees are my #1 favorite group followed by the Beatles in the #2 spot. I bought the 2 season DVD sets, so I can get a dose of the Monkees any time I want.!!!!
Thanks to my mother for introducing me to this band at such a young age. This band has had such an influence over my sense of humor, my taste in music, and my personality in general. As I enter a new chapter in my life I will carry that influence with me
The pretty girl in the silver dress at the beginning of this video is actress Gillian Holt. She played the lovable airhead Princess in The Monkees 1997 TV special and was Davy's real life girlfriend at the time
Great job! I fell into the Monkees stranglehold when I was around 5 years old (circa 1977 - ish) and once you’re in, you can’t get out! Like the mafia Lol The 1986 reunion cemented that stranglehold. Amazingly talented individuals when brought together becomes lightning in a bottle like Frawley mentioned. Keep the Monkee candle burning !

I was a fan of The Beatles first (90s Anthology series), then The Monkees ('97 TV Special), which introduced me to so many bands and many fandoms. Oddly enough #Monkeeschat IRC back in the 90s introduced me to Peter Noone (Hermans Hermits), back when Peter used to hang out in his chatroom after shows. lol Those were the days! We'd catch Nez as his astronaut avatar sneaking around VR3D to test newly-built model structures, years before he closed VR3D for private concerts. This was when fansites sprung up everywhere, few still exist. I came up empty-handed when searching for a place where fans congregate to feel some sense of communal sorrow the day Nez died, it hit me really hard.
You were introduced to the Monkees through the 97 special? That's crazy! I'm always curious about how different generations got into the Monkees. I don't know about fan sites, but online there are Monkees fan communities on twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Discord.
I was born in '73 and had a vague remembrance of loving The Monkees show as a toddler. I particularly remember the opening sequence. Fast forward to 7th grade and a new friend I met in jr high reintroduced me to them. I watched every rerun and found two of their albums at garage sales and played them over and over. I know the members of The Monkees were not always fond of their association with the show, but I hope they know/knew the influence they had on kids for years to come. Although the show and music were tightly controlled at first, it gave just enough idea of the counter culture to the kids who watched it so that we could understand that living in "Pleasant Valley Sunday" wasn't necessarily pleasant. It was where my first ideas of dissatisfaction with society were expressed. And then growing up to find Head and truly understand their fight against being boxed in added another level of understanding. They were amazing men who deserved more credit in their time. I'm glad I found and appreciated them for who they were.
Thank you so much for this wonderful comment. It really captures the wonderful experience of discovering the Monkees. From what I've gathered, the 3 that are no longer with us had finally accepted and embraced their Monkee past by the time they died, and Mickey has pledged to continue their legacy. ✌❤
I started watching the Monkees in reruns as a child in the 70’s. My aunt had been around to see the show in the original run, and she had ALL their original albums. When I’d visit, she’d play them for me. I’ve seen Micky, Davey and Peter in concert. Micky and Davey in concert. And just this past April, Micky on his Headquarters tour. I had the pleasure of meeting Micky and filming a clip of him wishing Knight Rider a happy 40th anniversary last September for a Knight Rider Historians TH-cam video. He was most gracious.
Wow! You're so lucky! I wish I saw them when they last toured the UK. Peter was alive then. I had only just started getting into the fandom. I don't know if Micky is planning on playing over here again, but it's possible considering how long he's lived over here.
You can say that I'm kind of a fan. I started watching them in the early '70s when they were rerun on Saturday mornings here in the States. I also met Mike, Micky and Peter. I asked them to sign my arms and then I got them tattooed. So, yes, you can say I'm kind of a fan. I really enjoyed your video. I would only put more emphasis on their singing of listen to the band on 33-1/3. An amazing piece of work, before it got too hippie-ish.
Wow! You're so lucky! Yes, I do love the intro to that version of Listen to the Band- my dream version would have that intro and then build up to the orchestration of the album version
Really? Wow! I'm so jealous! I was just getting into the Monkees when they did their last UK tour (around 2016, when Peter and Micky were touring together) and I seriously regret not going to see them when I had the chance. Thanks for watching!
I saw the Monkees at the Pacific Amphitheater for their 30th Anniversary tour (1996) and was fortunate to get a backstage pass to meet three members. One of the most fun shows I had ever seen. I didn't develop a deeper appreciation for their music until much later as I got older. Especially Nesmith's contributions. Sadly, I saw his last show at The Greek (2021). A memorable show. The Monkees were a "fabricated" band, but a band none the less and worthy of their place in Rock n' Roll history. So much great music!!💗🎶🎵🎸🥁🎹🐒
They were truly wonderful. I was working my first job in 1966 when the show started. Got into it in the '70s when my daughter was in grade school. Still love them. P. is my favorite. ❤
Yeah I had to do that as a preventive measure to avoid copyright claims I'm afraid! They seem to have loosened up, so I don't flip my Monkees episode reviews anymore. Thanks for watching!
1. Watching your vids always feel like I'm watching the highlights of a well-researched documentary but has solid opinions and a whimsical charm 2. You're always teaching me about film and music that I didn't know about, which makes you stand out because music is always a big part! 3. Great vid!
I watched re runs as a child not knowing they were re runs and thinking it was "new" stuff. It wasn't until I saw Elephant Parts in which Mike was clearly older that I realised what I'd seen the whole time was old because Michael didn't look as young as the "recent" episodes I'd watched. It was a good lesson for me in how recorded material alters so much in our lives. (I'm sure I thought the WB cartoons I'd been watching were brand new too.)
That's right! Just looked it up. It was in season 1, episode 7, Monkees in a Ghost Town. You can watch my review of it here: th-cam.com/video/LomZyfA967E/w-d-xo.html
It is really too bad that the studio or whatever was having a strike at the time. I could imagine 33 1/3 would have looked and sounded so much better if they had been using the original studio's resources. With that said, there were a ton of bad decisions. The stages looked like big empty stages and the green screen effects were horrible. Then you throw in an interpretative dance segment that feels like it goes on for 5 hours....LOL... Anyways great job on the video, though some of the flipped images made me doubt my reality at first.
Yeah I think that a guest star having a villain song or something may have worked. Alice Cooper would have made a great guest star. Thanks! Yeah I have to flip it to avoid copyright. I do it after editing so it's weird for me too!
Who is that singing Nine Times Blue nearing the end of your video? Sounds like Micky. Thanks for the good, full-rounded overview, ESPECIALLY for not once again claiming these guys never played their instruments (etc etc) as so many others STILL continue to do despite all the evidence to the contrary. My sister was a fan of the show when it originally aired. She purchased sheet music to their songs which gave me all the opening I needed to pick up and try learn guitar: I chose one song in particular because of all the chord changes, figuring, "gee, if I learn this one song I'll have learned chords to a lot of other songs"---and the song was PAPA GENE'S BLUES---where I also quickly learned was actually written by one of the guys (who supposedly didn't know anything about music). So, I kinda wound up becoming a fan too, in particular, of the songs that THEY wrote and performed, including some very unusual, more experimental stuff. And then, a couple of decades later, even wound up doing a little bit of work for the guy (you can guess who) who wrote that song by which I learned to play guitar. (I also may've had a tiny hand in the evolution of/ ultimate development of what became, ultimately, MTV, but, as you say, that's a story for another day!)
Actually, it's this girl! th-cam.com/video/FMVFq78rBwA/w-d-xo.html Thanks! Yeah I think it's so weir that they even have that reputation amongst people who have so little knowledge of them. Glad you enjoyed the video! Wait, YOU WORKED FOR MICHAEL!!!
@@EnchantedEssays On TV PARTS. Friends of mine became very involved with Michael's projects, much of which seems to have been instigated by my renting of a 16mm print of HEAD in/around 1972 (?not sure) and screening it for them at their house....but this is very simplified version of the "connectings" (inventing a word here) that can start to expand and expand in the film business from a simple "just right" moment. I'll have to add that, being somewhat older at the time of the tv show's initial run, it took a bit of nerve to step out and give some support to these guys who I felt were getting a bad run: they were getting nothing but grief from the "hip-wazzi" who guided popular public opinion then. (There's always that kind of critical fraternity who take it upon themselves to decide what's cool and what ain't, --at least so it seems. )
@@EnchantedEssays And thanks for the info re the song: i couldn't quite make it out in the background. Was just curious (as it DID sound a bit too high to be Micky...meaning his voice ;-7
That's amazing! I need to get round to watching TV parts. Yeah Head is amazing. It's such a fun film to analyse! I can't think of another band who tried to actively destroy their image like that, especially at the height of their fame!
I've already posted 2 about the same film. I reviewed Son of Dracula and thought it was so terrible I had to make a video essay analysing it. I'm thinking of suing Ringo for emotional damages! Here's the review: th-cam.com/video/d9hr2k7W4A4/w-d-xo.html And here's the video essay: th-cam.com/video/2AZKinIggmQ/w-d-xo.html I am planning on reviewing more Harry Nilsson things soon!
this was so interesting!! so the monkees were a fictional band created for tv that became a real band... sounds like a dream scenario if you love the show i enjoyed the mighty boosh jumpscare lol, i had no idea about the inspo for vince's starry cowboy hat!
Pretty good except even though the music was in the background, some of it were either not the Monkees or not the original version. My very first concenjoyed ert wa the Monkees . I got to see them three other times and had I known that Micky was in my area in April, I would have gone to that. Still, I this.
Thanks! I was trying to get covers for the whole thing so that the video could be monetised. Unfortunately, very few people who have covered the Monkees on TH-cam have any available contact information, so in the end up I gave up and used one or two real tracks, which means that this video will never be able to be monetised. I wish I got to see them live! The last time they toured the UK was in the first few months of my Monkees fandom (I think it was just Peter and Micky touring then) so I didn't get the chance to see them. I don't think they've played the UK since, but I may be wrong. Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy my episode reviews too!
Wow I learned so much during this video and it was super interesting! I knew barelely anything about The Monkees. The opening is definitely applicable to me 😅
Have you ever heard of Our Gang (AKA The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Rascals)? Is the series that started all these TV comedies. Look it up. It's really funny.
I feel looking back at the Monkees they were used by the studio. The studio made them famous got their money and when the boys wanted to show they were talented the a.holes pulled the plug. Well done sh.t heads. Head was an amazing film. This shows how the corporation make their money and f@#k the people . Well done guys. I love The Monkees ❤
Absolutely! It's a real shame that the impression that they lacked talent because they were a manufactured band prevails to this day, despite all of the evidence to the contrary. To those of us fans who truly know their story and their work though (however much of a fan they may be- I don't gatekeep), it's something truly special. Thanks for watching! ☺✌❤🙈
The boys got bored with the show. For the 3rd season, they suggested doing a 'variety' show like LAUGH-IN But NBC refused To Change Formats So Both Parties Walked.
Exactly. I can't believe the lack of respect they received. B&B showed they didn't really care about them. They took the money they made off of them and split. Lovers!
Ah cool! I admit I don't really know much of its broadcast history outside of the U.S. I only know that it had reruns in the UK in the 70s because that's when my parents saw it! Thanks for watching!
I edited that before I'd even recorded the video! I'm actually in the process of writing another classic rock video where I'm jogging people's memory with Shrek 2
Oh yeah I inverted all the footage! The way I use it does fall under fair use, but TH-cam's copyright claim system is automated, so it's less hassle to try and avoid it completely
@@EnchantedEssays There MUST be some other way to get around You Tube’s STUPID automated “Prevention Of Fair Use” system. I mean, the Right-Handed guitars that are suddenly built BACKWARDS are the first thing I noticed (I’ve only been playing since 1964, and I’m RIGHT-HANDED), but the faces of Nesmith, Tork, Jones and Dolenz just don’t look quite right in the instances where they’ve also been “flopped”. I also have another question. There are several shots from the show open (that’s when the theme song plays) which face THE CORRECT WAY! How did you manage THAT, while having to “flop” the images with guitars in them? When I bought MY two ridiculously expensive Gretsch guitars (a Country Gentleman and a Streamliner), each of which has a very different sound, but the build quality of each is strictly top-notch. I became acquainted with Fred Gretsch III, who is himself a genuine country gentleman, and a truly fine fellow. Fred is justifiably proud of his guitars (and I am proud to own them). They have a LONG history of being among the highest quality stringed instruments on this planet or any other

Thanks!
Great video! I was wondering when you might post the couple of Harry Nilsson videos you mentioned at the end. :)
I've already posted 2 about the same film. I reviewed Son of Dracula and thought it was so terrible I had to make a video essay analysing it. I'm thinking of suing Ringo for emotional damages!
Here's the review: th-cam.com/video/d9hr2k7W4A4/w-d-xo.html
And here's the video essay: th-cam.com/video/2AZKinIggmQ/w-d-xo.html
I am planning on reviewing more Harry Nilsson things soon!
this is a great video im definitely subscribing and checking out your other videos!
Thank you soo much! 😊❤
This was really great!!
Aw thank you!
I am a big fan of the Monkees if Micky comes to Arizona I'm there
I was about to say I wish he would come to the UK, but I think he did recently. I need to keep track of him!
this was so interesting!! so the monkees were a fictional band created for tv that became a real band... sounds like a dream scenario if you love the show
i enjoyed the mighty boosh jumpscare lol, i had no idea about the inspo for vince's starry cowboy hat!
Glad you liked the video! Yeah there's definitely a crossover of appeal between shows.
You did a great job!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I haven't added all of the links in the description yet guys. I added to the ones to the covers and stuff I used though
Omg !! I didn't know you liked the Monkees. I follow you for league of gentleman stuff 😊
Oh really!!! That's a strange combination! Thanks for watching!
@@EnchantedEssays thank you 😀
Pretty good except even though the music was in the background, some of it were either not the Monkees or not the original version.
The opening is definitely applicable to me 😅
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I think that's the same for most people. That and they know that Simpsons clip
Great story on the Greatest TV show EVER 😎😎
Thank you!
When I was in 7th grade, my grades were so bad that I could only watch two shows a week. One of them was The Monkees!:-)The other-that's another site!
I'm glad it was there for you when you needed it most! I found this ray of sunshine when I needed it most too. Thanks for watching!
Love them
They are wonderful, aren't they. Thanks for watching!
WHERE did you get the backing track - prior to vocals overdub - for Circle Sky (at the 9:30 point)??!!??
From this guy: th-cam.com/channels/4DwjAtF9ggTOfg7vxeKEaw.html
Already went there. Found nothing.
Sorry. I think it was unlisted when they sent it to me to use, but they must have privated it after that.
@@EnchantedEssays It was sent to you?? Any chance you can share?? Thanks so much!!
Have you ever heard of Our Gang (AKA The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Rascals)?
Is the series that started all these TV comedies. Look it up. It's really funny.
Ah yes! I saw some of them, but it was years ago. Thanks for the recommendation!
Lovers!
The Monkees came late 90's from finnish tv channel Nelonen (4)
Ah cool! I admit I don't really know much of its broadcast history outside of the U.S. I only know that it had reruns in the UK in the 70s because that's when my parents saw it! Thanks for watching!
that intro
I edited that before I'd even recorded the video! I'm actually in the process of writing another classic rock video where I'm jogging people's memory with Shrek 2
The magnum opus has arrived 👀
Thanks for tuning in for it! Did you notice that Jack Nicholson appeared twice in my video?
@@EnchantedEssays Yeah! Sorry, I was in class when I made the comment, but now I was able to watch the full video. I loved it!
I dont mind i am french and i want the sing ' Iwant to be free '
I watched them when I was 10
Really? When was that? (If you don't mind me asking)
Why is all your footage of ANYONE with a guitar “flopped” - as though everyone is LEFT-HANDED?
They have a LONG history of being among the highest quality stringed instruments on this planet or any other
Cool! Good for you! Glad you liked the video!
For all the world, SAVE THE FRENCH PEOPLE !
You're right - you skipped over a LOT of information!!!
Indeed! This was just a brief overview for those new to the show
why are they all left handed
Oh yeah I inverted all the footage! The way I use it does fall under fair use, but TH-cam's copyright claim system is automated, so it's less hassle to try and avoid it completely
Please HELP US !
Cause macron is the best ever président i can revendicate one song ...
Sauvez la FRANCE nous combattons le mal .
Mike punched a hole in the wall of the recording studio NOT a hotel, get your facts straight
Actually, you can here straight from the horse's mouth here at 7:35 that it was a bungalow in the Beverly Hills Hotel: th-cam.com/video/PC9lWWD_v7k/w-d-xo.html
I'd love to hear any corrections if you have some real ones though!
They were truly dreadful.
Then why did you watch a Monkees video?
I became a big fan in 1992.
Wonderful! The fact that they have so many generations of fans just goes to show how good they were. Thanks for watching!
