I actually picked up a regular Liars Dice at Walmart the other day, and I'm kinda shocked how much fun I've had with it. My personal gaming preferences tend to be like Sam's, but Liar's Dice struck a bit of a chord with me. The fact it was only $6 for a set of 20.... decent dice in 4 different colors, and some good, solid cups, wasn't bad either.
Tom, your stickers gaff really made my day. I recently stickered the blocks in Julius Caesar by Columbia Games and halfway through noticed that I had put the stickers on the wrong colored blocks. :p
Adding the random strategies via the DD cubes speeds the game along and make the traditional LD more interesting, especially for those that have never played. As a self-publisher (not affiliated with the Tumblin-Dice game by Nash Games), keeping costs down can be a challenge! The critic can only help to improve the game and The Dice Tower opinions are certainly valued. Our collective goal is to get more people playing games!
I watch Tom's, Ryan's and Castelli's reviews just to hope I can improve. Number one I didn't own Liar's Dice so I was and am thrilled to have Deception Dice. I like the game. I think the best thing about the Dice Tower is that we are all sharing our opinion of a game and our opinions are different. In the end I think that makes for a better source for people to watch. Tom has always encouraged multiple reviews of the same game. Heck it's not like he threw it off the roof or set it on fire.
Tom's review = Chief's review (plus criticisms). I think the "lose one dice"/ "gain one dice" for no reason (the "DD"'s) would be annoying to some groups (like mine). Probably need to come up with an alternate rule to avoid people being knocked out by the big dice (or having their opponent keep getting dice back). Maybe the red "DD" could mean that the person who rolled the red DD loses 2x the normal dice if they lose the round, giving them incentive to play safe/others to try to catch them.
"1 2 3 4 6 7" - I've watched Tom's hand movements and clearly they should be interpreted as follows: "one - here's a die with one pip; two - here's a second die with one pip; three - here's a die with three pips; four - here's what you get if you add one of the ones and one of the threes; six - here's the total number of pips on the threes in the middle cup; seven - here's what you get if you total one of these threes, one of the threes in the first cup and one of the ones in the first cup".
Ok, so Tom doesn't care for my game . . . I'll say that you should check out The Chiefs review as he did a much better job at setting up the game and explaining the game see "Deception Dice Review - with the Chief". Until you actually play the game and experience the strategies involved with the DD cube indicators can you appreciate the entertainment value of a NL or star indicator and the others.
