For those commenting about how a Mazda shouldn’t be on this trail, I agree, this was not a good trail for it. Fortunately, I do now have a lift kit installed for an additional 2”, I’ve taken off-road recovery courses, have recovery gear, have underbody protection, and have traveled hundreds of miles off-road. I have found my vehicle limits and can be happy with what I *can* do. I hope people take away from this is that going out there and enjoying nature with good peeps in whatever you have is good enough.
It should also be mentioned that none of us were disgruntled that you were there and we were all eager to help spot and guide you through the tough spots; of which, there weren’t very many.
Glad you went out with your crossover. I am genuinely curious on how your vehicle will handle this trail with the added ground clearance. Work with what you got!
That is what I like about the off-road community. Everyone is eager to help others. At least the Mazda owner knows what he is getting into and is prepared for it. Everyone helping each other and it looked more fun and added good memories to me.
I was ready to groan about the Mazda, but then I looked at it form another angle. He is getting out there, trying new things and seeing more than most of the asphalt cowboys in Florida driving Jeeps on 40's and bro-dozer Super-Duty's. Props to him.
I’ve never overlanded before and I’m in the process of building my gladiator rig. I hope to one day make it out west as I am from KY and maybe someone like you can show me the ropes for areas like this. I love the content man, makes me more excited day by day.
It amazes me that people take cars on trails. It's like Black bear pass. People up there getting stuck and having to get rescued. Just because you almost can doesn't mean you should. Great video. I live in St George and have driven alot of these trails.
The first 20 seconds is so damn true. Solo/ASMR videos do get a lot of hits but making them AND being alone all the time is always worth it. Love the group trips and making those unforgettable memories!
This video reminds me of my first "Adv" motorcycle. I fitted knobby tires to a street oriented bike it and took it offroad and I destroyed that bike. I went through 2 skid plates and 2 sets of crash bars and like the Mazda, I held up all the other riders due to how slow and terrible that bike was for the type of riding I was doing. I sold it and got a motorcycle designed for that riding and surprise, it was way more enjoyable! It was not only more enjoyable for me (having the proper tool makes the job a lot easier) but I wasn't keeping everyone else waiting and carrying me through the trails. I appreciate your patience with him, but dang, its time for him to get something appropriate.
I won’t say you’re wrong. The right tool for the job is exactly the best way to describe it. While the Mazda did make it, it wasn’t as simple as it could be with, say a stock Bronco, Tacoma, 4Runner, XJ, etc. Even the Mazda’s counterpart of a Subaru Crosstrek would’ve likely performed better.
Quick story: About a decade ago, I (F) was with my kids in a 2007 Honda CRV to hike Hawksbill Crag in AR. A sign indicated that I should turn right onto a dirt road. I didn't notice that the only others on the trail were 4x4. As the switchbacks became incredibly steep and rocky, my exclamation { ! } alert flashed on the dash. The kids were screaming, the tires were slipping, and the narrow road trapped us in this adventure. With a rock wall on the passenger side and a cliff fall on the driver, I had to quickly learn how to drive this terrain. Finally arriving at the top, I pried my clenched fingers from the steering wheel and realized that there was also a paved road available to get there. Needless to say, the thrill of that event is why I'm watching Justin's videos, and I drive a 4Runner TRD now. I am an Overlander.
Hey Justin....i have been watching your videos for the past several years. I've learned a lot from your filming and overlanding information videos. We are so very close to the 1000 subs. We live in Northern Utah and hope one day we can meet you out on one of the trails or go on a expedition with ya. Keep up the excellent work and Happy Thanksgiving! 😊
🤔 What are your thoughts on people showing up in under prepared vehicles? (Seemed to cause a lot of extra delays and work stacking rocks that should just be rolled over. ) Fair to the others or all good they'll wait?🤷
@@t.o.f.t.s. it’s a challenge. I won’t lie. When Joe said he was interested in attending, I did my best to think of a trail that i knew was relatively easy. The thing is, easy for what I drive isn’t easy for what everyone drives. And without us helping to spot him, Joe wouldn’t be doing this trail. If nothing else, it was a unifying experience and as long as Joe felt comfortable with the bumps and bruises, that is ultimately up to him.
We've had situations twice now with older rigs that proper maintenance wasn't kept up and the blew a line or a radiator. That is always hard when you get a group of people trying to join in on the fun. It does make for group problem solving time, but still. @@JustinBMcBride
Impressed with the Mazda. My wife has a cx5 with turbo. Pretty nice. Told her I was gonna sell my Jeep and get the new tan cx5, lift it and use for overlanding😄
It’s time for your friend to ditch the Mazda. 😂 They could go buy an old XJ or something cheap that’s meant for off roading and use the car for car stuff. But I know 2023 cheap isn’t that cheap anymore.
I know! Even my brother and I were talking about how my 2016 Tacoma was $31k new, and now a Tacoma is nearly $50k! And the used market isn't any better.
Man, I love Utah, while the PNW has some epic places. Its nothing compared to the diverse landscapes you guys have there. My goal is to get up there every year.
3:40 moving rocks to be able to make a trail with a Mazda....I dunno, I'm not going to 'gatekeep' here, but it seems that such a vehicle should not be there if the trail needs rocks to be moved, especially ones that the guy can just toss out of the way!
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of moving rocks for accessibility myself. I regret not declining that help from our companion, but recognize his concern for me motivated him to do that. I’ll do better about not putting others in a position where they feel they have to for my sake.
All good points. I can confidently say we left no plastic parts on the trail and left it better than when we arrived. I pushed past the limits of the vehicle and need to pull back a little for everyone’s sake.
Oh something I wanted to ask. Was that fire pit you guys used custom or something store bought. I loved the concept of cooking on the edges and the rotating basket.
@justinbmcbride is your fridge running off the starter battery in Medium or High protection mode? Also, I like to request some EcoDiesel featured content.
Thanks for asking. I don’t share the trails I travel publicly. If you are interested in knowing my routes and waypoints, please consider joining as a Localander Tier Member. I share routes in our private Discord server.
So rather than turn around you throw rocks off the trail to get threw ?? Stay the trail and don't modify the trail to get your daily down it . I don't care how u mod out your rig or what u choose to use , how ever know your go no go area's some my just not be accessible for you .
Because hindsight is 20/20, it would’ve been a better use of our recovery resources to use the Maxtrax to ramp him out of some of the scenarios. Life is a collection of experiences, and lessons were learned on this trip.
Thanks for asking. I don’t share the trails I drive publicly on my channel. I do, however, share routes with my channel members. If you would like to join as at least a Localander tier, I can share more info with you.

I hope we get to see some footage of the modded Mazda hitting some trails! All things considered, it did alright.

This one has gotten a lot worse of the years. 2 or 3 years back it wouldn’t have been as much work as it was.
Proud Mazda owner here!
Driving a car like the Mazda on a simple dirt road like this is a good way to learn driving skills 👍

big props to the mazda. I would of never done it in that vehicle. Just shows anything can become a overland rig.
While he did make it to camp, it isn’t a trail I think he is excited to see again.

There’s always that one guy in the Mazda that slows things down….
It only takes one.

Joe would fit in well here in Oregon. I’m always running into prius, Mazda and mini vans off-road 😂😂

Yeah, he made it… it wasn’t unscathed. But he made it.

People need to stop bringing cars onto offroad trails.
Not disagreeing with you.
I agree, there’s always broken plastics parts all over the trails. Stick to soft roading. I don’t understand it.
