I owned the DVD copy of this movie and there's a hidden selection on the menu screen that allows you to view "The Tape". When I was living with my girlfriend (at the time) and her aunt and cousin, we watched the movie and I said to them when it ended that there's a hidden menu option. I didn't tell them what it was but I showed them. Just as it was about to end, I reached into my pocket and dialed the house phone. Once the video ended I hit "Send" and the house phone rang. It scared the shit out of them. I thought it was hilarious. LOL!

That's because Samara is destined to be a destructive force. She was human but something evil possessed her. I believe she was aware of this and that's why she speaks with her mother as a baby asking her to kill her before it's too late. But it's actually too late. So Samara is the tragedy that comes when nobody listens, nobody sees, nobody wants to know. She is the darkness that comes with pure abandonment. And she is the result of an extreme suffering. Her mother was raped. Story tells that when she came something evil possessed her. So it's like a consequence. Samara is a curse and she can't change it. She won't. Sorry my bad english

So I watched this movie again, after three years, this time in 1080p and in a decent television. Well... for me, this is the best horror movie ever made. Why? Not only because of the amazing soundtrack, but because of its ambientation. The green and cold color palette. The mood. It is perfect. This movie is not about jumpscares, dumb teenagers getting killed or cheesy dialogues. No. The entire story is about this tape that kills you after you watch it. But why? Is there a demon or a monster that comes out from the tape? No. There is just this little girl, with strange abilities and an neverending rage. She suffered like hell for seven days - in the dark, in the water, in the cold... no food, no nothing - before she finally died, and now she wants you to witnesses her suffering and taste it (but it is your choice). I see the tape as a form Samara found to spread what happened to her, since no one ever found out the truth. But, since she is a ghost possessed with rage, her goal is to avenge herself against the world, I believe, and that is the reason why even though Rachel discovered everything about what happened and found her at the well, she couldn't rest. Cuz she can't, she don't want to.
OBS: I kinda love Naomi Watts too. She was damn beautiful at this movie.

I love it when horror doubles as a tragedy. Quite a few classic works of horror, such as Frankenstein and ghost stories, have something more than just a scary monster and deaths. They have mystery, and they have an aura of sadness. Almost as though it is bringing the reader to the lowest depths of the world: the saddest and the scariest. And this soundtrack captures that wonderfully.

I remember when this movie came out. I was in college and I didn't bother seeing it in theaters because I thought the premise sounded so incredibly stupid. Fast forward a couple of years when I was in a video store (remember those?) and I saw the DVD in the $1 bin. I bought it on a whim and watched it alone. At the time I was working as a caretaker of sorts of a huge, completely empty dorm that may or may not have a haunted room. I was TERRIFIED. Great movie to this day! Great cinematography, music, acting, everything.

Hans Zimmer is a freaking GENIUS! It's incredible how this man captured EVERY MESSAGE from The Ring and converted it on his score.
0:00 A sweet piano music, eerie, melancolic and beautiful the same time, with a slow rhythm. I can imagine the urban legend that runs in the movie, people talking about a killer, mysterious videotape, and the unlucky people who dare to watch it will find their fate, if they can't find the way to avoid the curse's ending.
0:41 Then we have the same melody, but now it's a extraordinary and flawless orchestra, that captures every single feeling we have as we're watching the movie: the fear of what's behind the curse, the sadness of the story behind it and the pessimism conclusion the movie takes, making it clear that the curse will NEVER stop netherless Samara wants or not.
1:54 And now the chaos. Because Samara's fate is not only "sad", it's also chaoticly depressive. The unnatural force inside of her that keeps her existence is taking control of her mind and making her more and more mad. After all the horrible things she had to pass through, including Anna Morgan pushing her inside of the well, her evil powers are still with her even when she's dead, making her angry and desperate to take all the pain she felt upon us, humans, with a happy, normal lifes. Her powerful, chaotic habilities are taking control of her own mind, driving her to madness, and destroying *everything* it touches.
3:28 Ironically, the chaos disappears and its replaced by a calm, beautiful melody. Probrably when Rachel is running behind the truth about the tape, discovering more and more about this crazy fact that seems to be little, but it's actually a BIG new (and dark) step to humanity. Especially the moment 4:00, it reminds me about Rachel's time running against her as she has few days to save her son, Noah and even herself.
5:11 And now the dark comes back. Deep, powerful, intimidating, that turns into a desperately beautiful, (almost a screaming lament) violin melody and changes time from time its instruments (sounds). I believe this makes mention of each part of Samara: the sweet, innocent little girl, lost in pain and isolation, faced as a beast by everyone else including the animals and her adoptive father. But there is also the evil, unholy and demoniac force that keeps Samara part of our reality, a maleficent force that makes her powers awake and are beyond Samara's own control. And, finally, the ghastly vengeful child, unsure of her own reasons and horribly mad about everything that happened to her, even her own birth, being consumed by her own rage, suffering and despair.
7:10 this beautiful choros looks like the humanity itself, desperate and hopeless with the birth of a weakless demon girl, crying for help. Basically "the science, the police, God... anyone, can ANYONE help us now?". It's apocalyptic.
7:20 And the ending of everything. Samara is sweetly singing, showing her melancolic, pessimist vision about the world, the humans-beings and herself. Her sweet voice together with a creepy lonely piano, gives us the conclusion that she gave up of trying to be wanted, loved and normal, as she was doing with the Morgans. She gave up of trying to be a normal human, and she acepts to be the evil, demoniac threat against our nature.
8:11 of pure perfection. The Ring is 1:55:16 of *pure perfection* in every way possible.

This piece feels like it mirrors the pace of the movie; it builds up slowly, starts out calm and ominous, just haunting enough, then it gets fast-paced and urgent, only to go full creepy at the end. Good assessment. I felt the same way. Samara, no matter what her origins are (which have never been 'officially' explained), whether they be demonic or she is merely an evil human being (not unheard of either, sadly)....she still makes for a terrifying villain. I actually felt for the family here, even though its of course fiction. The same with the Creed family in Pet Sematary: There was something so sad about the destruction of a nice family by evil.....and sometimes by evil CHOICES.
