“In the Garden” is a gospel song written in 1912 by Charles Austin Miles (1868-1946), a pharmacist turned music publisher. According to Miles' great-granddaughter, the song was written "in a cold, dreary and leaky basement in New Jersey that didn't even have a window in it let alone a view of a garden.” By his own account, he had a vivid dream after reading John 20, and was then inspired to write this hymn about Mary Magdalene’s first encounter with her risen Lord.
One of the most beloved hymns of all time is touched with tender grace in this a cappella setting. The message of Mary's encounter with Jesus in the garden always reminds us that we never walk alone. The name Joseph Graham is actually a pseudonym for one of our favorite composers. (Hint: He composed the cantata we just sang on Palm Sunday.)
I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses,
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
    REFRAIN:
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
He speaks, and the sound of His voice, is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me, within my heart is ringing. REFRAIN
I'd stay in the garden with Him, tho' the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go, thro' the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling. REFRAIN
    (Charles Austin Miles, 1912)
