    Excellent video! I didn't know about the refine brush, to help with missed hair etc. Video content like this makes the investment into Photoshop worth that much more! Thank you!

    Never noticed the cloud option before so I’ll give that a go as well as the decontaminate colour option. I always learn something new from your videos. I love the fact that they are generally short and not too complex-thank you once again

      The cloud option is new with version 24 as is the Image Processing tab in Preferences, but Decontaminate Colors has been an option in Select & Mask from day 1 AFAIK.

    good morning Colin, I would love it if you could point me in the right direction for image selection tutorials. Especially ones with busy backgrounds and a person with fly a way hair. I have been stuck on trying to learn how to properly and most efficiently extract a person from an image. Do you provide such a tutorial?
    Thank you.

  • @TrevorDennis100

    Colin FYI I'd changed 'Select Subject' to cloud in the Options, and hadn't even noticed the Image Processing tab in Preferences. When I checked Preferences after watching this video, the Cloud option was already selected, so changing it in the Options bar must change Preferences. This was with Windows 10 if that makes any difference. I used to be a fan of Decontaminate Colors, but some of my fellow Community Experts on the Adobe forums (the ones that tend to get very vocal about colour issues in Photoshop) claim it is not a good idea to use it. I have no idea why, and I am absolutely not a colour Nazi, but I might ask just out of interest.

  • @rogershore3128

    That cloud option is great. I forget it goes to a complex network of computers or else you couldn't do the likes of colourise. I'm be upgrading my mac in a few months so look forward to seeing how these new features cope with high res images. Up until now they have "problems' handling large files to put in mildly!

    Always learning Colin but I have to say my selections are always pretty woeful. Refine hair for example always grabs the background as well for example. It is just something I have never mastered and unlikely to do so no matter what I try. Always learn from you videos.

      Hey dont get down. I think most of vids on youtube are hand picked pictures with studio quality fotos.
      Ive been cutting stuff out for years. It was my job and i still do it now.
      If its wild hair in with a wild BG then u kinda screwed.
      Have u seen the hacks with using blending modes.
      Use 2 layers.
      Layer 1. This is your solid layer. Remove or wild hair
      Layer 2. Try remove using masking tools as best u can. Then if dark hair use : multiply, if light hair use one of the light blending modes.

    Great! I use Select and Mask regularly. Decontaminate colors is very useful. Often it is not possible to make good cutout without it.

  • @Pakiratigri

    Thank you very much for this helpful advice. Then the aim should be that device is just as good as the cloud. Does Adobe keep it that way on purpose?

  • @johnritchie6775
    @johnritchie6775 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also stumbled on & I can’t remember where but if you select subject go to paths & save the path as a selection the edges are immediately more crisper sharper Etc than if you had selected subject then gone to select & mask but this method acts just as if you had used the pen tool yourself! Certainly saved me a lot of time ;) but now I can combine the two & select subject this way then go to paths save it as a selection & fingers crossed the cut out will be even better!

    Hi Colin, when I use the hair refine brush does a little better, when I use the hand tool to go over the hair edges it tends to remove the hair instead of brushing it in? What am i doing wrong?

    Pen tool is still the best way for cutouts. These AI tools are okay but you always need to manually clean up. By the time you've messed around you might as well have drawn a clean vector path.

    • @chasebros4948
      @chasebros4948 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the pen tool is excellent for objects that have a well defined edge, but not for hair and fur.

    • @clownshoe69
      @clownshoe69 ปีที่แล้ว

      The brush is best to cut out anything. The pen tool leaves hard edges which doesn't look realistic

    • @armondtanz
      @armondtanz ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes im searching AI options.
      I guess your always gunna get that chunk of area where it just cant workout.
      The quickest way by far is the cutout brush then tidy it up.
      My job was cut out pictures , i reckon ive done 1000s.
      A good tip after using cutout tool is to right click on eye area in layers and chose 'select all pixels'. You can set a feather 0.2 ish and just delete. This removes that tiny bit of halo. You can expand and contract this selection as well...
      Also make sure the area has a mask and u can go into the mask and adjust with curves (this can crunch edges) or select outline using that approach.
      This doest work for hair, but theres plenty of hacks using multiple layers and blending modes.

    I am convinced that Photoshop could also provide the better selection on the device, but I imply to Adobe that they want to force us more and more into the cloud. Probably more and more functions will only be made available via the cloud. I don't want that. And if that's the way it's going to be, I'll switch to another app.

    I've been ticking the box at the top, wasn't aware of the preferences setting. My problem is no matter which I use, the edges are never as clean as the Photoshop guru's are on TH-cam, and Select and Mask usually just makes it worse.
