As someone with this body type, I’ve also found personally that using chunkier style shoes (rather than very petite and tiny style shoes) actually makes my thighs look more in proportion. In a way I suppose I de-emphasise my wide hips by adding more visual weight at the bottom (wide leg pants and chunky shoes.) the chunky shoes also work well if you do want to wear things like skinny jeans. 😊
I'm so happy that nowadays regular and high rise jeans are available in stores. I was a teenager during the noughties and during that time you only had low rise jeans which didn't suit me at all.
This is the video I was searching for my whole life, literally never found a way to categorize my body shape but the in-between hourglass/pear makes totally sense.
@@Siriusly10I think it’s more about where the shoulder line sits. If the hips and shoulders line up, then strictly speaking it’s not a pear shape. However, having a smaller diaphragm circumference makes us look pear-shaped rather than hour-glass. This is my body type - if I put shoulder pads in, it still looks wrong as my hips and shoulders are balanced yet the curviness of my hips and my smaller diaphragm need balancing. I find jackets and cardigans particularly difficult to get right. I’ve realized that what I am striving for is an hourglass shape, so it’s all about creating that balance. So I look for clothes that don’t emphasize the hips and that make my weedy diaphragm look larger, e.g. with ruffled tops etc.
Your shape is fabulous and I find I like the way your clothes look on you better than the model they show in their adds. Which I now realize is due to your clever evaluation of what looks good on you.
As someone with the same measurements as you, I will be using the opposite advice because I love emphasizing my hips, HOWEVER, for those who do not want to do that, you explained wonderfully in this video!! ❤❤
I have wider hip area and smaller waist. I learnt with trial and error that tucking in the top/shirt is the best option for me as a 5-5.1” I wear almost every garment of my personal taste: crop tops, long tops by tucking in, high waste pants/jeans, bell bottoms, shorts which are not skin fit. I have been complimented by many people for having a good sense of fashion (not complimenting myself 😂 but people like my style and I like it myself too). I think the best tip is tucking in and wearing high waist jeans. It just gives a smart and sharp look to anyone, short or tall, skinny or curvy. Thank you for the lovely tips ❤
As a person who doesn't know much about fashion and continuously hating herself for not being good with any outfit, all I can say is that you channel is such a blessing to me. Thank you so much 💗💗 you're so majestic btw
I think I have the same body type, but I actually really like that my hips are wide. I used to only wear dark wash skinny jeans, but now I actually wear a lot of high-waisted, light wash jeans that are wide-legged, bootcut, or baggy with fun patterns and designs, and I love it. I feel like having the high-waist pants that are tight around my hips but loose as it gets lower accentuates my hips as I wear a tighter or more cropped top. Since I grew up with curvy being what is in style (particularly influenced by Kim Kardashian prime era and the fact that I'm the only thin woman in my family) I actually like to lean into the one way I could be considered curvy.
Thank you for this! Speaking as a 26 waist/ 39 hip dip girl, these tips really work. If I’ve ever felt off in outfit it’s because I’ve literally worn the specific styles you’ve advised against here. This vid goes straight to my favorites. Thank you 😄

I’m a fellow small waist and larger hip girl. I find emphasising the shoulders and feet gives a slimmer mid line of your body in between. A puff sleeve top with extra material at the shoulder makes my waist look tiny, hips look slimmer and then a chunkier shoe also diverts the gaze away from the thighs and calves and gives an overall impression of long and lean between the legs and chest.
I have the same body type, I would say it's hourglass don't think it's pear because the shoulders (0:06) are even slightly broader than the hips. Pears have small shoulders and very wide hips.
As someone with this body type and struggling to feel good in jeans, I now realized why! I never paid attention to the straight lines around the hips, it makes so much sense. Thanks a lot for all the tips!
I have a pear body shape.. I'm 💯 agree with all your wonderful suggestions. It is so helpful to know how to dress your shape, feeling empowered and confident!
Having muscular legs this tips make clothes so much more comfortable! I found myself wearing my shorts like you show on this video and I found it not only flattering but so comfortable since you have the extra fabric that makes easier to move in! I think the classic A line can apply to all kinds of clothing not only dresses and see it clearly on shorts on this video 👌

Hello Bethany! Silent follower here ☺️ Stumbled on your “how to look taller” video few years back and I have to say, you have completely given me a new form of confidence & joy in wearing clothes. I could never figured out why certain jeans and tops looked good and some didn’t. I also couldn’t find anyone on TH-cam who share the same body type as me (long torso, shorter legs, pear-ish shaped). I’ve binged watched your videos and I have to say, you have changed my wardrobe for the better! 🥹 You didn’t just share tips and tricks, you gave me confidence & knowledge. I am more comfortable with myself and the clothes I choose and wear. I’d like to say a huge THANK YOU for giving me that and EMPOWERING people to look and feel their best. ❤️ You have such talent and finesse in what you do that I’ve recommended you to all my friends to watch & follow you. Xoxo- rachel ❤️
I’m built fairly curvy (27” waist, 39” hip) and I actually love slightly low waist pants. Not super low, but an inch or three below my natural waistline. First of all it’s comfier, but I also find that it straightens my line from shoulder to hip. I have a slightly inverted triangle shape, so my shoulders are just a smidge wider than my hips, and if I wear pants that make my waist look small it only emphasizes that. So, I love a good mid-rise :)
This video is just what I needed! I am not petite but have struggled for years to find what outfits work best for me- I fall somewhere between hourglass and spoon and it's a challenge! This video clarifies so much, and your style is impeccable. Thank you!
I agree with everything except the pencil skirt, I’m almost 5,6 and being curvy pencil skirt and slightly high waisted look the best on me. But I can see petite folks may look disproportionated in a similar outfit
Beautiful on medium height to tall. Even if people are rolling their eyes inside they are 👀👀👀👀 Decades pass - it’s all the same. Ok, I also need one now
Super agree on the whiskering! I think the “curvy” jeans trend has sort of backfired in that “curvy” jeans tend to use styling strategies like whiskering, thick material, pocket placement, etc to highlight the shape- cool if you want that but I’d just like jeans that fit and aren’t a butt spotlight.
Thank you for this. I have the same body type as you and have learned some of these tips through trial and error but I learned a few new things through your video too. Don't listen to the people on the comments shaming you or saying that you're not curvy/have a different body type, they don't know what they're talking about. Having wider hips, doesn't mean you have the widest hips ever, it just means they're wider than your waist and therefore are emphasized when wearing certain types of clothing, that's literally all there is to it.
Wide hips and smaller waist is such an harmonious shape (and biological desirable), so I would love tips on how to emphasize them actually ❤ let’s celebrate our natural shape instead of hiding it.
Thankyou for being so transparent and helping us all, with similar bodies to dress well and look balanced in our clothes. Feeling more confident with our choices of what to wear and why.
You have the exact same leg shape as me 🥹 I always chose clothes that accentuated my hips by accident and that made me very self conscious because my legs looked bigger than they are, especially right after leg days and my muscles are sore and swollen, this helped me so much! Thank you
I agree with you on almost everything minus the straight leg bottoms bc it really just depends on the other clothes you pair with it! Also, I look bangin’ in a tight pencil skirt. Brings out that “hourglass” shape within my pear-ish shape:)
It's an odd thing. I thank you for your candor; it seems that there is much healing that has to take place sometimes before we can look at ourselves with enough Grace to even begin to dress ourselves well. When I was first married, I had your exact measurements at 5'1". I had such terrible insecurity about my petite frame. Blessed with a large family, I saw my body do amazing things and bring wonderful children into the world. And it is only now, at the age of 40 and many many inches away from the original set of measurements, that I am beginning to look at myself as Worthy of being beautiful and taking time to dress myself in a way that is flattering. Even with a supportive partner who could never understand why I felt the way I did about my appearance, it can be a tremendous effort to overcome the negative self-talk and body image issues that creep in from the influence of childhood trauma or just our culture in general and poison the way we perceive ourselves.
most of the time I try to balance my wide hips with my shoulders by following this rule . but some times I just like to celebrate my curves with some confidant we can do it
I have wide hips but I actually love them. I love making them stand out so I wasn't sure if I'd relate with this video but it still had a lot of good inspo. I love your style, it looks very comfy but yet feminine
My body shape is the same as yours and although i had to figure out these tips/ways by myself (before i found you), its now still nice to hear it again :) i hope this video reaches all the people who struggle with the 'right' way to dress for there body type!
I really like how you use positive words to describe your change. I like fading to the background because it’s true. You don’t want highlight the parts that you may not be as happy with if you can’t make them go away overnight. I just found you. I have a very similar body shape, so I really like this. Thank you.
I’m the same body type but not petite and I have always thought leggings do not flatter me! I find your videos so useful bc they help me understand why that is! Can you do a video on what work out/ leisure wear clothes work for fuller hips/ pear shape?
I don't have wide hips but hate light washes and yes, esp jeans with (excessive) whiskering because they definitely draw attention to the area and make it look larger. I stay far away! 😅
Love this! I started watching you because our shapes are so similar and it’s been an amazing help! You explain everything so eloquently! Thank you for your content!
I see how certain types of clothes, colours, shapes etc can make someone's figure look more 'balanced' if that's the phrase to use. In my opinion your body shape is stunning and looks absolutely beautiful.
My body type is the opposite, I have wider shoulders (inverted triangle). So I've been looking for ways to deemphasize my upper body. I'll be incorporating your tips for my top half!
I have a very similar body type. I’m not an expert stylist but I always wear high waisted jeans & noticed in photos skinny jeans don’t look too flattering at all. This video simplified and gave me the clarity I needed. Thank you!
I tried on a pair of jeans from Stradivarius the other day, they were very wide legged, almost too wide in some parts but it is the most gorgeous my legs have looked in my entire life. Not to overflatter myself but I looked like a model (even though I am average in height and weight) in casual clothing. Once I pulled the curtain and showed it to my bestie her jaw dropped to the floor! She was shook like she forgot how to speak. It looked that good!
I’ve got this too. 26” waist, 38” hips. I’ve grown rather attached to my hips and my waist so I go for things that hit right at my waist and hug my hips. Find something about your body that you love, and exaggerate that instead of only on downplaying the things you hate :)
I really like evened out proportions! Emphasize what you enjoy about your looks, regardless of what other people like. Some people like emphasizing that area, I like seeing them enjoy their looks. :) For me, I like softening the pelvis wideness and I love emphasizing the curve my relatively thin waist creates.
I have a body type with heavy hips, I pretty much struggle every day because I like to dress up. I swear this video is made for me, lol! Thank you @dearlyBethany
Full length boot cut and flare leg with super high waist, fitted at the waist, hip and thigh. The shirt style and color contrasts are spot on, but I prefer to put emphasis on a small bust instead of emphasizing the shoulders. If you're comfortable in heels, all the better to wear with longer legged pants/ jeans
I have the same body type and it’s taken me years of shopping to figure out a lot of these things on my own! Only wish I had found this sooner! Awesome tips
Thank you for the tips. Since taking the pill against health issues (hormones) my hips and legs got noticably bigger and I have trouble losing the weight. I kinda really miss my slim hips and legs days
I so appreciate this video and your vocals are calming. I have the same shape and instinct has led me to many of these same conclusions but do appreciate a larger shoe in o balance my proportions I also used to say “I’m a pear 🍐 shape” and friends said “no you’re perfect and are hourglass”. But I believe it is because I know how to dress my body!
Your thought process helped me consider how to best highlight my build, and balance out my outfits. I'm also petite with a similar hip measurement, but with longer legs. This also means that my rib cage almost sits on my hip bones, so I don't have as much of a waist, and I have broad and muscular shoulders - a very athletic build with hips. I avoid ruffles and exaggerated shoulders on top, but tucking and finding more cropped tops allows me to suggest a waist, and high rise helps me feel great! It is hard to find jeans that fit both my athletic rear and thigh, and my waist. Sailor style pants with a bit of stretch are my best friends, as well as a good tailor :)
Wow she just confirmed all the things I struggled with since I was a young teen. Im 26 now. By trial and error I know my fit. I feel like my mom never understood what I was trying to point out. Like the hip length jackets! Omg I hated them for some reason, how they look on my body obviously. Glad to have stumbled upon this video. Thank you!
personally, low rise works better for me because my hips are 41” while my waist is 28” so it emphasizes better than a high rise as those are always way too big on my waist :)
High waist jeans and man's shirts are life for me ! Also I have broad shoulders and wide hips, if I tend to gravitate to something that will soften my hips curves I welcome things that exhibit my muscular thighs. I'm into bodybuilding ;)
You’re so perfect! I love your proportions and you dress so well. And so beautiful too. Keep up the great work. Even if I’m 60 I love watching your videos! A lot of your tips are applicable even for my age bracket. More power to you❤
Do you have any tips for deemphasizing the top half? I have a very large chest and relatively straight hips and want to balance those proportions more! Also, I'd love to see a video about fall/winter layering (especially in dresses for climates that aren't too cold)! It's getting chilly on the west coast and as a southerner I have no idea what to do haha!
Darker solid tops instead of flower print, stripes etc, lighter or brightly colored or patterned skinny or very wide legged jeans/ pants, full length. The idea is to bring attention to the lower half of your body if you want to draw a little away from the appearance of the bust and emphasize your hips
Pretty much the opposite patterns, more bright color on the lower half ,v necks, scoop necks, henleys, schals that hang down assymetrically, really really longcardigans or to the waist, smoking jackets, single breasted jackets pref 1 or 3 buttons. Things that make that sektion look larger unless you wear a long cardigan on top and a long necklace is polonecks. But it also depends on what you feel is large to me personally anything under F/G cup is fairly standard and has become more usual where as I, J,K,L,M is basically pain because there are a lot less decent bra’s out there. What sort of bra you wear also has a huge effect and depending on your size if you are H and under there are some really good sportsbras out there which might be a good option to alternate with.
Also, the whisking on the pants near the hips is good to bring out the hips. For summer time there shirts with whisking. There are linen fabrics, shorts designed with wider legs that help bring attention to the hips as well

I can see that. Kind of similar to using puffed sleeves or shoulders to even the proportions of the hips. 🤗
Same body type here, and I concur with the chunky shoe tactic whether it’s a platform heel or a sneaker with a thicker sole🤗
Yes! Although I’m not petite (5’5) I have the same body type, and non-chunky shoes just look wrong on me

I agree with you on almost everything minus the straight leg bottoms bc it really just depends on the other clothes you pair with it! Also, I look bangin’ in a tight pencil skirt. Brings out that “hourglass” shape within my pear-ish shape:)
*tight leg bottoms, not straight leg. Either way I think people will know what I meant lol
These videos are so comprehensive and helpful bethany I can always have these tips when I'm shopping and that helps a lot with my confidence now ❤️
So glad they are helpful, friend!
I really like how you use positive words to describe your change. I like fading to the background because it’s true. You don’t want highlight the parts that you may not be as happy with if you can’t make them go away overnight. I just found you. I have a very similar body shape, so I really like this. Thank you.
Thank you, so happy to have you here!
I’m the same body type but not petite and I have always thought leggings do not flatter me! I find your videos so useful bc they help me understand why that is! Can you do a video on what work out/ leisure wear clothes work for fuller hips/ pear shape?
Your tips over the last two years have changed my life. Thank you!
I don't really think these are wide hips 😄 I have them and they're truly Wide 🙈
Ok I’m like what hips lol
Exactly 😂
This is more like wide thighs, not hips. But im still gonna like since im learning 😊
If her hips are proportionally the widest part of her body, then yes she does have wide hips.
@@daviddavitha for most women the hips are the widest part of their body...reproductive reasons ya know.
You are my body twin and my style guru.
I’ve had the same problem my whole life being inbetween the pear shape and the hourglass! Thank you so much for making this video!
I don't have wide hips but hate light washes and yes, esp jeans with (excessive) whiskering because they definitely draw attention to the area and make it look larger. I stay far away! 😅
The moment I found your channel was the best moment of my life 😭😭💗💗 love u
Oh wow! ❤️❤️❤️ much love
Love this! I started watching you because our shapes are so similar and it’s been an amazing help! You explain everything so eloquently! Thank you for your content!
Thank you for all of the tips! Lately, I have not been feeling very pretty lately, and need a full body makeover to boost my confidence.
So happy I came across this video. Really helped a lot with shopping for more pear shape body flattering pieces.
Everything. Me too... somewhere between pear and hour glass.. thighs muscular. Small waist, curvy bottom
I see how certain types of clothes, colours, shapes etc can make someone's figure look more 'balanced' if that's the phrase to use. In my opinion your body shape is stunning and looks absolutely beautiful.
Watch her masterclass, you won't regret it!! Seriously wonderful!
Thanks Maria! So thrilled you loved it! 🤗👏
My body type is the opposite, I have wider shoulders (inverted triangle). So I've been looking for ways to deemphasize my upper body. I'll be incorporating your tips for my top half!
short, sweet and on point! thanks for the video, it really summs up important things.
My hips are so wide and i am so curvy. The outfit i wore today really brought them alive.
Thanks for sharing Bethany. Prayed for you and Zack this evening.
I’m also 5’1” with the same body type shape. Your videos have helped me so much.
I have the same body shape as you, in between pear and hour glass. I’m loving this video!!!
I love this video! My body shape is just like yours. Thank you for summarize all this tips 🤩
I love these tips and was shocked that I unconsciously have been using several of them already to style my curves best!!
Me, who has heavy thighs, really needed this video. Thanks a lot, Bethany ❤️
Voll das schöne Video🥰 Man merkt wie glücklich du über die alltäglichen Dinge bist
I have never understood why pencil skirts aren't the most flattering on me until I started watching your videos. Thank you.
I finally found someone with my body shape. I don’t know how to style my clothes and look forward to learning from you 💕
Thank you 🙌 I feel like all videos are either focused only on plus size, or super skinny.... this video was so helpful! Hope you do more!!
Very helpful tips. Thank you! So glad that skinny jeans and low waist bottoms aren't so trendy anymore.
finally someone who has hips like me !! Ive become ashamed on my body, I think because my family points it out so much, it made me insecure of it
Your hips are not curvy, they're normal. Women have wider pelvic girdles than men so they can give birth, so normally hips are supposed to be wide.
Finally someone said this🥴thats what its staright she doesn’t have pear or hourglass shape🙄
You aren’t the best model for this video 😅
She’s white people curvy.
I have the same body type and it’s taken me years of shopping to figure out a lot of these things on my own! Only wish I had found this sooner! Awesome tips
as someone with narrow hips, I'm taking notes on all the things i should DO ^_^
Hey! Narrow hips here, too. I'm also taking notes 😄👖
Have never considered those lines on distressed jeans before, but you are spot on. Great tip!
Thank you for the tips. Since taking the pill against health issues (hormones) my hips and legs got noticably bigger and I have trouble losing the weight. I kinda really miss my slim hips and legs days
this video is definitely for me. thank you!!
I so appreciate this video and your vocals are calming. I have the same shape and instinct has led me to many of these same conclusions but do appreciate a larger shoe in o balance my proportions
I also used to say “I’m a pear 🍐 shape” and friends said “no you’re perfect and are hourglass”. But I believe it is because I know how to dress my body!
Now, I understand why I was most of the time uncomfortable in my. (so loved) light wash jeans. Thank you.
The wide leg Everlane trousers look great! Bought them. Thank you.
Like how she is to the point - short video with lots of helpful info.
You are perfect the way you are . We can be our worst critic, I think you always look great 😊
Your thought process helped me consider how to best highlight my build, and balance out my outfits.
But curvy is beautiful on you, Bethany! My teen is curvy and I’m learning a lot here for her in case she would like more of a balance.
Your voice is so calm, soothing and relaxing. I could listen to u all day. You should make some meditation voiceovers. 🙂
Thank you!
So nice to find someone with my body type giving some advice!
Finally someone who addresses body shapes with heavier bum thigh areas. I found this soooo helpful.
personally, low rise works better for me because my hips are 41” while my waist is 28” so it emphasizes better than a high rise as those are always way too big on my waist :)
High waist jeans and man's shirts are life for me ! Also I have broad shoulders and wide hips, if I tend to gravitate to something that will soften my hips curves I welcome things that exhibit my muscular thighs. I'm into bodybuilding ;)
Sending love your way Bethany ❤
idk why, but I’ve felt your last few videos have been less upbeat than usual, and I just hope you’re ok.
Aw thanks so much for your care and perceptiveness 🙏 something did happen a couple weeks ago and I plan to fill you all in soon.
@@Dearlybethany I’m so sorry lovely; I hope things pick back up again soon ❤️❤️❤️
You’re so perfect! I love your proportions and you dress so well. And so beautiful too. Keep up the great work. Even if I’m 60 I love watching your videos! A lot of your tips are applicable even for my age bracket. More power to you❤
Lol this explains why I love crop tops or very long jackets. great video!
Curvy hips? Where?
That's what I'm saying...
Lollll facts
😂 true
Girl it’s 2023! Hips are in!! I say emphasize them all you want:)
There are linen fabrics, shorts designed with wider legs that help bring attention to the hips as well
I’m 5.4’ and I’ve same body shape (composition) and sometimes It is kind of frustrating trying to dress up 😂
I’m so thankful for your videos!!!!❤
