  • Dr. Ernest Nagel gives a 1964 talk in which he argues that there is no incompatibility between free will and causal determinism. He works through a number of common objections to the compatibility human agency and determinism and defends against misconceptions of determinism by drawing on examples from physics. The talk is accessible to a general audience interested in philosophy of action, challenges to the liberal ideology of agency, and the age-old question of the meaning of free will.
This talk was given in 1964 by Dr. Ernest Nagel at the American University, Washington D.C. The audio has been slightly edited.

Would anyone be so kind as to sum up Nagel's position on free will for me? Please? I found this talk almost impossible to sit through.

I'm listening now and will probably add more comments.
So far, yes to the point there is a difference between.
    1) Causal determinism
    and
    2) Predictive determinism
Also yes the variables could be anything. As long as there is only
one possible future given the initial state of the variables, that's causal determinism.
