We Found Food in a CHURCH Dumpster! Plus More Behind Retail Shops

- Hi y'all and welcome back to another dumpster diving video! We woke up early and went diving behind some of our favorite retail shops. Lately we have been checking a local church's dumpster, too, and found 29 bags of unopened popcorn thrown away. I couldn't believe it! We have found board games and recreational items here, too. That is a new one that we never thought to check, so we will be adding church's to the list of businesses to dive at!

They throw it away because they can be sued. It's crazy. I know this because I use to work at an organization that was charity based. If we put anything on the shelves that was past the date, we got in trouble from the city that did our license. It was so frustrating. We would put it in the trash can in a clear wrapped bag. Then make sure we were "overheard" talking about the good food in the trash. A certain person would come and dumpster dive and retrieve the wrapped food that night. Pretty much right after we put it in the trash. Then they would take it and hand it out at the local homeless area. The was our routine for nearly 6 years that I was there. It was so frustrating but we didn't want to loose our license.
It sounds crazy but alot of times people will donate expired foods to a church thinking they can give it away at their food giveaways but they can't because it's expired. Someone donated expired canned foods to our church, I took it to the homeless shelter, they said they couldn't take it because it had expired. Took it to one of the blessings boxes, they had a sign that said no expired foods excepted. It seems everyone is afraid of the negatively on social media and lawsuits. Unopened foods can be used beyond their expiration date.
That is so sad. “Expiration” dates aren’t real and it’s disappointing that the idea is preventing people from getting food they need. Thankfully the free pantry I donate to does not have restrictions like that.
I don't think food that's a couple of days or a couple of weeks out of date isn't safe to eat but I know with shelters they have to say no to out of date food because people use shelters as a glorified dumpster and donate food that 1+ years past its expiration date. Also, while it can last past the expiration date if kept in ideal conditions (cool dark place) and they can't guarantee it wasn't in someone's trunk in the summer heat for a week.
All you have to do is ask Google and they will give you the most accurate information they have. I know at my house, we use canned goods for 2 years past the expiration date, depending on what it is, so some people throw away way too much because they're uneducated on what you can do with it after it expires.
@@breafkast the thing is in most cases these are not 'expiration dates' they are only 'best by' dates and those cans can be good for at least a couple more years.
When I have volunteered at the food pantry they cannot give it away but they will leave it in a box so people are able to take it if the expiration date is passed

Love it when I come on here and see you two ,some good finds today ,this morning I see something on someone's page ,it was a post that read "when a human dies they write a last will and testament for belongings to go to ,and wonder if dogs that have passed theirs would go something like this give my warm comfy bed my toys and leash ,to another poor dog in rescue who like me was unhappy until I found my humans that loved me ,give another dog a warm lap sofa good food this is my only way of saying I loved you as well " made a few tears for me I know that but makes you think doesn't it .🐕x
Carol from one furr baby mum to another ❤ 😍 💕 that was really beautiful and yes I allso did what your truly beautiful message from our extra precious baby's who have sadly gone over the rainbow 🌈 Bridge 🌉 I have let my Little Maid ❤ A total different breed but needed to find a new home 🏡 at so many months old, and her first mum sadly past away only aged 59 during the 2nd dam lockdown, so sadly Pollyanna-Maive 😥 never got to see and show her mummy not only how she had grown but allso as well just how happy she was and hugely a part of our family and now very much settled in..I will never ever forget her goodbye hug and what she said to me, and how happy she was to know that polly really was going to an extra special new home, with a family who already loved 😍 her, and that she could see just how she had really truly felt that she was already accepted us into her love already..X oh my god every single day I always thank her very first mum, for bringing her into our lives, and letting us have her..X
I'm so glad you grabbed those Vans! I kept talking to the television... get the shoes, get the shoes LOL. I wash my Vans in the washer all the time, just let them air dry.
I dumpster dive almost every night. I seldom find anything at the hardware store, but, the furniture store is a different story. It's amazing what I find there.
I guess I need to check out our furniture stores. Thank you for the tip.
I ran into a housing insecure person at a retail smoothie shop's dumpster. He said you never know what you're gonna find, every day is different. It's true, it's like a treasure hunt. There's a produce store nearby - every day they put a little bit in their compost bin, by the end of the week it's 100% full. Last time I looked there were dozens and dozens of cherries in the dumpster 😐 Too heavy to haul.
I Love Thrift stores dumpsters!! I have made quite a bit from what I have found there!
Sometimes it shocks me the amount of Very Valuable things they throw out, things they could make money themselves on! Especially when they are non profits, making money for charitable organizations!!

Making the world a better place 🤩🥰and smiling while ya do it 👍i went to a dumpster behind a doctors office they were remodeling last week to get boxes that i saw and needed for moving and right there underneath were bags of unopened extension cords 🤷♀️ we can all do our part regarding waste ! Btw gotta say in a weird way I've grieved for Pilgrim even tho I never met him but these first few without him are ☹️so used to seeing him❣️maybe 1 day you guys will feel ready to rescue ..in the meantime nice donations and as always good video 🙌
That was awesome finding tools! They come in handy and also sell well at garage sales!
It’s a best by/sell by date, not an expiration date. Most things will stay good to eat long past the BB/SB date. If you are storing hints at home items stay fresh longest one a cool, dark place - especially canned food.
With the possible food shortages I've seen a couple of news reports explaining that expiration dates don't mean what people think they do.

Great finds today Alex, and Kelly. If you find an old paint roller you can take the round part you paint with off. Then you attach it to a long pole, and you can use the metal piece to move boxes and bags around the dumpster. You also use it in that one dumpster that has a lock on one end, but the lid is part way up, you have the long pole, so you can reach things from the other side. Have a great day my friends ❤🙂.

Non-profits (churches) are required to follow FDA laws. That's why the popcorn was tossed. Yet I agree with you that it's such a waste.

I worked for goodwill. When donations was closed or not taking donations people would leave stuff around the building because they were set on getting rid of stuff.
@Nadie It depends on the person, some like my boss would throw it all out to punish them but I and some few would sort it. If I had been the donator, I would have felt the same driving out and waiting.

I used to be a construction worker and a mechanic and there's all kinds of fun words in the English language you can use a caulking gun inside a toilet is a ballcock what drains the water out of your radiator is called the petcock and for some reason where the pilot sits in an airplane is the cockpit😋

Our local Salvation Army in Minnesota hands out expired food every day to anyone - due to Covid the volunteers put items in plastic bags and give to anyone that way so whatever you don’t like is just put in the “blessing pantry” boxes around town 👍🏻

Enjoyed watching the variety of Dumpster finds you came across! I agree, those things in an odd place look like Donations!🤔 The Hoses can be spliced with New Nozzles, Connectors, etc and Used more! My Dad cut strips out of hose to hold up new Trees on stakes that could fall over when newly planted! You and Alex are a Great Pair with Similar picks at the Dumpster, That Works! 😄👍🤔😃

I don’t know if you guys are thinking of another furbaby. There are 4,000 Beagles that have been rescued from a facility that breed them for research facilities. They have never had love or been out to smell grass. They will all be checked spayed and neutered before adoption. Because they have been kept in groups the rescue shelter advise adopting 2 so they are less stressed. We have several pets and can’t take on another. It’s just a thought. I know the loss is great and a piece of your heart is gone. You guys are such good pet parents please consider checking into adopting a Beagle

I have been so busy looking up & pricing. So far I have looked up about 70 stuffed animals cause they are Neo Pets & Beanie Babies found a few worth more than a few dollars. Yea. I am trying to find a fair place to sell some 33 vinyl albums 2 are worth over $100 they are by New Order. It is very time consuming separating & taking pictures also. I have never sold anywhere but Marketplace on Facebook. But Love watching you guys & you making a great couple\. Peace

When you were talking about workout videos being a thing of the past it reminded me of something. When I was in college (1983-84 or so) my friends and I tried the Jane Fonda workout! Feel the Burn! Ugh, that was tough! PS back in the day we’d use white shoe polish on dirty canvas shoes.

In most cases, the expiration date is an “I gotcha date” so you throw away the out of date, but still good food, and rebuy it. You two are doing a great job helping others, that includes everyone living there by keeping useable items out of the landfill. In Canada, they have a building at the convince center where people can leave their good “trash” for others to take at no cost. I wish we had that in the states. If businesses where charged for dumping good items, especially food and the ones they damage to prevent them from being salvaged, they would probably change their policies. We are definitely in a time of need, and I pray it doesn’t, that will probably get worse before it gets better. We all need to help each other.🤗💕
As a child, me and my sibling went hungry sometimes! I even to this day will drink milk that is expired!! Dry and canned foods that "say" expired, can still be eaten long after expired! Come on people, this country is on its way to much harder times, I am 63 years old and have never gotten sick from expired foods! We are so spoiled in this country instead of being greatful. Donate, don't throw out!

please remember that not everyone is computer friendly, so we depend on DVD'S, VHS, especially because we are old.
If you have a garden those videos / games are good to hang in the garden to deter pests.

I scored a Monster size Igloo Cooler from the Wally. It was right on top of the dumpster but about 8 ft. high . I scaled up like a Ninja, to my own surprise. The Cooler was white and looked like it had been used as a bench or step in the back room. But it is perfect on the inside, like it had never been opened, not a smell at all.

We keep track of the schedules, but sometimes they throw us a curve ball and pick it up on an off day 😅 Mainly going on the weekends is best since most trash days are weekdays!

Just bought tomato cup of soup today at f.dollar. Never heard of that! Was in sale. Noticed later exp. date June 22. (Didn't bother me at all!) My church gives out those exact bags ,w.expired food. Gotta smell and taste.
