Well it's not like the deepfake technology was commonplace when that movie was in production. It's only in the last year or so that it's reached this level of quality.

Seems to me like shadow and light heavily affect when the facial replacement software works. In the scenes where his face was dramatically shaded, Arnolds face stayed in place.
It's called taking shortcuts. They left Arnolds head from the back but we know it. If he talked like sly then we might better accept it.

You guys are REALLY close! Once the software can handle all angles, it will be perfect. Some angles are tricky because of the change to the contours of the face in 3D, and that requires adding and subtracting from the background (and a LOT of CPU work).

It's one of my Favorite movies.

It was released the same day as Jurassic Park. It’s a brilliant film by McTiernan; one of Arnie’s best roles.
That movie in my Top 5! Last Action Hero is one of the best scripts ever! And ONLY Schwarzenegger could play that role, because he's the number 1 action hero of all times!

I think it's amazing how the algorithm used to do this can accommodate for lighting and shadows nearly perfectly without glitching all over the place like what happens a lot with GANs.

That may be true, bit for some reason this channels deepfakes look much better and more natural than others I've seen. The video quality is also really HQ so it's much harder to hide mistakes.

@@Ritefita Yeah, but depending on the dataset it adds shades or even wholesale inserts the new actor's expression depending on the algorithm. In this case, it kept Stallone "dead". It's honestly a somewhat creepier effect then the original in my opinion.

Playing optimist here: The credibility of sources will probably just become more important. You have to remember, with enough work and man hours (and money - which they have) _governments_ have been able to do this kind of thing for a long time now.
