Helpful tip for those interested in buying a Yashica Electro 35: All of the versions of this camera use the old Cadmium Sulphide light meters-many of which are either no longer working or have degraded to being a few stops off-except for the GL version which uses the far superior Silicon Photodiode meter. Added features of the GL: increases film speed to 1600 AND uses a 40mm 1.7 instead of the 45mm used on the other versions. Yashica also moved the light meter to the front of the lens allowing the use of filters to be automatically accounted for without having to manually adjust exposure to compensate. Correction: The above also applies to the GX version except it only goes to 800 ASA.
A trick for backlit situations is to set it to flash, which sets the shutter to 1/30th. you can choose your appature from there using a light meter app/ or light meter if you have one. The light seals on this are also really easy to fix using self-adheasive window insulation. This camera is a beast.
Helpful tip, and by no means a long-term solution or something that can replace a legit CLA with light seal replacements, but if you just snag some small to medium black yarn from a hobby store, and cut to length using your seal gaps as a guide, and slowly work it in there while keeping it as taut as possible, might actually fix your light leak issues. Depending on how much is left of your seals, and dirt and grime build-up you may have to clean the channels out a bit, but it can work quite well for clearing up those light leaks, and tightening up that 'give' you displayed in your camera back. You can even take a small pointed metal tool, such as the pointed end of a spanner, and work a small hole into the yarn in the area around the switch which resets your frame counter (located in most of the original line models just to the right and down from one of the screws that hold on your top cover, most of the time if you draw a straight line down from your stamped serial number on the top cover, you can find it quite easily,) so you don't lose functionality there. It's simple, takes very little time, costs next to nothing, and really does work. I've used this method on my backup GSN, and it has worked a treat for me. Maybe that little bit of advice can give someone a little something to belay a full-fledged CLA on their Electro 35. And if it's a mechanical issue you're dealing with (with regard to repairing,) a lot of basic camera maintenance and repair can be performed rather easily, with the exception of the POD or 'Pad of Death' issue, which I've gone into a little bit on one of my replies in this feed already. It's when the electronics fail that you really start to run into issues that can make your camera a beautiful-looking brick. My preferred Electro is the GX, with a speedy 40mm f1.7 Color-Yashinon DX lens. It was I believe the last in the line of Electros, and is one of my mainstays for street photography,
You could adjust exposure by adjusting the film speed setting. In other words if you need 2 stop negative compensation, with 100 film, change the speed to 400. The exposure system will let in less light. Alternatively use a ND filter because the metering isn't TTL. Kind of sucks they didn't include exposure compensation it at least a backlight button.
True. That trick can be applied to any camera where you have control over picking asa speed. But yes becomes annoying and sometimes to slow to use in situations like you mentioned.
The other extremely common (virtually all) issue with this camera is the Pad of Death problem. Its a small pad of foam that disintegrates leading to unreliable shutter speed issues. lots of info on net on how to fix it.
A little late responding... just saw this. I had a similar issue with light leaks. I placed black wool yarn in the upper and lower grooves (3.5 oz/100 g), no adhesive, just pushed it in; I also placed Black Gaffers tape on left and right vertical seams (a lazy way of sealing, and much easier)
@@graham_white …and it won’t leave adhesive when you remove it. My problem is that I’m a bit OCD and I’m all about the “esthetics” as well as the functional. So I’m having a custom leather cover made to help with seals and to hide the tape.
I have the GT and GSN versions the GT from 1969 has a broken film advance lever but the 1974 GSN appears to be in decent shape but I have not put a battery in it. I read about something called “The pad of death” and now I’m nervous lol.

Light seals have to be replaced in the backdoor where it opens, easy fix (in case you don’t know already). Probably that’s the side you turn up when you make vertical shots. Nice video, lovely camera. Once had the GX, great lenses.
Yeah I didn't even check light seals before I put my 2nd roll in, just assumed it was all from opening the back door while film was out. But yeah replaced the light seals and that was the issue. Thanks!
I’ve never heard of them being radioactive unless there is a specific year and model they did that. You would have to do a deep dive but I’m 90% sure they aren’t
Something you can do to compensate the exposure is to use the ASA. That way in back light, just go down from 400ASA to 200ASA or 100ASA for example. Simple and easy. Cheers and good shooting 👍

It’s a fixed lens. It can be disassembled to an extent to repairs but I highly discourage anyone from doing that since there are so many moving parts packed into a tight space
I like the viewfinder effects you implemented in your video. This was my first camera and used it in the early 80s while taking a photo class in college. Used it for a few years but unfortunately, someone broke into my car and stole it. I still have photos from this camera. At the time I didn't appreciate that camera cuz everyone else in class had SLR cameras with interchangeable lenses. I always remember my instructor talking about his Leica, but at the time I couldn't understand why it was such a good camera cuz it looked old. Haahahaaa!

It's worth investing in another one though for sure. haha, you can do a lot with a rangefinder, the limitations of not switching lenses honestly can help you focus on what your shooting instead of what way you should shoot it. Lieca's are great, but there is a little to much hype around them.

@@graham_white They do seem to be a bit less common but are very reliable since there are practically no electronics. There is also a F 1.4 version which is very rare and the fastest lens ever put on a fixed lens rangefinder.
Can I use this without batteries? It’s because I don’t have the battery cover and because I really want it to work because it’s my grandfather’s camera and it was a lot of sentimental value to me, the shutter does work, thank you!
I would have to look but I am pretty sure without battery the shutter automatically fires at 1/90 of a second. so technically you can it just requires a lot of exposure knowledge and compensation. otherwise you can try taping the battery in but not sure that would work because of the contact. I recommend looking for the part on eBay. even if you by a trashed parts body it might only cost you $10 and you could probably resell for close to that after you take the battery cover.
NoMonty you can buy a battery cover on eBay for around $6. Most of the time the copper connector to make the contact is corroded out. You can clean it up with baking soda and cap the battery with tin foil. Or Buy a thin piece of copper sheet at a hobby store and cut into a circle and with a tiny screw attach to the plastic insulator. Also, if you you develop your first roll and pictures come out Terrible or not at all, look up “Pad of death” on TH-cam. You will learn about how to fix the shutter mechanism. All the best
Another model does have Hot Shoe .. I think GSN .. and GTN have hot shoe It is a camera that can be fixed if necessary. And it also does worth fixing. It is good old japanese electronics.. The best feature of this camera is probably how it delivers the power to the light meter. The metering works perfectly regardless of little voltage variations. (adapting nonoriginal battery or running out battery..) Come on light seal .. is very standard restoration in every camera.. That should not be seen as a problem.
Light sales a basic and a roomie mistake. That are repairable for the most part but by no means as easy as other models from my experience. Especially since the electronics are required. I also have one with fungus between the 2 glued elements which is basically impossible to repair and be worth the cost
In film shooting I tend to set my film speed to half of the film manufacturer’s rating. It gives you better headroom in the shadows. Definitely need to replace any light seals in older cameras. Otherwise, it’s an excellent camera with an extremely sharp lens. I would love to have that lens on my digital DSLR.
Ya everything except slide is usually a good idea to do so, and easy to recover if you change your mind. Ha I would love to adapt a lot of these older fixed lenses to modern cameras. Can’t replicate these looks
I just go the Electro 35, but the manual focus confuses so much, how can you tell that what you're shooting is on focus, I tried controlling focus but it looks the same, I couldn't see any difference.
basically you have your main image and a "ghost image" which is the yellow shape in the viewfinder. you want to line up the two images and that's now you make sure the image is in focus. alternatively you can just use the distance markings on the lens and put it according to how far away your subject is but that is obviously not as reliable. is your focus patch perhaps faded away? I have another video on how to focus with 35mm cameras and I go over rangefinders specifically the electra.
love the all black. haven't ran into one yet. Yeah most of them seem to have shutter issues when I find them and need a lot of cleaning. luckily this one was kept in its leather case so it was in great shape

If I remember correctly the only thing that lights up is the arrows on the bottom for under or over exposed. But that may depend on which model you have. Look through the viewfinder and look at something really dark and then really bright and see if your needle changes for exposure. Or hold your hand over the lens and press the shutter it should trigger a longer exposure if the battery is powering the camera.

Saw a video using a chap stick tube and wire to make a battery holder. Used an old spring I found lying around instead of wire. Four LR44 batteries work fine with it. Just search on TH-cam.
When you were talking about the film not winding all the way back into the canister, I've found that on my camera too. I believe it's to do with the take up spool bending the film at such an angle that when you rewind it, it catches on the film pressure plate. For me this happens every single time with this camera and isn't so much of a big deal if you're carful rewinding the film. Great video man, I also really enjoyed your lab-box video. @Graham White you think it'd be obvious but it isn't to most who don't do it for a living or hobby. A lot of people buy cameras as such and thrash then ridicule them for being decades old without proper care or service. A lot of work has to go into these cameras with tools and parts only Yashica had access to. Any vintage camera you wanna get a parts camera for just to be safe because accidents can definitely occur. A lot of photographers tend to be stupid consumers especially today.

You can have some manual control by manipulating the ASA dial atop the camera which is calibrated in one third stop increments.
Hmmm that is a good work around. Although a little awkward I’m sure until you get used to it.

Another great rangefinder is the older all mechanical Yashica Lynx line of rangefinders. The battery only controls the meter.

I observe that this lens push the colors to green and yelow tons!. This a problem of the lens or not?!.
Don’t believe so. Film in general tends to push that. Portra tends to be more yellow and Fuji tends to be more green.

Lolol. Some are much worse than others depending on the groove they have for seals which helps a lot.
Ive got the yashica electro m5 its rare i select apature and film spead and thats about it and it uses 4lr44 batteries from the factory

The focusing 'diamond' is much smaller than illustrated in this vid. Not so bad if you have perfect eyesight, but older people and spectacle wearers (like me) tend to struggle,

Saw a video using a chap stick tube and wire to make a battery holder. Used an old spring I found lying around instead of wire. Four LR44 batteries work fine with it. Just search on TH-cam.

This camera was not reliable.
When you were talking about the film not winding all the way back into the canister, I've found that on my camera too. I believe it's to do with the take up spool bending the film at such an angle that when you rewind it, it catches on the film pressure plate. For me this happens every single time with this camera and isn't so much of a big deal if you're carful rewinding the film. Great video man, I also really enjoyed your lab-box video.

@Graham White you think it'd be obvious but it isn't to most who don't do it for a living or hobby. A lot of people buy cameras as such and thrash then ridicule them for being decades old without proper care or service. A lot of work has to go into these cameras with tools and parts only Yashica had access to. Any vintage camera you wanna get a parts camera for just to be safe because accidents can definitely occur. A lot of photographers tend to be stupid consumers especially today.
