Dude I found an Electro 35 in my grandpa's closet after he died and didn't touch it for like 15 years...just pulled it out a couple months ago and got it CLA'd. Now it's like my pride and joy and has sentimental value. Love it.

I bought a Yashica Lynx 5000e for 5$ at goodwill and it shoots incredibly sharp images. They used to market these fixed lens Japanese cameras “buy a lens get the body for free” because they put a lot of development into the lenses and made the whole system cheap by making the lenses fixed. You can fix your light leaks by getting some cotton yarn from michaels or some fabric store like that and putting in place if the old foam using pliobond adhesive to hold it in place. For the hinge area some adhesive backed black felt worked great. I think after yarn and felt I have about 11$ invested in my yashica.

@@BadFlashes you just need to scrape out the old dead foam and then of courser the yarn and felt needs to be black. it's a pretty easy job and saves you from having to spend more than the camera cost to CLA it haha

My method of light seals is a lot quicker and easier for a beginner, though not as effective long term. I use cloth sports tape and put 1/4” wide strip along the light seal area on the body or door however you can stop the light. This will work great until the tape dries out after about 1-2 years

I got two 35's recently. The first was a parts camera that I removed the lens from and made an adapter for a Sony NEX mount and the second is a fully working GTN. It took a few rolls though it, but this seems like a camera I just have to 'trust' .. there is no indication of what shutter speed it's going to shoot at only the yellow light if its going to be under 1/60th of a second. These camera's also suffer from what is known as the 'pad of death' so every time I wind on, I'm listening for the 'thunk' -- it's so weird you would think that hearing that would be a bad thing, but it actually means the shutter is working! I've been super impressed at the quality of the pictures this camera takes. The lens is amazing and if you still have your busted camera Caleb, I would look into adapting it to a full frame digital camera for sure!

After using point and shoots I wanted a bit more serious camera, and the electro 35 was a great upgrade, I'd fully recommend it to beginners. It's cheap, (beautiful) and easy to use, but now I want to upgrade again to an slr with fully manual mode, which I might not have had the guts to do if not for the experience and thirst for more control thanks to the yashica. Also I only noticed that the long shutter thing was indeed a bit weird when I had my friend take a photo, he did press the button but no photo came up, I guess he couldn't tell how to press down enough to get that pic, that is truly tricky as you said. Btw you have very fun videos I enjoy the lighthearted tone they have! (:

Some cameras, you want them to be good... but they just aren't and are never going to be. Let them go. And I'm with you on the shutter thing. I had an EOS1n that had a spongey shutter button that I hated every time I touched it. I ended up getting a different 1n.

The meter In the camera is really cool, it allows light in until the film is perfectly exposed. Or it should anyway. I had one 10ish years ago and it took stunning pictures when I didn’t really know what I was doing. It actually set me up for disappointment when I got a manual slr because the electro did the heavy lifting and I learned I didn’t really get exposure. I still think the electro is a great camera and the lens and meter more than make up for the non Leica quality.

@@BadFlashes the pictures are crisp and sharp, it has a 45mm f/1.8 Hexanon lense. A decent sized Viewfinder with the focusing system inlayed in it.The photos sometimes rival my Minolta XG-M. Only thing that I don't parents like about it is that 85% of the settings are around the lense, like Aperture is expected, but the shutter speed, self timer are on there as well.
