  • MENSA IQ TEST Questions + Practice Problems
    This video is all about my experience with the Mensa admission test. Specifically, the Culture Fair test. I first did the Mensa IQ test online for practice and some Mensa brain training. Then I visited a local testing center for the official exam. Afterwards I walk you through IQ test questions and answers that were very similar to what I saw on the real test. As well as a Mensa brain teaser or two!
    Not sure if I'm a Mensa genius or if I'll earn that coveted Mensa card, but it was a truly fun and interesting experience. I've never taken an IQ Test before, and I'm excited to share my first time with all of you. I discuss my reasons for taking the test, my expectations, and my initial reactions immediately after leaving the testing center.
    I also explain 3 different types of problems that were on the Culture Fair IQ test: Odd Item Out, Sequential, and Relationships Between Data. Can't wait to see my Mensa IQ test results!

    Its cool you mentioned putting Mensa on your resume. Lots of Mensans wont do it, because they think it looks arrogant. I've always put it on, and the response is always positive. I think it helps you stand out. And Surprise! Most employers value intelligence.

      The problem isn't that we "think" it looks arrogant, it does, for people with lower IQ. (From our own experiences). Because people with lower IQ do consider that you don't do anything productive with your IQ, and have to use it as kind of "proof" that; "Hey, I'm smart, look at me", and kind of brag about it, even tho that's not the intent of putting it on your resume. People with lower IQ often don't appreciate people with higher IQ, cause humans normally seek comfort of knowing that people are "dumber" than us.
      Would have phrased this much better, but my english isn't my 1st language.

    7:45 The odd item out samples are terrible:
    fruits:
    - You can strike the eggplant, as its not sweet *(but its a fruit as well!)* In fact it is a Berry (!!!)
    - You can strike the Strawberries because they are not a fruit
    - You can strike the grapes since its more than one
    - You can strike the melon since its a cut piece
    Stars and light:
    - You can strike the moon beeing the only object not glowing inherently
    - You can strike the light beeing an manmade object
    - you can strike the stars as its multiple objects
    Animals:
    - You can strike the fish beeing the only animal "breathing" water and for beeing the only animal without legs
    - you can strike the butterfly beeing the only animal without internal skeleton
    - You can strike the swan for beeing the only one to have feathers

      Thanks Julian for offering another perspective! Those problems are ones that I found online to illustrate the style of problems that I saw. Anything free online is not going to be the best or highest quality; it's just a sample. Typically when you pay to take an official test, the quality of questions are much better, but you obviously can't legally or morally share the exact questions that you found on the Mensa test or any other copyrighted IQ test.

    • @bechti44
      @bechti44 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SharpCookie Yes, thats right, the free material unfortunately often is not good. On an online test (for 25 bucks grrr) I scored 137 which is quite unlikely I think.
      I am currently preparing to attend the Mensa test after the little free pre test on the mensa page suggested that I am close and might even get there with training.
      I will draw every card I can. Doing more sports, practising, quitting Smoking Pot (for the time beeing) and researching Neuroscience on how to support my Brain (such as drinking water sweetened with Glucose rather than sugar during the test)
      Have you found that practising helps?

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bechti44 I've coached many students before they take school exams and SAT's / ACT's. I definitely recommend not letting your blood sugar drop, so always bring snacks and water with you. Exercising is so important because the brain is an organ, so when your body is in shape, all your organs function better, including the brain. They've even done studies to show that the brains of people that are obese do not function as well for this reason, so anything to improve your physical health will also improve your mental health. Also, great job on quitting pot! I find that it slows down mental processes. And I wouldn't spend any money on online tests---I find that they're mostly scams. Good luck with everything!

      It's a measure of intuition so you should be able to pick the correct one without much thought.
      Just to explain one, there is a strong implication as to the lightbulb being the odd one out. Are stars and the sun not very similar from different perspectives? Is that the true representation of the moon, sun or stars? There is a very strong underlying implication that this is to do with objects we see, looking at the sky from the Earth, as represented throughout history, culture and our own perceptions, and not to do with numbers or sources of light or man made objects.
      There are very similar trends throughout the other questions that help you answer them. If you're overly analytical you can come up with never ending reasons as to why any given option is the odd one out, but there is only ever one conventional and hinted at approach to giving the correct answer. You have to humour the question and take the most straight forward route.
      It's about what you can objectively prove, only using the given information and some very basic knowledge, something someone who could neither read nor write would know, e.g. knowing what an animal and the sky is. As throughout all of the IQ test, any method of thinking that leads to multiple interpretations is immediately to be declared null and void. Use a method of thinking that allows you to reach one proven answer and then if you get it wrong and the explanation doesn't make any sense, that's on them.
      To summarise, when doing these questions, which one is the odd one out should immediately scream to you. It's intuition, no thought at all, you should just know without being able to really explain why, other than what is most obvious. The complexity is in designing these questions, not solving them. The supposed ambiguity is largely intentional, but that doesn't stop you from being able to answer correctly, it's just a small test of your decision making abilities.

      @@flapajack3215 Hello Flapajack,
      I agree with you for the most part. Though my opinion is that an IQ test should have one and only one definitive logical answer.
      If not, it's rather a quest upon common sense than the Measurement of cognitive ability from my point of view. To some Extend, one could say that I have a disability in recognizing common human sense which might be the reason why I have trouble with such tasks. My strengths rely in pattern recognition and algorhytmic thinking.
      I fully agree with you that the "Find the odd" examples in the video have one element clearly prominent to be different, The ship, the eggplant, the lamp and the fish. In a real IQ test however, answers may not be so trivial.
      I give you an example of what I mean:
      twitter.com/edsouthall/status/1086310605080969216
      In the shown post, N showed up to me right away, since I started from the bottom left and recognized It is the only Element with two black circles, not containing a hollow square. Upon looking at the picture from a wider view, E can be Identified for having a different direction than the others.
      In even more abstract odd one out tests, I find similar problems:
      www.graduatewings.co.uk/userfiles/Image/logical%20tests/abstract_logical_test_odd_one_out_question_1.png
      A might be the odd one, for not all elements intersect, furthermore, it has 4 elements, while the others only have 3
      The correct answer however according to the webpage is to count the intersections. A, B, D all have 3 intersections. while box c has 4 intersections. thus D is the odd one out:
      "Note that box A has three intersections so box B and D have, however the box C has four intersections and thus you can conclude that box D is odd one out. Fairly simple, isn’t it."
      I dont know. To me that does not make sense. It might be either A or C (or another answer based on other perspectives) but D because C hase a different amount of intersections does not make any sense to me at all.

      I took my MENSA test in October, didn't get in. My wife says it only proves I don't test well. I think I would have passed if I had taken it 20 years ago. My biggest problem was time, the whole test was timed and speed doesn't dictate intelligence. I'm have dyslexia, MS, and was nervous as hell going in. If you go for MENSA, don't take it seriously. I took it very seriously, thought being a member would change my life in some way. I have a wife and four kids who tell me I'm a genius when I do things, and that's all the validation I need.

      An aubergine/egg plant is a fruit though. And I can't think of a good argument for it being the odd one out other than the other 3 being sweet.
      The other three have an obvious argument for being the odd one out... only one processed, only one with multiple fruits, only one with seeds outside.
      And yeah the light sources isn't a good question either. You can read by 3, so starlight is the odd one out. 3 are natural so the light bulb is the odd one out. The moon only reflects light so it is the odd one out. So maybe its the sun is the odd one out as you can argue for the other three...

    Being pedantic but due to the Flynn Effect Mensa is now 1 / 44 or the top 2.28 percentile.

      How accurate are online IQ tests, Andreas?

    • @sherlockholmeslives.1605
      @sherlockholmeslives.1605 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Andreas
      I have scored considerably higher on High Range IQ tests Andreas than my Mensa Results.
      My Mensa IQ score was just above the first standard deviation above the mean average but on some high range tests I score much more.
      I'd like to believe that Mensa is right but it would also be nice if I had got a considerably high IQ.

    Is that real ? Max score in test is 145 ?

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think what you're asking is what is the highest IQ score one can get... The answer is not exact because it depends on how many humans are on earth since it's based on the number of standard deviations from the mean. Only 0.5% of the human population will be above 140, so 145 is a realistic number for our purposes in this video. If you're more curious about this, there is a lot written about it online by statisticians.

    Like you, I also enjoy doing tests and puzzles like this just for fun. Some people excel at the general logic or algebraic questions, but struggle in other things like pattern recognition.
    The best I could manage on the ACT was a 29, but I did much better on the SAT, and on various IQ tests I usually score in the 135 to 145 range.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, That's so interesting! I've been tutoring SAT/ACT for many years, and I do find that most students have a preference. ACT tends to be more straightforward and black & white, while the SAT tends to favor abstract thinkers.
      Yes, we definitely all have our strengths and weaknesses, and it really depends on the type of IQ test and what skills it tests. Are you a part of Mensa?
      Also, I post new puzzles every week on the facebook group if you'd like to join us! facebook.com/groups/sharpcookie/

      Sharp Cookie I’m not currently a member of Mensa. I’m sort of on the fence as to whether or not I want to apply. I’ve heard mixed things from people who are.
      I’m still in graduate school, so I don’t think paying $79 a year to be in Mensa is practical until I land my first big paying job. But maybe once I get settled in my career, I’ll apply for the test.
      While some employers might be impressed with Mensa membership on a resume, others might think that would make me snooty and hard to work with, which I don’t think I am. Many Mensa members I interact with are brilliant, but have terrible social skills and are unpleasant to work for/with.
      If I were to get accepted into Mensa, I’d keep it to myself unless I were asked or if it naturally came up in conversation. I wouldn’t use that as a justification to act arrogantly, as I’ve seen some members behave.

      That's interesting! I thought most employers would see it as a positive, but I can definitely understand that there's going to be some negative stereotypes. I actually think it would help you as it relates to networking. I hear there's a lot of interesting Mensa events depending on your area. Might help you get a job that way! I would try it out for a year, and if it's not worth the $79 then drop it. 🤷‍♀️ What is your major?

      @michaelstein7510 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharp Cookie You’ve talked me into giving it a shot! I’ll apply for the test once this whole virus pandemic settles down.
      I’m currently working towards a M.S. degree in Geography at LSU, focusing on GIS technology and Urban & Regional Planning. I’m doing my thesis project on mapping the factors that affect dropout rate in Southeast Louisiana’s public high schools, and hopefully developing a model to help school boards limit the dropout rates as much as possible.
      I started as a History major and competed that degree, but by my senior year I realized that I didn’t want to pursue a graduate degree in history. The job market just isn’t very good for that, and I didn’t enjoy that type of research much. So I decided to do a double major program and also earn a B.A. degree in Geography, since I had already completed a lot of credits in the program.
      I graduated summa cum laude from LSU in December 2018 with a University Medal, a high school teaching certification, and the two B.A. degrees. I’m happy with my choice. I plan to work in civil service or in the private sector once I complete my Master’s program, and perhaps teach at a community college on the side, since I enjoy teaching, but don’t like the culture of university academia. I could have gotten into a PhD program, but since I don’t plan to pursue a tenure-track academic career, I feel it’s better to just get a Master’s degree for now and see where things stand once I get a job. I’d be happy to complete an MBA program, if it got me a higher salary in the future.

      @@michaelstein7510 Good for you!! I'm convinced that teaching is one of the most rewarding things anyone can do. It's very satisfying to share your knowledge with others. And when your students tell you that you've truly helped them, there's no greater reward! I agree about university academia. Depending on the school, there can be a lot of ego's clashing and not the best culture to work in. Keep me posted!

      Knowing something is different from being able to perform well on a test. We can know a subject well yet still perform poorly when tested on it for a variety of reasons. It always helps to get familiar with the testing format in order to get an accurate assessment. But I totally see your point :)
