In India a non political person can be a President directly, but for becoming prime minister or minister individual need to win an MP seat, not necessary to win seat first but at least within six months of your appointment as Prime Minister or any minister.
He dedicated his life to our country and through our country the world till his last breath and sadly he actually forgot to think about himself, he remained unmarried till his last breath sacrificed his own happiness and giving everything of his talent and energy for his homeland.

Dr Kalam mentioned Pramukh Swami Maharaj of BAPS as his biggest influence. He was a great follower of Swamiji.The Swamiji has inspired him so much so that he wrote a book about him. I am yet to read it. Hinduism has inspired since he was young. In his village his father a Imam, preist of a Hkndu temple, Father from a Church used to sit together and talk about the village. He understood Hinduism like no other Muslim or even Hindu. He followed Dharma,understood what is righteousness. He was a strict vegetarian and played regularly Carnatic instrument Veena (prohibited in Islam) He was intially inspired by Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar and then drawn to Pramukh Swami. He didn't leave Islam to practice Hinduism, that's exactly what I've thought, why do we have to leave our religion to appreciate other or rather follow and he did it. While being Muslim, he appreciated and practiced Hindu philosophy and traditions. He was Sanskrit scholar and read Bhagavadgita as well as Koran.
