Bunch Bikes The Original Electric Review - $4.3k

  • The Bunch Bikes The Original is a three-wheeled electric assist + throttle on demand box bike designed to transport up to four children! It includes two removable bench seats that double as storage cubbies, full-length steel fenders, a steel chain guard, reflective tires, and integrated front and rear lights for safety. Powerful braking performance from three 160mm hydraulic disc brakes combined with smaller diameter wheels. The two front brakes operate using the same lever (on the left) for smooth and even delivery... both brake levers offer adjustable reach and have parking brake switches to secure the bike. Puncture resistant tires minimize maintenance, as long as you keep them inflated above the minimum PSI to avoid pinch flats. Torque-sensing pedal assist responds much faster than cadence, but requires consistent ongoing pedal force. Throttle on demand makes starting and relaxing your legs possible, but the throttle power and speed are limited by 1-5 assist levels. Great display panel with big readouts and simple interactions, USB charging port built into the base of the button pad near the left grip for charging a phone, GPS, or bluetooth speaker. Costs $1k more than the non-electric version of the bike (but totally worth it imo). Only available in one frame size and color, but the glossy black is timeless, hides dirt, and Bunch Bikes adds a rust resistant coating inside the frame. Unique steering setup requires some reaching and leaning at times, limited turning radius, no bottle cage bosses or attachments on the box, very heavy build at 152lbs with limited 350lb cargo capacity (220lbs in the box).

    This is a really cool bike! Main thing holding me back would be the price. And for something so custom they have to be at higher price points - our RadWagon is a good compromise.

    I think the price represent the "one-off" nature of this purchase....this company, even if you are thrilled with it, won't sell you on another. Once the kids outgrow it, selling it seems to be the most logical step....hence the mentions of re-sale value...if you buy new at $4.3K and sell on down the line at $1.5 to 2K it makes a bit more sense

      I’m glad that clicked. I don’t have kids, but grew up riding in a yellow Burley trailer with my sister! Lots of fun... and my parents did sell it once we got too big. But, that wasn’t before I got to use it for fun hauling my Sister around the block for a year or two :)

    These resemble what pushcart vendors used when I was growing up as a kid in NYC (think hot dog cart). I see potential in these bikes for small rolling vendor operations. Use a "solar generator" like the Jackery 1000 for power needs, and you could probably spend the summer being everyone's favorite ice cream person.

    • @metamorphicorder
      @metamorphicorder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The solar gen is totally unnecessary and inadequate for this in almost all urban or suburban areas.
      What would you use it for in that setting. You wouldn't want an electric freezer for the ice creams, that is way to heavy for the benefit. You would want a probably custom made yeti or artic chest with dry ice. It woild need integral anchor points to be attached to the bike and some degree of compartmentalization so that you can organize the product into sections and have small doors to open for the product you want so as to have a smaller opening and let less heat in when you open it.
      A powered freezer is way too heavy for this.
      You extend range by having multiple batteries. As to any music or attraction lights you want to run those are gonna be more efficient by having them with on board batteries and carrying even a medium sized battery back up like the jackery you mentioned but smaller.
      You plan your routes and sites such that you can park near an open outlet and plug in while you vend in a place for a period of time.
      You would actually want a second regular yeti or artic cooler with dry ice in it to bulk store your product if you are moving a lot of product, that way you have a bulk storage of product that isnt being opened for each sale and you just keep the sales box filled with enough of each product to get through a few hours and then you refill when you depelet the sales box.
      You dont want to park an ice cream vendor thing in the sun if you can avoid it, one obvious reasons, even with the coolers, more heat is more heat and the battery doesnt like sitting in the sun all that much it will make it hot and that can damage it.
      If possible you want to be in the shade as much as possible particularly if you are sitting still.
      In the shade, the solar cells wont work well unless you have the room to stretch things out with cords and such to get them in the sun and charge the battery.
      And solar chargers just arent really that fast and high capacity for the weight, particularly if you can find a mains charging point for your bike, just having a spare battery or two is gonna work much better.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds incredible, Tom! What a life :D the solar idea is near too, could inspire kids and trickle charge the battery.

      Rule of thumb is late elementary... or until they are skilled enough on their own bikes, and confident on the streets in your area, that they prefer doing that.
      My kids are 6 and 3, I think we have another couple years of solid use, even as the older one is starting to sometimes ride her bike shorter distances.

It has reflective sidewall strips and the pressure rating is 35-70 PSI or 2.5 to 5.0 BAR and you can get these and other details back at the full writeup here for this and any ebike I cover :) electricbikereview.com/bunch-bikes/the-original/

    While the 20" and 24" wheels may be described as "sturdy", the fact remains that 26" and taller wheels are generally capable of handling a somewhat heavier load. Maybe 26" wheels could also be seen as sturdy in their own right.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t done direct comparisons with a weight test, it my understanding is that shorter spokes don’t bend or fail as easily. The relative thickness to length of a shorter spoke is higher than longer and I’ve been told that given the same hub, spoke gauge, rim, and tire size, smaller diameter wheels can handle heavier loads than larger. This is especially true with real world use rolling and turning.

    $4.3K USD for:
    a cargo bike that will forever be a cargo bike.
    all that extra weight in the front would likely suck for steering.
    Value would hold up? I wouldnt pay half that price for that bike new, never mind paying half that price or more for it used.
    if I need to tow around a couple kids, I would buy a trailer for the back of my bike, at leas then my bike will always be a bike whenever I need it to be, just unhook the trailer and off i go.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My parents had the yellow Burly trailer for my sister and I, what you say makes good sense... but if you want kids up front and the stability of a three-wheeler, this product is pretty neat. To make it cheaper, you could get the more basic Virtue Cycles Schoolbus+ electricbikereview.com/virtue-cycles/schoolbus-plus/ or get the non-electric Original from Bunch Bikes and add your own kit. Most of the box bikes I've covered are just expensive due to the custom frame and lower volume.

    • @metamorphicorder
      @metamorphicorder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this is kinda neat, but i tend to agree with the comment about this form factor. Im not particularly fond of the helicopter parenting insipred products. Cargo wise its not the worst, but heres my problems with the design.
      Parents are way to obsessed with having eyes on the kids all the time.
      I feel the same way about top tube mounted child seats.
      I think that when you are riding a bicycle, putting things between your eyes and the road in front of you is way less safe than having even your kids behind you. If you cant trust your kids to stay out of trouble enough to stash them behind you, then you simply dont get to haul them around on a bike. Thats the breaks. Having them in front of you really isnt going to help that much if they are determined to get into trouble they will. Additionally, you are now putting your kids right where most impacts happen, in front of the bike. This seems like a bad idea to me.
      I mean i guess that way you can actually watch them get smashed.
      If that was gonna happen to my kids, i would really rather not watch it happen.
      Seems like one of those parents will love this idea, kinda products that doesnt really stand up to critical analysis, at least for me.
      Sounds like it works for the owner.
      I also agree that since its a default form factor and can be easily converted, it seems less viable for me. I would like it better if it could switch to a regular bike also.

    • @acehighdan
      @acehighdan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metamorphicorder your right, I didn't even think of the safety aspect of it, not only is the front the most likely place for a severe impact, it also limits your ability to avoid an impact and increases the chance of getting hit. The perfect example of this is 1 block away from my residence, there is an alley in which you cannot see until you're practically crossing the alley because of bushes obscuring the view of the alley, with that kind of bike setup, by the time you can look left down that alley to see if there is a car coming, the kids would already be halfway across that alley.
