    This is a movie OF a concert. The last concert of The BAND. Recorded at Winterland in San Francisco, it was their farewell performance after 16 years on the road. Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, Levon helm, Rick Danko and Robbie Robertson and about two dozen of their closest friends in the music biz. It is worth you time to at least watch the full movie "The Last Waltz". There is also footage on TH-cam, Black and White, of the full show from the TV feed. "Who Do You Love" is a cover,of an old blues tune. When Ronnie Hawkins says "Big time Bill" he's talking to Promoter Bill Graham, who staged the event.

    "The Hawk" we loved hi up here in Toronto cause he made us feel the love o f rock & roll when we were just kids back in the early sixties. Use to go to a place called "The Hawk's Nest" and just have the time of our lives dancing and listening to these guys.

    There was a popular Canadian group called Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. Before they hooked up with Dylan the Band were the Hawks.

    The greatest rock and roll film. You definitely should watch the whole thing. Great stuff from one of the greatest bands and assorted musical legends ever assembled on a stage together.

    It's hard to over estimate the brilliance of The Band. You can understand why Eric Clapton wanted to join them. Love to see you react to King Harvest (Will Surely Come), one of their funkiest and my favorite.

    The Last Waltz is a movie (Directed by Martin Scorsese) of The Band’s farewell concert. It also contains some backstage footage and commentary. They started as Ronnie Hawkins’ backing band, so naturally, he was invited. Great footage with a lot of great musicians joining them.

    Levon Helm’s drums and vocals and Rick Danko’s harmonies and fretless bass playing and Richard Manuel’s piano playing on the weight are all awesome.

    They are so into the music, I never get tired of watching them or listening to them. Look at Rick as he watched The Hawk and Robbie, he is in heaven.

      It quickly becomes obvious who is in it for the music, who is in it to entertain people, and who is in it for the fame. 2 out of the 3 are so fun to see live.

    • @hannejeppesen1809
      @hannejeppesen1809 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hectorsmommy1717 I think your comment "who is in it for the fame" is suppose to mean Robbie. If that is your point I couldn't disagree more, I read Robbie's book "Testimony" as well as Barney Hoskyns' biography of The Band, music always came first with Robbie, he quit high school and sold his prized guitar to afford a train ticket to Arkansas to meet with Ronnie Hawkins, who offered him his first job in music. Later with The Band, when Richard, Rick and Levon were strung out on heroin and slept late in the morning, Robbie was up early writing songs. By the way Rick is my favorite singer in The Band, so not being judgemental, it was just facts. I would have loved to see The Band live and especially Rick and Robbie, both were so good looking back then, and had lots of charisma.

    • @hectorsmommy1717
      @hectorsmommy1717 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hannejeppesen1809 My comment was about musicians in general, not specific members of The Band. It is obvious that every member is in it for the music. Yes, egos got in the way at times but the music was still paramount.

    • @hannejeppesen1809
      @hannejeppesen1809 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hectorsmommy1717 I guess if you want to be a rock star you have to like being in the spotlight. So many on social media are critical of Robbie Robertson, feeling he wanted too much attention etc. Some of that might be true, but he was also very good looking and had so much charisma it is natural he would get a lot of attention,

    • @hectorsmommy1717
      @hectorsmommy1717 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hannejeppesen1809 Anyone who puts themselves out there to entertain others has to have an ego. They need to feel that what they have to say is important enough that others want to hear it. Some bands implode after a while because there are too many huge egos (Eagles, aka The Egos, and The Beatles for example). Other stay together because some of the members are willing to play to one big ego (Rolling Stones, U2, Queen). Levon Helm was always critical of "The Last Waltz" because he felt it had too much Robertson and not enough Helm.

    In an interview with Ronnie Hawkins, after what he said about Frank Sinatra and Robbie, he addded "and he did". I'm not surprised Robbie was so good looking when young, killer smile, charisma, and he was a rock star.

  • @hannejeppesen1809
    @hannejeppesen1809 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Robbie had it all when he was young, looks, charm, charisma, talent, intelligence and a smile that would light up the room, I'm sure he was never lacking for beautiful female company.

    The concert was on Thanksgiving, 1976 at Winterland in San Francisco. Before the concert, there was a full turkey Thanksgiving Dinner. Then they cleared the tables and several hired dancers waltzed around the floor, followed by the greatest concert I've ever attended.

    The Band first started off with Ronnie Hawkins, they were the Hawks. Then they left him and went and toured with Bob Dylan when he first went electric. They changed their name after that to The Band. Robbie was 15 when he first started with Ronnie Hawkins.

    Robbie wrote the song "The Shape I'm in" for Richard Manuel. Richard had a severe addiction problem. had a drinking problem from when he was a teenager, later on coke, heroin. They all did drugs, but Robbie and Garth stayed away from heroin. Rick and Levon was addicted to heroin as well. Levon kicked the habit, but according to Joe Forno Jr's book "Levon's Man" he was addicted to other stuff well into the nineties. Rick I think was addicted to heroin most of his life, his near fatal car accident in 1968 left him in pain for the rest of his life, and I think that had something to do with his addiction.

    No. Not dope, it’s dough (money)

    For the crime of having nowhere to go

    Richard Manuel needs more attention. His singing is incredible and he's a top songwriter. Their first (and best in my opinion) album Music From Big Pink Richard wrote half the songs and sang most of them and then drugs and other issues got in the way for him and he kinda faded into the background. He was something else and one of my all time favorite singers.

  • @hannejeppesen1809
    @hannejeppesen1809 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Robbie wrote the song "The Shape I'm in" for Richard due to Richard's addiction problems, alcohol, heroin and cocaine. He was so talented but his addictions got the better of him. They all did drugs, but Robbie and Garth stayed away from heroin. With Robbie the music always came first.

    Robbie had it all, almost. Great songwriter, great guitar player, good looking, lots of charm and charisma. His singing voice was not the best, but he had 3 singers in his band that each had great voices, so he didn't need to be a great singer.
