Review of the Mafell KSS 300 saw system

- This is a detailed review of the Mafell KSS 300 crosscut and track saw system. For flooring and cabinet installation, this is my favorite saw system because it is powerful, versatile, and lightweight.

Nice overview! I bought the same saw a few years ago except in the cordless/battery version. I bought it and used it to finish the inside of a cabin in 1 x 6 tongue in groove pine. I had done one wall before with a miter saw but based on the room sizes I had to use that outside. So I'd measure a piece in the sloped upstairs attic, then take the piece all the way downstairs and outside, cut it, and hope it fit right. The Mafell saw changed everything because I was able to cut all of the miters right up in the space I was working in. And I could also use the same tool with that included track or a true Mafell or Bosch track to rip the boards as well. (Although a real track saw works better for ripping beveled cuts in my opinion.)
Since then, the tool still comes in super handy. Any time that I'm going to be cutting miters somewhere away from the shop (even in the house or somewhere else on the same property) it is WAY more convenient to bring this little saw along than to try to move the miter saw or bring the work to the miter saw in the shop.
Finally, this little saw is a great tool for cutting any straight lines or plunge cuts around the home. Works like a track saw, but is so small and light that it's easier to use in small spaces or even for cutting something on a vertical surface especially if you can find a way to clamp a short track to the piece.
It's kind of a niche product, but once you have it you find that it is a great small tool to use in ways that you wouldn't have thought of before. And while it's a small tool, it certainly isn't a toy. It's more powerful than it would seem and it cuts very smooth cuts with little tear-out. It's not cheap, but I'd highly recommend it.

This saw nomber 1 saw for my using every day on site, I modified saw fitet 140 mm saw blade to cut 50mm deep to cut doors and 2x2, made parallel guard bigger with original cant cut 100 mm,for its weight most powerful saw ewer used.
Welcome back dear friend. We also look for your videos. And this video was a great one too. I would say; that IF you laid all things in that box on a table and show the inside of the box. 90+ would say, "There is NO way any one could get ALL those items into "that" box!"

That’s impressive, compact packaging on their part. I’m not familiar with this tool. That systainer box reminds me of what a magician might have, you just keep pulling items up of this compact box. Thank you for the review video Steve.

Great video, always wondered what the advantage of this model was. That one-handed angle sawing on short pieces seems really useful. I have the 'normal' Mafell MT55 track saw and it definitely won't do that.
Thanks Michael. If I used a track saw more often, I would probably upgrade my Festool TS55 to the Mafell track saw. It has some very nice features. Steve
@@extremewoodworker It's a very nice saw. I was actually considering changing it for the TSC 55 so I can use the track for my OF1010 router and use the batteries for my Festool drills. The Mafell is nice but it doesn't completely fit in with the rest of my system.

Love the custom cutting "platform"! I appreciate your videos, Steve. I always pick up useful tips. Unrelated question: do you recommend a particular ripping blade for your sliding table saw? I just bought one and I have only been cutting sheet goods so far. I need a ripping blade for some projects that are coming up.
Thank you Derek. I use 3 different rip blades on the slider. The Felder Silent Power (315mm diameter Z28), Leuco ProLine (300mm diameter Z28), and the Tenryu (350mm diameter Z32). The Felder & Leuco blades are what I use most and offer an equivalent quality cut IMO. Steve
I am looking at this saw in cordless to use it cutting dimensional lumber 2"x for framing inside a finish premises because it is small, lightweight and almost dust free without a dust extraction instead of my Milwaukee 7 1/4" miter saw or FLEX circular framing saw.
What is the Pros and Cons?
Would you recommend this saw?
Hi Ricky. I think most of the pros and cons for the KSS300 are specified in the video and it is my favorite saw for jobsite use. It is not my first choice for framing since it will not cut through 2x material on a 45 degree bevel. It will cut through 2x stock on a 90 degree cut. As long as you don't need to cut through 2x material on a bevel, it would fit the bill.
Downsides are price but that should be expected for any top tier saw. For the KSS300, blade selection is limited to Mafell but they ship fast (I get them in 2 business days). I keep an additional crosscut blade and one rip blade on hand.
As far as cordless goes it sounds like you are looking at the KSS 40 18M bl. Cordless tools are heavier and more costly than their corded counterparts. They also have higher long term costs due to replacement batteries which at some point may become unavailable (DAMHIK). One advantage to the Mafell cordless is the batteries are not sole source and the Metabo LiHD batteries work with the Mafell and are less expensive. This may make for better long term service but only time will tell.
I would suggest identifying all your functional requirements and then calling Jeff or David at Timberwolf tools to find what best fits your specific needs. They are no pressure and will answer your questions honestly. Steve

the jigsaw is outstanding. there are times because of the stiff blade, I will use it over a circular saw.
Is there something like this for cross cutting construction lumber?
Yes, Mafell makes a variety of these in different sizes suitable for construction lumber. I don't believe the flexible rail will work with those saws but there are rigid rails available that will do the job. Steve
You could put on some gloves instead of cutting yourself. I like mafell tools.
